In this video I talk about the 5 considerations when picking between Ram 1500 vs Toyota Tacoma. A little back story , I purchased a 2016 Ram 1500 and ultimately traded it in for a Tacoma.
0:48 Point 1 Size size/room
2:36 Point 2 Towing
3:59 Point 3 MPG
5:37 Point 4 Price point
7:33 Point 5 What are you using it for
Size: when you are looking for a truck this is something that I didn’t realize I would miss when I didn’t have the space. I always drove vehicles that didn’t have a ton of space, but when I bought my Ram 1500 it had great leg room and storage when traveling never feeling a need for space. The Tacoma being a smaller vehicle definitely has less space and might take some getting use to if you are coming from a larger vehicle but definitely has enough room for day to day or travel.
Towing: if you are considering towing the Tacoma is rated around 6800 lbs and the Ram is rated around 7500 lbs. This varies depending on trim level and both vehicle are capable but the Ram will allow you to more. I have desire to tow but I do not plan on towing anything over the Tacoma’s weight rating.
MPG: When buying my Ram 1500 gas milage (mpg) was a huge concern. I was driving almost 82 miles one way to work and the Ram gets better gas mileage which played into my decision to by the Ram in the first place. The RAM 1500 averaged 20 miles to the gallon with a lift ( calculated using fuelio). The Tacoma stock gets around 16 to 18 when I am trying to conserve the amount of gas I am using.
Price point: The RAM for me was initially a less expensive truck. I bought it used which I saved a lot of money doing that and with the depreciation value of the ram I would definitely go that route. The Tacoma although more expensive and you’re getting less truck it holds its resell value better and buying a used vehicle actually only ends up being a few thousand dollars cheaper so for me buying a Toyota Tacoma new made more financial sense. With all that being said I definitely lost money buying my ram in trading it in but it was a good learning experience and I’m glad that I had the opportunity to use it for about a year.
What are you going to use it for: I’ll start by saying both of these trucks are going to be a capable option as a daily driver with occasional offroad use. For me That’s exactly what I wanted in a truck. Now both of these trucks have 4 x 4 capability they both have locking rear differentials and they both offer a great ride as a daily driver, But for me the biggest thing was I wanted that wider range of off-road parts that the Toyota Tacoma offered. There is definitely a market for the ram and it is growing every day but when I initially went to lift the ram I had difficulty finding a lift that would work without having to do a complete full suspension.
With all this being said do you really will have to decide which truck is going to be best for you and this is just my personal opinion so take it for what it’s worth I’m just giving you my experience in thoughts on the process. I hope you guys enjoyed the video leave a comment down below if you would thanks.

  • Drove both of these trucks before buying. I spend 90% of my time on road and the Ram is the one you want. If your doing a lot of off-roading you might want the Tacoma. The 5.7L sounds awesome and has better horsepower.

    • Yeah both of these vehicles are awesome if you spend any length of time on the road the RAM definitely is nice to have for the room and the horsepower. Thanks for watching!

    • one becomes junkyard value and transmission problems later on, and one holds value and doesnt have that much power but is still capable of going over the road and take your ass home by the end of the day thanks to toyota engineering.

  • What about the Ram 3.7 L V6 verses the Tacoma.

  • These were the 2 trucks I weighed and considered the moat before I ended up buying a 16' Laramie 4x4 w/ Hemi. I have a gf and 2 dogs and we love to go on trips, and I'm able to pack well over a week worth of stuff without worrying about space. I had to reconcile the depreciating value by telling myself that I plan on keeping it till it dies and I'm a responsible owner (transmission mechanic). My BIL has a new TRD Pro and it is sweet! I'd own both if I could.

    • That is pretty much sums up how I feel. Either way you go they are both solid trucks despite what the brand loyalists say. I think if I had planned on keeping my truck for the long haul then I would have stuck with the RAM. Thanks for watching!

  • I myself had a 2019 Tacoma got it off the lot with 29,000 miles. Had a few rain storms and would try to ignore that the sensors would turn on and off randomly. Happened also on hot days I’m from Arizona but not to mention I did off road was super impressed but it almost over heated one day, after that sensors did what they want after 6 months of owning. Now i have a 4x4 2019 dodge hemi loveeee this truck space but know it won’t last as long as the Tacoma would’ve if it wasn’t having those small issues.

    • I believe there was a recall on the front sensor. I never had any issues other then snow build up causing it to turn off. Can’t go wrong with either truck. Thanks for watching.

  • Okay, so I am currently trying to decide if I want to get a long bed full size truck or a more compact 4 door mid size truck. I took both of them down to toyota hilux and Ram 1500 crewcab with the 8ft bed. Any of them I plan to get it lifted and add some Offroad gear. So, I think gas mileage is a bit better on the hilux with the 4 cil engine, but I believe it is not a huge difference against the 5.7L hemi while the power is actually very different. I tow a trailer about once a month, I load trucks about twice a month and I love to have a lot of gear on them. I also use them as a daily driver, so for me it comes to this: City mpg Highway mpg Half payload mpg 7000 lbs towing mpg Full payload mpg Maxed out towing mpg Known issues Mainteinance costs 4x4 system reliability Interior life expectancy Electronics life expectancy Both trucks are meant to be driven forever with good mainteinance, so overall life expectancy is not an issue here, but the costs and capabilityes are the ones that are killing me

    • From everything you broke down buying a Ram 1500 seems to be a better option. I’m not sure what year Ram you are looking at but my 2016 did better than my current Toyota Tacoma and would probably do better than a Toyota hilux.

      @TrentMMoore@TrentMMoore2 жыл бұрын
    • @@TrentMMoore I'm thinking about 2017 models for both. And both on gasoline engines. And yeah, in my mind the Ram seems a better option, but the repairs and maintenance costs are the ones stopping me from pulling the trigger. I will do a bit more research on it with a mechanic and I will put up a comment with the info when I have it. Maybe I will end up buying a very large truck pretty soon and hopefully it is the long bed version.

  • I assume you got the v6 Ram? thats what im looking now and deciding wether the 5.7L Hemi is even worth it based on what i use a truck for. which is basically off roading and transporting my motorcycles

    @jonathanmonroy9174@jonathanmonroy91744 жыл бұрын
    • I had the V8. I loved the 5.7 Hemi my only problem was the HEMI tick started around 50k miles. If you ever plan on doing “over landing” style camping and loading down your truck the extra power is worth it.

      @TrentMMoore@TrentMMoore4 жыл бұрын
    • If you're going to get a V6 Ram, just go for the Tacoma. Chrysler's Pentastar V6 is one of the least efficient V6 motors i've experienced. It's the same engine that's in the Wrangler. I got less than 300 miles on a tank with a full load when i had one. Not to mention its a damn hog, no balls at all under full load (several people and camping gear). the engine is just pure hot trash, always has been. always will be.

      @europeanlegend9347@europeanlegend93473 жыл бұрын
    • @@europeanlegend9347 the 3.6L pentastar is an undertake for the size of a ram 1500 and the capabilities the owner expects out of a full size truck. It is a very good engine, but it has its place elsewhere. For a vehicle that size a v8 or a forced intake v6 is the way to go. The pentastar is a great engine for jeeps, suv's and lower trims of charger and challenger where the only loose you will see is the acceleration

  • The brand that started first was Dodge. But the one that is steadily climbing up in this truck world is actually Toyota. Those Tacomas are very reliable trucks off the fly even though it's not as big or powerful as the Ram.

    • I love my Tacoma! I loved the room I had with my Ram, but I really only miss it when I fully load my truck.

    • So you drive a Tacoma also? Or let me guess you drive a Fiat because you are a Dodge fanboy? No car is perfect when you find one that everyone is happy with let me know. Thanks for watching .

      @TrentMMoore@TrentMMoore3 жыл бұрын
  • Hmm. Only reason I’m considering the ram 1500 is because the $15,000 rebates. Brings the MSRP to $37,000 and same price as the Tacoma. And the mpg isn’t that much different then the Tacoma with the 5.7L hemi. But you get a full size truck. Or another option is a ram 2500 with a Cummins for $47,000... excellent price for a diesel truck that’s well equipped.

    @cdub.91@cdub.914 жыл бұрын
    • I found the MPG to be better in the RAM then the Tacoma. I was doing more highway miles in the RAM so that might have played a part in it. I think you can’t go wrong either way. If you plan on selling it within 5 year of purchase the Tacoma will definitely hold its value better. I would take the time and shop around I was able to save around $6k by taking each quote and sending them back and forth until I got the lowest price. Thanks for watching
