So I might be a very non intelligent person and somehow didn't mention (I don't think) backwards compatibility. The original PS3, the 60gb version, is backwards compatible with PS2 games, but the PS3 slim is not. They do both play PS1 games though. I'll go sit in the corner now...

PS3 from 2009-2013 is one of the greatest eras in gaming history, no question.
100% agree. So many great games and back when you didn't have to pay in order to play multiplayer. And splitscreen was still alive.
There's great games that came out before that, like Folklore which came out in 2007.
1999-2014 is the best era…was mid before and after.

I can play test drive: eve of destruction on my first gen ps3, unlike the ps5. Really i use my ps3 as an upscaled ps2, and i wouldnt have to worry about memory card corruptions 😂
It actually kind of is. When I first saw videos about the PS3 about in around summer 2021 I was like "isn't that thing like too outdated" until I actually played on it again at my grandads house, that was my uncles system I had alot of fun with it playing black ops 2 & cod ghosts. I was also playing midnight club LA and I was Hella invested into it more then I've been into any game in a long time. I played LA Noire on my cousins ps3 super slim a while back in December 2021 and it was fun. Not a thing felt outdated about it at all for me. I played ps3 before that too with my little cousins in 2013,14,15,16,&17 over there house. Games like Minecraft, lbp3, and I remember watching my little cousin play God of war once
Dude the military used PS3s back in the day as super computers due to the processing power they had so yea I'd say they are cutting edge.
The graphics and aesthetics of the PS3 generation still looks so good! I actually prefer it over later generations. It may not have 60fps 4k, but what it does have, is games that are worth playing more than once unlike the bloated empty games we get today.

I sold my original ps3 because I was a poor student, yesterday I bought a ps3 slim for 50bugs again, because ps3 is the greatest console ever. But I'm a bit said I didn't have the sexy original fat model, but I was too afraid of buying a 18 jear old consol.
I’ve been noticing a lot of people going back to ps3 and they all say the same thing “I’ve not had this much fun in years” It’s a strange phenomenon but I’m glad to be apart of it!
Modern gaming has had the soul sucked out of it , PS3 and backwards the games are a lot more fun to play, modern gaming is too focused on trying to milk us all and online play Wich a lot of time isn't as fun as single player or split screen due to the toxic and cheating nature of people , cod is a great example , it's just people sitting in corners sniping , takes the fun out of what should be a great game .
PS3 and 7th gen in general really was that sweet spot where we got great single player games, great games with multiplayer online, and great games with local multiplayer. I wish the gaming industry stuck to this way of doing things. Gaming was great during this time. With 8th gen, online multiplayer has killed off local multiplayer, games just aren't fun to play, and there's little to no passion in creating modern games besides in the indie scene.

Never upgraded to ps4/5. Didn't see the need too. With all the great games for low prices on PS3. Good to see two of my favorite games made your list. Resistance Fall of Man and Killzone.
Same here, never bought another console after my 60gb PS3 died in 2014. Tempted to buy a used PS3 slim and some games including resistance.
PS4 was a let down. I have one and only ever liked fallout 4 goty and red dead 2. The library sucked it was mainly remasters from this gen haha

Grabbed a sealed copy of akibas trip, anarchy reigns, and metal gear solid legacy collection today at a local convention. Been adding to my original ps3 collection and im up to 75 games currently.

PS3 is an awesome system. The original models can last longer if you don't let it overheat. Keep it in an open area. Also, you can stick a couple mini fans in the back blowing cool air into it. That helps as well.

One thing you didn't mention is that the specific fat model of the PS3 you own is backwards compatible with PS2. This is exclusive to the fat model with 4 USB ports on the front, later models came with only 2 ports and were no longer backwards compatible.

Bro, changing the thermal paste is an absolute must if you want that bad boy to last, as well as a thorough but gentle cleaning. You could pay to have it done, otherwise parking it up is wise. However, that won't halt the degradation of the thermal paste. Love the videos, keep 'em comin'.

Im glad you mentioned the slim. It is the most reliable model and the most recent one they produced it was in production until like 2017. So lots in circulation. I would only get an OG model for Back compat or Nostalga sakes.

I still have my 80 gig ps3 from 2008. I’m paranoid to use it though after she’s been ylod twice but I try to turn it on at least once a year just to be safe it still works lol. Mostly a display piece now, such a good looking system.

The PS3 Slim is my fav I bought one last year I’ve collecting rare games like Lollipop Chainsaw, Alice Madness Returns, Metal Gear Rising, Puppeteer. So much fun with this system
I own the 500GB superslim model of the PS3 and aside from the console overheating and almost exploding on rare occasions, I had no problems with the coneole since that day. I still play games on it & I'm having fun.

For those looking to buy a PS3, you should check on hacking options for each model. Older models can have custom firmware and can play more retro games. PS3 Slim uses PS3HEN and can play backups of PS3 games but is limited when it comes to other retro options. I’m very happy with it as I play retro games on my Odin and Vita. Happy gaming!
I bought a PS3 recently along with 20 games. A handful of them were games I played as a kid & the rest were either Top Selling PS3 games or games in a series I played

Just a tip to anyone getting a ps3. Watch tutorials on how to take it apart, change the thermal paste and thermal pads ! Recently done it with my ps3 slim 2004b model. I spread gd900 thermal over cpu and gpu and then i put in new 2mm thermal pads to replace old ones. Runs way way way better!.
I have the PS3 super slim. Got it as a Christmas present in 2013. It came as a bundle with FIFA 14 and Uncharted. I don't recall how much storage it has but I know it's a lot!
Changing the thermal paste doesn't change it from being stock still. Thermal paste goes bad. It gets old and brittle. Basically, each time you turn it on for the day the thermal paste is dry inside and has to warm up to actually start working again which means the chips get hotter than normal during that period and then the paste when fully warmed up still isn't as conducive to cooling as it once was. You should definitely consider changing the thermal paste like changing the oil in your car. At some point it needs to be done for the longevity of your system.
Super slim is underrated. I've had disc eject issues with my original ps3 and a slim I bought later. I bought the Super Slim and haven't looked back

I have a slim 2501b. It accepted cfw 9.01! You should mod it so you can turn your fan speed up. Super easy follow Blaine, locker or Mr. Mario. Modded warfare. Super simple bro. You can back up your games to the hard drive too. SSD1 terabyte. You can also use up to a 2 TB.External hard drive to back games up. You can always go back to normal operating system at any time. It's not permanent. I back up my games to the hard drive.I don't pirate them...

All you have to do is make sure it has fresh thermal paste, upgrade the to the 19 blade fan, and make sure you have the APS-226 power adapter inside which draws less power and runs cooler, and clean it real good inside
You’ll have to pick up vanquish if you haven’t already tried it. Dirt showdown is a great racer along with burnout paradise. A few other notable pick ups are killer is dead, fist of the North Star, and ace combat horizon

Urs is loud because it MAY be reaching its end UNLESS u get it cleaned internally and the thermal pads and paste replaced. My cecha01 60 that ive had since 07 is as quiet as my ps4 pro, maybe quieter. It was loud as you said, and after I replaced the pads and paste its like new. Love ur ps3 people!

Was always an Xbox person still have my 360 n series x but gotten the ps5 n 3 to play the exclusives I missed out. Love both Sony n Microsoft each console has their ups and downs. Really enjoying the killzone series atm.

my old ps3 slim overheated so i bought a new one with new thermal paste and delided. ended up buying time crisis gun and ps move gun. also had to get 2 refurbished ps3 controllers. the price went down alot recently. used to be around $60 got 2 for $40. been playing army of 2 and resistence 3.

I was lucky, I found my old save on my PS3 where I had all the DLC bought, All License Tests, Special conditions completed, Chromeline Cars, Stealth Cars, Academy Cars, The Kart 125SPL and Toyota FT-86 II, Gamestop Camry, Edge Camaro and the Chromeline XJ13, the rare Yellow Ford GT LM Spec II and the PSP import cars in the unique PSP exlusive colours dunno how I got the Gamestop Camry and Edge Camaro as they are US exclusives some kind of glitch or overwrite. All my DLC is real too, not some type of hybrid save hack thing that I heard about... I totally forgot all about my save after all these years, it was amazing to come across again... so much nostalgia... so glad I created it and had it stored all these years also got Gran Turismo 6 and all the DLC for it and also Mercenraries 2. god the good old days.

bro you got to change that paste and clean out the dust, the paste is probably so dry and making your ps3 run at 70 Celsius or higher, that's why your fan is going crazy. I changed my paste, and it was life changing.
Picked my ps3 phat up by trading an xbox 360 and some games for it. person didnt know what they had but wanted an xbox 360 for their kid. they got a ton of games to. upgraded the hardrive first thing and had a buddy clean it good
I still have my PS3 slim I bought back in the day, a 320GB model. I recently upgraded it to a SSD and replaced the thermal paste and it's just amazing. MGS4 has amazing graphics, I dare to say they even look better than the PS5. Also FYI, the PS3 was the last console to be able to support RGB, Component, and S video...S VIDEO!!! HDMI was just a plus at that time. You can still surf the web and download themes for it too.
Ps3 to me is probably better than xbox 360 the simple fact that you can play other region ps3 disc games on it makes it that much better!
The Best games are also the most common games, that is why they are so cheap as you can find them everywhere and uncharted or the last of us have been remastered both on ps4 and ps5 so it keeps the prices low but it does not diminish how good they are.
I bought a fat PS3 last Sunday on the 4th a 80GB model, already swapped in my 500/8GB SSHD and CFW and installed the 60FPS Mario 64 port I buying another one next week and will keep it legit/HEN and a third one for OtherOS/Linux

My PS3 slim that I've had since 2009 just died on me recently. PLEASE change the thermal paste 😭 it's not hard to do I promise. Saying you want to keep the parts original is like saying you want to keep your cars oil the same.
The PS3 is such a great system but the only games i have for mine are its exclusives, thankfully it has some amazing exclusives. Everything else i have (multi platform titles) i have for my Xbox 360.
I still have my original mgs ps3. Would like to get the thermolpaste redone but scared to have done especially since no issues with the console.
Red ring of death had me suffer extreme anxiety. The lack backwards compatibility after sucks. I adore the games but the console was the worst of how restrictive it was and low performance. I still wish for a future backwards compatible PlayStation like 5 but for the moment many games from them are either remastered or have very low pc specs for a generic modern pc.
Love my slim model. I have a 1TB ssd in mine. Does it make it faster? Slightly. But it is quieter and uses less power and is probably more reliable. Relatively easy upgrade.

Try motorstorm apocalypse it'll blow your mind and if you want better frame rates go into your display settings and force the PS3 into 720p most of the games will have much better frame rates
One note about the controller: if you don't want to play with a PS3 controller you can use a PS4 controller with the PS3 (connected by cable). Wireless use you need the firmware update 4.60. I use this possibility for years because I can't play with the clunky PS3 controller anymore...😅
I think at this point it might be worth more investing into a good pc than collecting retro stuff. Ps3 emulation is getting really good and ps1 and 2 emulation is pretty much flawless even on a cheap as hell pc
