Healthy ageing starts with the legs

The clip is from my recent talk in Muscat, Oman for Marathi Mandal, urging people to help their ageing parents get more active. This is where they need most help because the wheel chair at the airport is not going to solve the problem of ageing. And active ageing is a priceless gift.
As we age, we lose muscle mass. We don’t have to get very old, the process starts as early as 30, as we begin losing 3-8% every 10 years. But the rate of decline gets even faster post 60.
Almost all the problems related to age - loss of confidence, memory, bladder control and even blood pressure, blood sugar regulation, poor recovery, etc., can be attributed to this phenomenon.
The good news though is that you can both arrest and reverse this to a large extent with strength training. The older you get, the more critical it gets to exercise. Start with atelast once a week of strength training exercises and keep up with your walks, yoga.

  • My mother is 67 years old and Nigerian, she goes to spinning classes every single Monday morning and she goes for jogging. Sometimes she even jumps down some stairs. She has no knee or leg problems. We even go hiking together in the mountains. Some people tell me they can’t even get their parents to do the same. I’m proud of her

  • I'm an exercise scientist and this is SPOT ON! I'm 57 and have been weight training since I was 14. Lower body strength is CRUCIAL! I would like to add that gluteal strength goes hand in hand with leg strength, and is so important in supporting the back.

  • Exactly Rujutaji. . Even I always see this diffrence n feel bad that indian parents r comfortable sitting in wheel chair. . And also when on airport seeing me in white hair holding my luggage n running towards gates people come n offer wheel chair. I smile n refuse. Staying fit was n still is my goal...not just being lean means fitness. . So many people open their eyes open when they see me touching my whole palm to the ground. I learn . .keep my mind open from where ever I can to maintain my fitness at 67... Let God keep me this way till my last .....❤

  • When I was younger 20s to 40s I did power lifting and martial arts. This paid off later in my life in my 60s to 71. I learned a long time ago that your feet and legs are critical in standing, walking, running, hiking, and biking. And if you do not use these muscles they will atrophy and you will end up with knee, leg, and back pain, especially, if you had been athletic earlier in your life. I recently had severe right knee pain. After trying various knee exercises I got on my exercise bike for a couple of minutes. The immediate effect was most of the knee pain was gone and the next day even better. The biking also helped with cardiovascular; therefore, stamina. With any exercise start out slow then gradually increase your time doing it.

  • Being a Malaysian and Chinese community are the 2 largest population in the country. The Chinese give very very importance to physical and mental health. They are the one busy doing yoga, meditation and breathing exercises along with the physical activities. We Indians are busy complaining about everything and do nothing. That is why the Chinese community are Fit even though they age. They are very very consistent with their exercises, healthy eating habits and hard work. We Indians must learn this from them . They learn all the good and best stuffs from the other community members and make it as theirs. We Indians learn all the rotten ones from others and destroy ourselves.

This Yoga is benefitting me for my Mental health and wellness so why not Do it!!!! But Indians hmm no no only Religion is the most important thing Yoga originated from The Hindu Teachings so don't Practice it as It's Hinduism. But for Chinese it's all about Profit. That is why they Are united as one Race not Divided like the Indians. A lesson that Indians must learn from the Chinese community.

I have started using the leg machines at my gym to start exercising the different muscles in my legs. I like the exercise shown in this video so I will start doing it as well. Thank you for the great video!

  • I’m 63 and vegan for 8 years. I was a caregiver for my elderly parents and my grandmother for 17 years. I watched what the Standard American Diet full of animal products did to them. None were overweight. But all suffered from high blood pressure due to clogged arteries (arteriosclerosis). They also suffered with age-related arthritis and osteoporosis. I think that as we age, clogged arteries and poor circulation are major causes of weakness in the extremities. My mother needed knee replacements (but never got them). My grandmother kept falling from TIAs. My father had a leg bypass in his 60s. All of them passed from a form of heart disease (strokes, congestive heart failure). To date, I take no medications. I am able to climb stairs and ladders. I walk my dogs. I garden, etc. I believe changing my diet has helped me to be healthier and stronger than my relatives when they were my age.

  • This is so true at multiple levels. Due to excessive use of technology and fashion statement providing products and stuff, we ignore our legs and their health so much along with ignoring our roots & foundations (like legs) that we have started thinking that we can float around in air without legs & strong foundation. I can see the example daily when I wear bearfoot style shoes (VFF) for healthreasons, people who are wearing fashionable heels complain about lack of cushioning and uglyness of VFF, while forgetting that they are wearing cushionless heels damaging their knees.

Please look up the info if you don’t believe me. I learned this all in science class in college recently. Also what I learned in that class was Cordaceps (another mushroom in capsules), shrinks tumors, cancers, cysts…I had a tumor size of a egg and after taking Cordaceps daily, it shrunk my tumor down to almost nothing.

A year later, I was trying to walk back to my apartment, and my back gave out, and I fell backward, hitting my head on the concrete. I wound up having vertigo and aggravating my injuries. One of my neighbour lady sits whole day n watch TV Saas Bahu serials n hardly walk. She got hip replacement surgery n her knees are weak from lack of mobility and movements for past 9 years. Aged only 50+. Now she is walking daily atleast 1 km to keep herself fit in a painful way n shift weight left to right slowly. My mom is 75 n still fit even walking briskly. I see every women 50+ above during morning or evening walks are weak walking like a duck probably due to lack of movements n knees need mobility of joints otherwise think it will rust. God gave us legs to move n not for laziness purpose.

All non hindi people should do this more on public and national stage so that our native languages across India are promoted and those living in small towns and rural parts don't feel alienated in their own home states and regions. Ever since 1947 all the media and functions have been made to use only english and hindi as if our own true identity and languages don't matter.
