The Super Show was the first Mario cartoon which focused on mostly original characters and places, with Bowser as the enemy every time. Super Show was super referential. The Super Mario Bros 3 Cartoon focused on Mario, Luigi, and the Koopalings, but still had unique plots and areas, but wasn't afraid to focus on the real human world, like the episode were Kootie Pie (Wendy) wants the whole of the United States as a birthday present. The Super Mario World cartoon focused on Mario, Luigi and Yoshi, and also the Koopalings, focusing more on character relationships, especially with the Dinosaur World having its local residents being cavemen. Mama Luigi cuts out all of the Cavemen (the worst part of the World cartoon imo), and focuses on Luigi finding Yoshi as a baby while trying to save Princess Toadstool from King Koopa.
