    • Basically since the days of slavery, there has been a societal rule known as the "one-drop" rule, which says that if you have "one-drop" of black blood in you, that makes you black. This rule is utter and complete rubbish though because there were then and still are now people who have black ancestry who look white. It seems that race is just based on how a person looks, which is the very definition of superficial.

    • The one-drop rule is a legal principle of racial classification that was prominent in the 20th-century United States. It asserted that any person with even one ancestor of black ancestry ("one drop" of "black blood") is considered black (Negro or colored in historical terms). HOWEVER, people in many other countries have tended to treat race less rigidly, both in their self-identification and how they regard others. Just as a person with physically recognizable African ancestry can claim to be black in the United States, someone with recognizable Caucasian ancestry may be considered white in Brazil, even if mixed race. According to Jose Neinstein, a native white Brazilian and executive director of the Brazilian-American Cultural Institute in Washington, in the United States, "If you are not quite white, then you are black." However, in Brazil, "If you are not quite black, then you are white." Neinstein recalls talking with a man of Poitier's complexion when in Brazil: "We were discussing ethnicity, and I asked him, 'What do you think about this from your perspective as a black man?' He turned his head to me and said, 'I'm not black,' ... It simply paralyzed me. I couldn't ask another question."

  • Obviously still a great video, but as a history major I'd like to add that I love how they made it seem almost like a court proceeding, drawing parallels to the US's historic past of trying to legally define race to maintain the ability to enslave or discriminate against black people. Also, DNA tests that tell you what country you're from are based on what specific genes they notice in your DNA that often belong to specific groups, and the percentages they give aren't based on your actual heritage. That's how both my mom and my aunt got different results and percentages on ancestry despite the website still confirming that they were sisters from the same mother and father.

    @failedartguy@failedartguy2 жыл бұрын
    • That makes sense. While your mum and aunt have the same set of parents, they'll have got their own grab-bag of genetics. We may get mathematical about heritage, but genes don't work mathematically.

    • Ganda Gandara Filipinos don’t count. Your ancestry is Austro-Polynesian and/or Caucasian. Philippians are more likely to look black or white than Asian. Well, they used to. Due to excessive migration in the past centuries, that might have changed drastically. I mean there are white people everywhere in the past half millennia. And the Chinese are migrating like flies. As for Philippine asians, they are relatively new. You guys aren’t even Asian. Only called as such cuz of the regional naming. And also people being uneducated. And yes, the English word for Filipino (citizens of Felipe or Philip anglicized) is Philippian. Yes, similar to that city state in Greece which is named Filippo which is Philip anglicized. Remember, the South East of Asia was once named East Indies. You could’ve been called Indians. So why do you call yourselves Asians, I would never know. I always say islanders but I would be corrected by ignorant people who have no idea what they’re talking about. Even would say that they aren’t American nor Spanish. Which is especially weird considering it hasn’t even been 100 years since Americans left and for the longest time, was a Spanish colony. The other nations surrounding that country know their culture now and integrated English or French or Dutch. Not the Philippines though. Weird. Terminology aside and back to biology, there’s a reason why some quarter look more or less the other and it’s due to genetic skipping. Some dominant genes go dormant and the recessive ones become the more dominant and that generation will have more dominant recessive genes than the dominant ones. But when they have a kid, their offsprings won’t look like the parents but their grandparents (dominant genes are more dominant again).
