- I personally hate that translation. It loses so much impact. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. In this translation it shows not only is the Lord with you but ALSO your rod and staff. The staff represents compassion as it's is the primary tool for herding sheep. The rod represents authority, power, and discipline to defend the sheep.
