Sepsis Signs and Symptoms (and CRITICAL THINKING)
In this video we're walking through the signs and symptoms of sepsis and the critical thinking behind it. So you won't need to memorize a list of symptoms of sepsis for your nursing school exam, but you'll actually understand the critical thinking behind it.
What is sepsis?
Sepsis is an infection in your body that leads to the body amounting an immune response, and it can eventually causes organ dysfunction.
This immune response causes 3 things to occur: capillary leak, vasodilation, and blood clotting. And all 3 of those things lead to a lack of blood flow to the organs, which causes the organs to be quite unhappy and not function properly. So during sepsis, your organs are not getting the blood flow they need so they stop working properly.
Signs and Symptoms of Sepsis:
Increased heart rate: When the organs don't get enough blood flow, the heart wants to balance it out and help them get more blood. So the heart is going to pump faster.
Increased respiratory rate: Blood carries oxygen. And when the organs don't get blood, they don't get oxygen. The lungs try to balance that by increasing the respiratory rate and getting more oxygen.
Decreased Blood pressure: During sepsis, there is capillary leak and vasodilation. So fluid is going to move from the blood into the surrounding tissues. This will decrease blood pressure. There is also vasodilation, which causes the blood pressure to drop.
Fever: As the body is working harder to fight the pathogen, it's going to cause the body temperature to rise.
Chills: As the body temperature rises, you actually feel cooler because the body hasn't quite caught up to the higher temperature, which causes those chills and shivering.
Mental Status Changes and Decreased Urine Output: The brain and kidneys are not getting the blood flow they need to function, so they stop working like they should.

This popped up in my feed. I am not a nurse, but suffered sepsis secondary to acute pancreatitis 5 years ago. Turned into septic shock, blood flow stopped to bowels which lead to ischaemic bowels and most of large and small colon removed. Now I have an ileostomy and short bowel syndrome. My kidneys stopped working, I was in itu (uk) for 3 weeks. 2 of those on dialysis. Kidneys now damaged but working. Every healthcare person should know the signs and be able to diagnose sepsis in the first place. Had my doctors worked out what was wrong before I was critically ill - It might not have developed into septic shock. Great instructual video

That all really sucks big time - and I can totally relate because I'm having the Life From Hell - I've had pancreatitis a number of times (6), and 3 dozen surgeries because my mother took DES while I was in utero. I had sepsis from a UTI in 2017 - it all went completely undiagnosed and I was thrown onto a Psych Ward because of the delirium. I almost died (for the 10th time.) I could go on and on. I'm writing a book. I hope you're feeling much better now.

Thank you so much for this video. I was so worried I have sepsis because I've had sudden fever, body pain and headache for 2 days. I was anxious because a little of my symptoms matched with sepsis. I think it's just a flu, and mentally I feel just fine! It gets better as well. Finally someone explained what sepsis is thoroughly. Thanks you so much for this super video! The great advantage of hypochondria is that you can be *absolutely_certain* that there is nothing wrong withyou, but not only *must* you die it *must be *Of_something* and what really does not matter and given that death is not experiencing anything, you can be certain that you will*never* experience not experiencing anything, although of course you must and will die but cannot know anything about it any more than you can know you are asleep nor can experience the moment you go to sleep. No matter how horrid it may be or get, it cannot go on forever.Every stick has two ends and no matter how bad one end maybe the other can only be better. As you know worry or fear never made fcuk all difference to anything, so they are what we call unnecessary suffering because the are not *Now_related* and can thus only be dreaming, but men(human beings/dreaming machines are so weird that they will sacrifice anything and everything*But* their unnecessary suffering which they clutch to their bosom as a mother clutches her babe to her breast and some would be lost *without* their unnecessary suffering, for which the prescription is lots and lots of*Now* as one chap put it take no thought for the morrow, sufficient unto the*Now* are the evils thereof. worry and fear are forward looking and thus dreaming, but there are those that are outraged if you suggest to them that they let go of their precious worry and fear and simply chuck them away or sacrifice them; for some weird reason they will clutch them to their bosom as a mother clutches her babe to her breast and they would be lost without them. Worry and fear ward off *absolutely nothing*

Ooooooh my gosh watching sepsis symptoms in real time makes this video much much more valuable to me. My advice for aspiring nurses is to get your CNA license and pay attention to the signs and symptoms of the patients in your care. I learned so much about what to look for by practicing it at work and this video put everything into perspective for me. So sad the things you have to see, but it pushes you to learn how to take of your patients better.

My mom was recently in the hospital for a uti and bladder infection, and the status report said probable sepsis. They pumped her full of a new type of antibiotic IV and she's been on antibiotics since release. She isn't showing any of these signs, thankfully.

How can I combat sepsis without going to the hospital? Where i live, if you are not insured there is a good chance a sepsis case will be an easy kill scenario and i believe doctors are financially rewarded for this. I've had symptoms about 5 weeks, not in as much pain as discomfort. I slouch when I walk feeling like I have no power in my core. I smoke. I pee plenty and it's a light green or brown, I'm color mixed up so I can't say for sure buy I'm think clearish brown. I started taking a liquid liver cleanse and a kidney pill, then drinking a lot of water. I started doing a fast to regenerate my organs. I was aiming for 30 days but I stopped after 3 days, I had the electrolytes ready and all but I read that if my kidneys are in a certain place, that fasting can mean death. I know I at least need to get blood work done. I just don't trust anyone nowadays
I had an abscess tooth that was delayed being removed, day later had to have antibiotics, IV been having bad sweats, and chills, I had bloods taken after another lot of antibiotics, my Dr called to say my liver function was off, so more bloods last week, am roasting 1 min, frozen nxt, confused, up to pee all night when never normally get up, my temp is 38, can't wait for drs to call me,

During her examination this morning, she was sleepy, vital signs Within the scope of the norm, breathing on her own, with no unusual findings on physical examination. Suddenly the monitor beeps due to a drop in storage. The patient is tachypneic and tachycardiac. What is the first step to be taken? 1) Connecting the patient to oxygen goggles 2) Intubation 3) Observing the oral cavity and suctioning secretions when necessary 4) Gas test to diagnose the source of distortion

Does this mean that anything slightly unfamiliar should be treated as possible sepsis? I’ve had something on my legs since August. I know it’s from my environment.. had alot of odd skin issues since I moved to these places, never seen anything like it before.. during the pandemic to now, I’ve been living in not so good conditions so I figure there’s no point seeing a doctor if I can’t change the cause/environment.

Two points: 1. This sounds more like a general description of shock. 2. The fever during sepsis can also be due to pyrogens. This is a good surface level, but far from complete.

@pritidaftary3030, with the fluid shifts and production of RBC decreases, hemoglobin can decrease as well.
Does the infection have to get into the blood stream to make the patient go septic? Or can a patient get sepsis with any infection if the body overreacts?
iMaGiNaTiOnWpAsSiOn, great question! Yes, sepsis is how the body is reacting to the infection, so the infection doesn't necessarily have to go into the bloodstream to cause a septic reaction.

Hi love my daughter Noel had this sepsis , they kept saying HLH . But she didn’t have that they found out sepsis . No fever blue lips vomiting pH 6.0 and lactate 10! Very bad numbers , happened very fast! Her eyes was always very puffy I felt maybe she had a issue and I wasn’t aware , I feel like this was my fault she was only one years old Noel was her name could I prevented this?

Is blood infection or sepsis detect by simply blood testing or cbc ?
Hey Lovely Lindo, sepsis would be identified through symptoms (vital sign changes, perfusion changes, ect) and looking at lab values that indicate an infection. I hope that helps clarify it for you, have a great day! 😊
Its identified by blood cultures not complete blood count the person who made this video should know that a complete blood count can only show high white blood count values which might indicate a infection but might not thats why they use blood cultures my wife just died of this sepsis

@@NursingSOS Right, that's how I knew it to be, but in this video she says Sepsis is an infection, so now it had me confused, does Australia have conflicting information to other countries sepsis, I remember for a while there people use to say sepsis is blood poising too, we know that is not true but people still say it, I think words are very important, so it kinda perplexed me when she said Sepsis is an infection, thanks for re confirming what I thought it to be too.
