  • Independent consumer reviews like this are so unbelievably important, it cannot be understated how much these are appreciated. Not only does it provide clarity for the consumer, but the boost in reputation from preforming well on this channel no doubt challenges the manufacturer to strive to provide the highest quality product. Not only do you show us how to use our money best, it tells the companies that we want to spend out money wisely, and producing a HIGHER quality product becomes the standard.

    • 3M certainly has a well-deserved reputation for high quality; overall results: 13:27 I'm really impressed that 3M Cubitron was the only brand which was hardly degraded at all by sanding on metal for 2 minutes: 13:16 True fact: I have a lot of 8" diskettes, with data on them, which I would love to recover. But the _ONLY_ brand which is still usable, 1/3 century later, is 3M. The other brands all self-destruct in the diskette drive, because the adhesive which sticks the oxide recording layer to the substrate has degraded, and the oxide comes off when the head rubs it. (Unfortunately, the data I want is on the other brand diskettes, mostly BASF and Wabash -- if anyone knows a way to read those diskettes, please contact me.)

    • @@ProjectFarm I will ask a bit of a counter-question. So if you are looking at maximum removal, this test is perfect. The good performance of removing materials from some of the brands might also suggest that the grain size could be larger or rougher than on the lower performing brands, i.e. different production standards/quality. So if one brands 120-grit is actually a 125 grit, it of course should outperform another brand which have their 115-grit labelled as 120 grit. It would be interesting to see the performance between papers from different batches, to see if the quality is consistent between different manufacturing runs. Other times you might be looking for the best finish including (or the lack of) circular scratches, lesser risk of burning the materials, degrading between center and outer edges (leading back to finish quality) and etcetera. This might be a bit extreme lengths, but I think that this test could be worth revisiting with different criteria to test. All cheers for an awesome channel!

Their name is on everything these days and they are one of the largest companies in the world because of sandpaper. "Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing", 3M. The "sand" on sand paper is a mining by-product.

    • Yes and its a fairly safe guess what products they'll be stocking when Project Farm's test results are in. In this case Project Farm's testing is clearly having an effect on retailers' purchasing decisions. Otherwise they are being made purely on marketing hype and the "perceived" company reputation which time and time again Project Farm demonstrates are not reliable guides when trying to find the best products out there or alternatively price/performance.

He knows to test paint removal and clogging for sandpaper because he's done it in real life. He tests chainsaw sharpeners after dulling the chain in the dirt because he's done it in real life. An authentic guy like us trying to figure out the best product, not another talking head shill unboxing or "review" that's nothing more than regurgitating the marketing wank.

Some brands that are great at 120 are absolutely rubbish at anything over 800 and vice-versa. I would love to see a breakdown at each major grit between all these brands.

  • Great test. Based on your results, I would say if you're an occasional user, go with the 3M. Spending the extra money for occasional use will not hurt you, and your sandpaper will last the longest. If you're a contractor or go through tons and tons of sandpaper on a regular basis, go with the regular Diablo brand. 90% of the performance at half the cost. Big cost savings over time.

    • Depends, if your paying for the sandpaper and also getting paid by the hour to sand diablo all the way. If your paying for the sandpaper and paying your guys by the hour to sand the 3M removed 32% more material in 25min. If the job is done in 40min vs 60min the extra $1 on sand paper is of little consequence.

    • A disc that lasts 20 percent longer and costs 250 percent more, is a conundrum for me. On one hand, it might save a Theoretical hour and a half per day. However, the reality is maybe 20 minutes . The paper savings is an questionable. I am a guy who walked into an automobile paint supply for a few sheets of sandpaper, post spraying primer, and saw a bill for $55. Back in the 90s I used a fast drying patch, lots of hugh quality oil spray of doors, and would spend 70 dollars for 1 or 2 rooms on sandpaper. So, I don't take the cost of sandpaper lightly. I went through hundreds of sheets on a few hundred feet of railing and backing 2 by 4 for strip and restaining, refinish. I routinely buy hundreds of 7 inch 24 grit grinder discs. I assure you that at 90 cents a resin backed disc beats a $5 3m disc every time. In this video, the diablo 36 cent disc (they are actually 20 cents) and the 3m stood out. If I didn't sand a lot, or it were not my money (the boss' money) I would go for the 3m. Now, if a guy could sand worth of diablo 10 hours of doors in 8 hours using 3m. If my labor is worth $15-$70 depending on the time of the year, this would be balanced against the extra cost of the 3m paper, which i would not be surprised if more than $140 given the kind of price gouging paint stores are guilty of..... It takes really big jobs and writing the data down, side by side, to form a good opinion.... From this video, the bet is on 3m or the diablo to go head to head in a real long job.

  • Awesome Job! The only thing I can think of to add would be a ranking of total grams removed per cost. Using the grams removed after 25 Minutes for price per gram removed Makitoyo $0.005 Diablo $0.009 Tigershark $0.010 Dura Gold $0.012 Norton $0.013 Mirka $0.014 3m $0.016 Bosch $0.017 Dewalt $0.020 Makita $0.026 sandnet $0.029

    • Also factor in time to the equation to improve the stack rank!

    • Yeah, If I'm interpreting you correctly. Even though the 3M was the better performer, you could change the Makitoyo to a new sheet 2 more times to get new sanding speed and still be cheaper than the 3M. The Diablo however, is the real competition, it sanded, stayed clean, and stayed sharp. It definitely made the Makitoyo less useful.

    • In the end what sandpaper costs is not the major factor in a job. Labor is.

  • I'm in process of a restoration of a old car. Hours and hours of sanding is ahead of me. You no doubt saved me many. What some disks I bought in error...Thank you once again.
