Independent consumer reviews like this are so unbelievably important, it cannot be understated how much these are appreciated. Not only does it provide clarity for the consumer, but the boost in reputation from preforming well on this channel no doubt challenges the manufacturer to strive to provide the highest quality product. Not only do you show us how to use our money best, it tells the companies that we want to spend out money wisely, and producing a HIGHER quality product becomes the standard.
Thanks!
Every time 3M is included in a test, i know the winner. I only watch the entire video because you're awesome.

USA products are best
3M certainly has a well-deserved reputation for high quality; overall results: 13:27 I'm really impressed that 3M Cubitron was the only brand which was hardly degraded at all by sanding on metal for 2 minutes: 13:16 True fact: I have a lot of 8" diskettes, with data on them, which I would love to recover. But the _ONLY_ brand which is still usable, 1/3 century later, is 3M. The other brands all self-destruct in the diskette drive, because the adhesive which sticks the oxide recording layer to the substrate has degraded, and the oxide comes off when the head rubs it. (Unfortunately, the data I want is on the other brand diskettes, mostly BASF and Wabash -- if anyone knows a way to read those diskettes, please contact me.)
@@arya3261 German products are the best
@@ProjectFarm I will ask a bit of a counter-question. So if you are looking at maximum removal, this test is perfect. The good performance of removing materials from some of the brands might also suggest that the grain size could be larger or rougher than on the lower performing brands, i.e. different production standards/quality. So if one brands 120-grit is actually a 125 grit, it of course should outperform another brand which have their 115-grit labelled as 120 grit. It would be interesting to see the performance between papers from different batches, to see if the quality is consistent between different manufacturing runs. Other times you might be looking for the best finish including (or the lack of) circular scratches, lesser risk of burning the materials, degrading between center and outer edges (leading back to finish quality) and etcetera. This might be a bit extreme lengths, but I think that this test could be worth revisiting with different criteria to test. All cheers for an awesome channel!
3M in the next few weeks: “why tf are we selling so much sand paper all the sudden?!” Hahahaha.
And Dewalt saying why are our sales in the dumper???
More like diablo for me!!!
Pros know about 3M. They make the only wet or dry I'll buy.
3m invented modern sandpaper back in the early 1900s. They started as a mining company but it was the invention and production of sandpaper that made them take off. Their name is on everything these days and they are one of the largest companies in the world because of sandpaper. "Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing", 3M. The "sand" on sand paper is a mining by-product.
@@1pcfred 3M wet diamond grit was what I use to use to get my snowboard, and skis ready for ski season, it was the only paper I found that would remove last seasons old wax, without gumming the paper up too bad. start at Blue 1200, and work my way up to pale green 8000, for the smoothest surface I could get, and then 3 coats of Mr Zogs SexWax

Wow! Thanks for sharing!
Yes and its a fairly safe guess what products they'll be stocking when Project Farm's test results are in. In this case Project Farm's testing is clearly having an effect on retailers' purchasing decisions. Otherwise they are being made purely on marketing hype and the "perceived" company reputation which time and time again Project Farm demonstrates are not reliable guides when trying to find the best products out there or alternatively price/performance.
Wish my local hardware store was that in tune with their market. I live in a yuppy area and even a brand new clean hardware store will have half the small hardware bins empty. Bums me out they make online my only option if I don't wanna a 50pack of bolts from a fastener specialist store
things like this are why the local hardware store has held on despite HD and Lowes. Besides nothing better when you need to fix something, the local hardware store owner always knows what you need. Show em some super odd nut or bolt and sure enough they have a drawer of them.

I've always enjoyed PF videos, but I just realized one more thing I think makes the channel great: you can tell he has the real life experience of using these products in daily life by the tests he chooses. I know one thing I'm buying my buddy with this stimulus payment. He's been furloughed through this pandemic and has turned to woodworking to pass time, but buys cheap sandpaper. I saw him go through an entire pack of [redacted]-brand sandpaper sanding maybe 75% of a chair he had built. I'd love to see his face when he can sand an entire picnic table with one sheet of Cubitron (or two sheets; I'm generous). Top-notch content as always. The prep work, the tests themselves, the microscopic views, the editing, the personality, humor, and award-winning smile deserve millions more subscribers.
That would be a very nice gift! Thanks for the nice comments!
My only criticism of the first test was immediately resolved, when you continued to test each sheet incrementally, up to 25 minutes (I thought you were going to stop testing at five minutes). After sanding tables for hours and hours at my last job, I can say with certainty that the quality of one brand can drastically change between grits. Some brands that are great at 120 are absolutely rubbish at anything over 800 and vice-versa. I would love to see a breakdown at each major grit between all these brands.

Great test. Based on your results, I would say if you're an occasional user, go with the 3M. Spending the extra money for occasional use will not hurt you, and your sandpaper will last the longest. If you're a contractor or go through tons and tons of sandpaper on a regular basis, go with the regular Diablo brand. 90% of the performance at half the cost. Big cost savings over time.
Sand net lasts significantly longer than the regular Diablo and it can be cleaned & reused. HD regularly runs hefty sales on 50 packs w/5 different grits. Sand net is a much better value than the Diablo.
Depends, if your paying for the sandpaper and also getting paid by the hour to sand diablo all the way. If your paying for the sandpaper and paying your guys by the hour to sand the 3M removed 32% more material in 25min. If the job is done in 40min vs 60min the extra $1 on sand paper is of little consequence.
Or buy 3m on sale. The longevity will make up for the fractional cost difference
After the initial testing I was like "only 5 minutes? Is Project Farm slacking?"... Oh was I WRONG!!! This went above and beyond my imagination for testing sandpaper. VERY impressive!!! 👍👍👍 NEVER again will I doubt thee.

@@j3b3mt1username Fair enough, but it's hard to imagine them being good, if money is being thrown away.
A disc that lasts 20 percent longer and costs 250 percent more, is a conundrum for me. On one hand, it might save a Theoretical hour and a half per day. However, the reality is maybe 20 minutes . The paper savings is an questionable. I am a guy who walked into an automobile paint supply for a few sheets of sandpaper, post spraying primer, and saw a bill for $55. Back in the 90s I used a fast drying patch, lots of hugh quality oil spray of doors, and would spend 70 dollars for 1 or 2 rooms on sandpaper. So, I don't take the cost of sandpaper lightly. I went through hundreds of sheets on a few hundred feet of railing and backing 2 by 4 for strip and restaining, refinish. I routinely buy hundreds of 7 inch 24 grit grinder discs. I assure you that at 90 cents a resin backed disc beats a $5 3m disc every time. In this video, the diablo 36 cent disc (they are actually 20 cents) and the 3m stood out. If I didn't sand a lot, or it were not my money (the boss' money) I would go for the 3m. Now, if a guy could sand worth of diablo 10 hours of doors in 8 hours using 3m. If my labor is worth $15-$70 depending on the time of the year, this would be balanced against the extra cost of the 3m paper, which i would not be surprised if more than $140 given the kind of price gouging paint stores are guilty of..... It takes really big jobs and writing the data down, side by side, to form a good opinion.... From this video, the bet is on 3m or the diablo to go head to head in a real long job.
Legend!!!! Love the comparisons in each video. We can see your dedication and commitment! Keep up the great work

A German joke used to be: "Why is there never any toilet paper in public bathrooms? Because woodworkers steal it to use as sandpaper!"
He may have saved Billy Ray's hands to connect up to a motor. Add some TP & Nutella, and you're good to go! LOL
Very timely review; I'm just about to buy a batch. Another great job on testing!
Thank you!
This channel's video quality has been the best since the start. Todd is amazing.
Thanks so much!
3m being a top performer doesn't surprise me they mostly make pretty good stuff
Thanks for the feedback.
You are one of the few channels I don't skip ads on. I've gotten so much bang for my buck thanks to you! Never change PROJECT FARM 🚜 👌 😉 👍 ♥
Thanks so much!
That was a great video. Thank you for doing it. I was looking for a better sand paper for my wood working. Thanks to you I found it. I ordered the 3M Cubitron paper. Keep up the videos.
Awesome! Thank you!
I do a whole lot of hand sanding and finishing on high carbon steel. I’ve always trusted rhino wet redline from indasa USA. Sucks to see you didn’t test it, I’ve found it better than any brand you’d find in a hardware store. Though in fairness not many stores carry it, and it’s mostly sold online. Great video none the less.
I knew that the cubitron would do well lol. I've been a supporter of it for years
Love their cut-off Wheels
Thanks for sharing.
I will happily flip out when I see a product in a store with the Project Farm Approved star/gear cog on it. You deserve it Todd & family, awesome content as always!
Thanks!
Really they have that? I will now keep an eye out for it..have never seen the logo but i just recently found this channel
@@opie7afe Not yet, but with the quality of the testing and Project Farms loyal fans I hope its soon!
Dude is so accurate and precise he really busts his ass to put this together!
Subscribed cause I love how in depth this video was!! Love the content!
Thanks! Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Awesome Job! The only thing I can think of to add would be a ranking of total grams removed per cost. Using the grams removed after 25 Minutes for price per gram removed Makitoyo $0.005 Diablo $0.009 Tigershark $0.010 Dura Gold $0.012 Norton $0.013 Mirka $0.014 3m $0.016 Bosch $0.017 Dewalt $0.020 Makita $0.026 sandnet $0.029
Thanks
wow!
Also factor in time to the equation to improve the stack rank!
Yeah, If I'm interpreting you correctly. Even though the 3M was the better performer, you could change the Makitoyo to a new sheet 2 more times to get new sanding speed and still be cheaper than the 3M. The Diablo however, is the real competition, it sanded, stayed clean, and stayed sharp. It definitely made the Makitoyo less useful.
In the end what sandpaper costs is not the major factor in a job. Labor is.
It looks like I’ve been using the wrong sandpaper as well! Awesome test!!
Thank you!
I was not expecting this to be covered but I'm happy it was. Let's go!
Thank you!
I'm in process of a restoration of a old car. Hours and hours of sanding is ahead of me. You no doubt saved me many. What some disks I bought in error...Thank you once again.
You are welcome!
