Hearing their voices together, isolated from all the instruments is so powerful. Hits you right in the guts.
kbertan Give me the entire track with just their vocals. 👍
kbertan it does. They sound awesome together
Sounds like someone got a little spongy listening to 2 men singing.
Very gay sounding statement.
Get it cos he had an unexplainable stomach ache
goddamm it... the way kurt and dave's voice mix gives me the chills
DITTO double tracked on that one
That was awesome
I got a boner
yah
chills=demons
Hearing that Dave was singing this I can imagine the Foo Fighters doing an awesome version. Kurt and Dave sound awesome singing together
I can't believe I saw you here.
The Foo Fighters don't have Kurt singing. It would be crap.
Nah. Foo fighters are blah. Without Kurt it would sound like trash
Can’t please everyone, if they sounded like they used to people would say (just like they did when they first came out) they’re just a Nirvana clone, then they do their own thing and it’s just bland lol damned if you do or don’t.
2:10 The way the instruments kick in while Kurt and Dave are singing the song a capella is SO GOOD!
I never really noticed Dave's voice in this song before, but now after watching this I can't help but hear his voice every time I listen to this song lol, but it's true they're voices really do sound great together.
He’s practically screaming to get his voice up that high. I didn’t even realize that was on the track but now I listen for it every time.
Omg the isolated vocals
never knew Dave sang with Kurt on the track :O
Ellis Sinnott dave also sang on a song called " marygold"and kurt played the drums
Station 2 dave Sang in almost every song on nevermind
Wardo Melena true that but in the song marygold they switch roles completely, the song sounds like a foo fighter song
Station 2 yeah i know that song i thinks is just more like a dave song because of that sound like a ff song because you know ff are basically dave
Wardo Melena yup
Butch: alright were looping for the 7th time. Kurt: I swear to- Butch: john Lennon did it. Kurt: oh cool.

One of the best choruses ever.
When in doubt double it!!
actually, it's intentionally made to give that sort of feeling, it goes with the song's lyrics. and it's, uh... basically an insult to almost everyone listening to it. kurt was kind of a dick.
drumtravelfun best ever ? you definitely need to listen to more music.

Butch : "John Lennon did it" Kurdt : "Ok"

Kurt is soo cute
why are you guys spelling "Kurt" "KurDt" ???
bc kurt liked to spell it like that sometimes himself
*helio c* well I didn't know that, thank you (:
1:07 Dave's voice is incredible!
He definitely brought more than drums to the band. Chad was a good drummer, but Dave brought more firepower.
well he went on to be a pretty successful vocalist...
Who knew
Still no matching the Staley-Cantrell duo though.
He sounds like the guy from foo fighters
And people, stfu about Butch 'manipulating'. It's clear to me that one of the reasons Nirvana achieved commercial success and reached far more people was due to the album being well mixed and well produced. Some of you people are acting as if it's a crime to produce an album well. GET OVER IT
Yes...fabulous band, but the world bought it because it was gift wrapped perfectly...the production matters
why can't i press 'read more'
kurt liked his stuff to be made exactly the way he liked it though. you could say this isn’t really nirvana, but the way butch wanted it to be
Bob Rock over produced the Black Album too against what Metallica was used to and it turned out to be their best commercially successful album!
It's all about the double tracked vocals. Butch was very smart to goad Kurt with the Lennon reference. Even though Nirvana hated the sound of this record for being too polished, Butch and Andy Wallace (Mixer) made it feel massive and extraordinarily powerful.
Yeah, most people just dont think about the producer role on this album, they had the songs with good hooks and stuff but he made them sound amazing.
"better" is subjective. Congrats, you just stated an opinion.
In Utero is THE Nirvana sound IMO. But you can't deny how huge those drums sounded in "Nevermind".
That’s the shit they said in interviews. I know what sound they did like though CHA-CHING!!! Polish that.
skunkproductionsMLA it’s all about the beginning in Breed
I love when they dissect tunes using the board. In most recordings there are almost always things you had no idea were there.
Yeah. Did you ever hear the female vocal on Everlong that was recorded down the telephone? It's barely noticeable on the record
I must have watched this 100 times over the years. Dave and Kurt's voices together are fucking epic!
This album is a production master piece. It was beautifully mixed and still sounds amazing today.
Dave: *plays crazy fill* Also Dave: "I didn't throw a bunch of drum fills in there."
Speaking from a drummers pov here it's not to complex of a fill and it's quite tasty and it serves the song well
Always thought Dave was playing Chad channing's drums on in bloom since they had the song before he joined.
For real, the whole song is drum fills.
I think it's amazing how they put songs together
Cindy Cox Right?
In Bloom...still my favorite Nirvana song.

James I guess you could say you Didn’t know what it meant
Yeah and you’ll never hear it the same way again.
That's what triple vocal tracks do to lyrics man.
@@simoncenteno2755 That's what Kurt does to lyrics. John Lennon can double-track and harmonize at the time.
Greatest producer of all time. Nevermind and Siamese Dream are two of the greatest sounding albums ever, so much comes down to Butch.
Hearing those vocals isolated is something we all needed in our lives
1:06: Whoah- 1) Never knew that Dave sang alongside Kurt ever, in a way being the Jerry Cantrell to Kurt's Layne Staley in a way (though here, it's Kurt that's singing at the baritone register). 2) Ah- Dave singing before Foo Fighters! 3) Love the sketchy effect that the isolated tracks provide- inspirational in a way, makes me feel pumped up about recording something of my own! This is a gem of a video with tremendous value- thanks!
I love how this song has vocal harmonies and vocal doubling when one of the lines in the chorus is about liking to sing along.
when it’s just Kurt and Dave. that’s the most beautiful sound i’ve ever heard
Dave and Kurt singing together is AWESOME!
This is my fav nirvana song fuk they did a good job with production on that album... feels fresh today as it did in 91
I could watch shit like this all day everyday.
This gives me chills.
Kurt and Dave's harmonising was underrated
They sold 80 million albums, hardly underrated.
@@Kenziegh Did I say Nirvana was underrated, smart man? lol
They only compares to Lennon / McCartney harmonies.
Kurt and Dave’s voices were made to harmonise together!! Epic as fuk!! Modern day McCartney Lennon!!!
I always loved the harmonic dynamic between them both. Especially in Drain You.
0:33 [[[drum fill]]] 0:35 "i didn't throw a bunch of drum fills in there..."
There's people out there who do it over the top haha, Grohl doesn't though
He said throw a bunch. That was one :D
Tom Faron tom hits...but whatevs. and btw, i was only fucking around with my original comment.
Tom Faron ah, i stand corrected. funny, i never noticed the difference between the first pass earlier that has snare with toms. you're right, it's all snare there.
It was actually Chad Channing that created the drum track for this song, it was arranged before Dave was in the band. He basically played what Chad had arranged.
Just a blanket statement to prevent more dumb comments: Nevermind was recorded onto 2" tape. Not Pro Tools. In 1991, Pro Tools was in it's 1.0 version and had only 4 tracks and cost $6000.00. Few people were using it yet. Butch took each track stem from the tapes and dumped them into ProTools for this documentary. Troll on.
Mike Patton Is it really you Mike
Mike Patton I am pretty sure he used PT for editing though. Or something digital. It was for sure recorded on tape but for how accurate the vocals are I am sure they did editing (And there was one song... I think it was drain you... Where you can actually hear the tone of the vocals change just slightly... Like it wasn't the original. Or if they did use the editing block and cut and taped it then the guy who did it has a pretty steady hand...)
It was actually Andy Wallace who mixed it and Andy used Atari sampling software to punch up the snare and kick on a few songs and also a few backup vox.
Oh okay. But yea it sounds to me like it was edited digitally and not on tape. Recorded on tape yes but not edited.
N617A The album would not have been released until 1999 if they had done the editing digitally back then. rendering ONE track of a 5 minute song could take HOURS back then.
Wow, Dave sounds so good. He really should consider making a band.
one of the coolest catchiest backing harmonies ever tbh
Nirvanas sound is so fresh and timeless
I just assumed the higher harmony was Kurt. I know Dave did harmonies in other songs but didn’t know in this song too. Damn that’s reminiscent of Jerry and Layne. Kurt and Dave are a beautiful combo 🖤🖤🖤 Thanks for the insight Butch
Same here. It wasn’t until I saw this segment of classic albums that Dave actually sang on several tracks? I don’t remember if he was credited on the album sleeve or not?
2:10 That sounds HEAVENLY!
Thank you so much Butch Vig!! You help The greatest Artist ever to gave us the best album of all time !
Agreed
I actually like how Krist's bass part sounds a bit on the flatter side of the notes he's playing, it tends to give the whole thing a weird "pitch-bent electric current" feel. Don't know if anyone hears it the way I do, though.
I thought the same thing!
I know exactly what you mean. It's probably the chorus effect that Andy Wallace, who mixed loads of huge 90s rock records, famously put on the bass. Quite exaggerated in solo isn't it?
totally bro! and why loads of old dub reggae basslines sound interesting due to cheap badly intonated instruments or ones with inherent design limitations ...Beatles Hofner bass detunes higher up neck you which why Pauls basslines sound so special.... .... ..... when youre listening high.....
The "polish" on this entire album helped it form that mythical bridge from punk (my music at the time) to heavy metal (which I said I hated but secretly loved). Here was an honest and heavy sound that had massive hooks, a plain fashion aesthetic, and was just great songwriting. I was stunned when I heard this album at 21 years of age. When I heard "Teen Spirit" on KROQ in Los Angeles, I thought, "This isn't Rodney on the Roq late at night. Why are they playing this stuff?"
i get chills whenever they play the harmonies with Dave and Kurt
One of the best records of all-time
Gotta love Kurt and Dave's voices together. An amazing blend. It's amazing how similar they are.
Dave playing drums and singing along with Kurt playing guitar, it doesn't get much better than that!!! Nirvana ruled
In bloom is such a fucking cool tune i love Nirvana’s sense of dynamics
It's beautiful 😢
Love these videos
Their backing singer sounds like the foo fighters singer. He should definitely start up a tribute band or something
Joel's Stuff I hope this is a joke
I'm pretty sure it is tbh
He looks like the Foo Fighters guy too. OMG Hehehe
It is, come on. Look up I’ll stick around.
God I hope this is a joke. The drummer of nirvana Dave Grohl started foo fighters after Kurt died.
Wow, so much respect for Kurt singing each and every vocal on Nevermind twice with such perfection and quality...And hats off to Butch, otherwise the record would've sounded like another Fecal Matter tape...
CRUZ3 No it wouldn't. That makes no sense. The fecal matter tape was never even recorded in a studio.
RebelThoughts82 I was just slighting at what it could've sounded like, regardless if it were recorded in a studio or not. I guess if you want a better example, I would say "Bleach". Just listen to the "In Bloom" alternative version to get a better idea. Although the drummers were different, Butch did play a significant role to make Nirvana more pop-friendly and refined to reach a wider audience.
CRUZ3 That had nothing to do with Butch. Had more to do with Kurt's songwriting.
+CRUZ3 Don't forget Andy Wallace, who did the mix. The rejected Vig mix sounds much like being another 'Bleach'.
CRUZ3 What would be so bad about another bleach?
damn their voices sound great together on their own! And that's some top note that Dave hits, two excellent singers :)
In Bloom can be defined as one of their most defining songs. Heavy and plush at the same time with Kurts penchant for using biological references to tell his story.
I know people say Lithium is the quintessential Nirvana song, but really to me at least it In Bloom. It's heavy, catchy, goes through every dynamic they use in their music, and Kurt's best solo.
Butch: “John Lennon did it” Kurt: Yes
my all time fav nirvana song🖤
Beautiful ..i love Nirvana 4 ever🔝🔝🔝♥️♥️♥️😍😍
butch and also his band are such awesome guys. GO Madison
Id love to know what Kurt and Krist thought when they heard/discovered Dave had such a great voice. That's a proper high harmony that Kurt probably couldn't get near. Surprised Dave's voice want utilised more. Especially on the records. Pat smear did a good job live to be fair. But harder to do harmonies while banging the drums as opposed to playing guitar. And we all know how good a singer Dave is now. Mad isn't it.
Sir yes sir.
as much as i hate dave after the past few years, his vocals were WAY better than Pats
Beautiful moment, thank you
This helps enjoy the song more
Butchs work in Nervermind is amazing. The harmonies in in bloom are one of the best in music history
@MorbidManMusic A doubled vocal of the same note is done by almost every band in existence, lol. How is that a Beatle ripoff?
Many say Nevermind was overproduced. Bullshit. Vig captured both their tunefulness and aggression. Cobain complained it didn’t sound punk enough. Well you can’t have it all.
I think you can, this is how a punk band should sound in 1991. I thought it was Scream, when I first heard and saw them on video. The drumming was so similar to them due to Dave Grohl.
I never really viewed it as punk album, but that's okay. The punk attitude is still there in places. I think Butch is probably the only person that could have captured their sound the way he did at the time. The band didn't really sound this way live, but that was another cool thing altogether. You knew seeing them live wasn't going to be like pressing play on the CD.
Kurt didn't know what he wanted. He wanted a pure punk album, but then when In Utero was recorded, he sends it over to Scott Litt to remix some songs to make them more pop. I do think that Nevermind was indeed too polished in certain spots, but it's the album that put them over the top, so who am I to argue.
I think a lot of the songs on nevermind are just more pop than something like in utero. Even the hits on IU aren’t pop.
Oh wow. Look at this gem of a video!! This is amazing to see what was going through butch's mind while mixing the song. Thanks for posting this!
Cannot express how much I love this deconstruction
The drumming of 'In Bloom' is mostly copied from what Chad Channing did. Dave Grohl himself has admitted that.

0:42 - I wish there were more bass players who think this way in the world. Specially being as good as Krist was on his bass. I love his tone that usually wasn't too fat or fuzzy, but it also had that crisp to it that is rare in this genre of music. I really dislike bass tone that hass too much distortion or is too fat on those hi lows & low mids :/ I also love that he could come up with some really fantastic bass likes like Lounge Act, but at the same time the most important thing about the bass is that it's consistant in volume - all parts, all notes as consitant volume as possible because those fine compressors can't do mirracles if your take isn't any good. That way you can mix it properly into the music and it becomes the foundation of the song where everything else just comfortably sits on it. :3
It's.. weird to hear his voice alone. You can hear the angst and feeling in his voice... As for the voice doubling technique, it makes a lot of sense... two voices are always stronger than one, and it gives a great power. And it's awesome to know Kurt was such a big fan of Lennon. R.I.P., the both of them.
legendary stuff by legendary artists
1:17 listen to when he puts the instruments back in after the isolated voices that’s so cool
Kurt doesn't strike me as a perfectionist yet the harmony he does with himself is so spot on it's almost leading to noise cancellation/phasing. Interesting.
