Alien vs. Predator is what happens when you team up two beloved sci-fi creatures in the most boring way possible. It's terrible. And it has sins to spare.
Next week: comedy sins & animated sins.
Remember, no movie is without sin. Which movie's sins should we count next?

  • One point: it's been well established throughout the Predator films that the Predators Do not attack the unarmed, pregnant or sick. They look for warriors. Unless you push it, yes, a deadly illness will keep you from being murdered by a Predator. Not defending this film, but that part has been canon since the 80s.

    @troyorem@troyorem3 жыл бұрын
    • You’re absolutely right and cinemasins doesn’t know what he’s talking about. The Yautja constructed the pyramid so anyone entering would trigger the ritual, get trapped and then facehugged. All so the unblooded Yautja could become blooded and ascend into their clan

      @mksilver@mksilver3 жыл бұрын
    • @@mksilver Okay, but if ritual sacrifice was part of the culture the Predators fostered then why the floor trigger, instead of a big START THE RITUAL lever? Did the Preds come back and remodel the place after the big nuclear blast in the past? "Maybe we can lure some future humans here when they have tech to find it!"

      @scockery@scockery3 жыл бұрын
    • @@scockery yh we humans are dumb and would probably pull a lever without questioning it 😆 but makes more sense that the “activation” be hidden so the prey is unaware whats gonna happen. In the flashback scene from thousands of years ago, we willingly sacrificed ourselves but seems this may not always have been the case. The Yautja seem to use this pyramid every 100 years so easily would have rebuilt it (or we did as their worshippers). Remember the pyramid is like a maze designed to test the Yautja so making all this pressure plates etc is very believable

      @mksilver@mksilver3 жыл бұрын
    • @@mksilver Of course, the whole point of letting Humans enter the pyramid first was for them to encounter Facehuggers and breed Xenomorphs. However, it's still an extremely bad idea to use a lever or a pressure plate that can easily and/or unwittingly activated by a Human, instead of a mechanism that can only be activated by a Predator. Don't forget they can't allow the Xenomorphs to take over their proving grounds, since it's far too important to them. First, they need the proving ground for their youngsters, so imagine if they travelled all the way to planet Earth, just to see it's either a warzone or a post-apocalyptic wasteland where the sole remaining species is the Xenomorph (proving oneself in a controlled hunt and being thrown into a war of that scale, without the proper experience, are two drastically things). Second, it seemed to me that they would consider it the ultimate dishonour if they allowed their prey to gain such power (they would rather erase all traces of their passage and the civilisations they have influenced than allow the world to realise they have failed to contain the Xenomorphs). Besides, they seem far more interested in the hunt than in invading other planets (at least, that's just my two cents), so there really is no point in becoming too 'noticeable' to the Humans (and, yes, that includes making sure to keep the Xenomorph population properly contained).

And the incisors and canine combination is human like, combined with the humanoid limb structure... Which is in contrast to the "Runner" Alien from Alien 3 which was more quadrupedal because of coming from a cow (or dog). Really, the whole "Aliens take some qualities from their host" was an incredibly interesting part of their lore and a reason the arcade game went absolutely wild with winged aliens and scorpion aliens and it is profoundly disappointing that it is comparatively unused in the movies.

Typically they may kill anyone they see with a weapon, but sometimes they just decide to spare someone out of pity in a sportsman sense, like it's not manly to hunt a deer that's already limping and unable to run, these are an entire species of hunters with deep honor systems. The one in the second movie killed every person in the subway car because everyone happened to be armed, even little old ladies, but didn't kill the female cop who was pregnant. But almost did kill a child at the cemetary who was holding a toy gun because it couldn't tell if it was real or not, I think it only changed its mind when the boy seemed to notice it in the tree (even though it wsa cloaked) and offered it candy, and it decided he wasn't a threat at the time.

  • The Predators weren’t “dicking around in space” after cutting the tunnel to the pyramid with their space laser. The movie revealed later that the Predators deliberately lured humans to the Antarctica pyramid so they’d get Facehuggered and produce the xenomorphs that the Predators wanted to hunt, to earn their prized Plasmacasters and the right to bear the special mark that indicated they had killed a xenomorph. The Predators weren’t going to sacrifice their own people to the Aliens. And they weren’t there simply to retrieve the Plasmacasters. It was part of their ritual to EARN their prizes. That’s also the reason there were 3 Predators and 3 guns. The Predators lasered the tunnel through the ice to HELP the humans reach the pyramid faster, because it would’ve taken the humans weeks or months to reach the pyramid, IF they could’ve accomplished it at all. The Predators sat back and WAITED for the humans to reach the pyramid, trip the switch that defrost the Alien Queen, produce eggs, and get ambushed by the Facehuggers, so there’d be xenomorphs for the Predators to hunt. If anything deserves a cinema sin, it’s that the Predators’ elaborate setup plan working so perfectly it could only happen in a movie.

  • The Xenomorphs have always taken on qualities and attributes of their host, this is why the one in Alien 3, which came out of a dog looked different, and if you look at the comics, there are lots of other Xenomorphs that look different from having different species hosts. And the length of time an alien takes to incubate and hatch depends on what kind it is. The most common ones, the drones/workers, hatch fairly quickly. The soldiers (like the one from the first movie) take longer. The queens take the longest to hatch, The Predalien at the end is a queen, hence why it lays eggs in the sequel, it just looks very different from the standard queen and isn't stuck in place with a huge birthing canal.

A chestburster from a human isn't really that big, smaller than a regular house cat, then molts into an adolescant form which is the one we see in the first movie. The process is very short actually as the first alien wiped out the crew of the Nostromo in less that a day. The alien in the third movie, birthed by a quadruped, doesn't have the ability to stand up on two legs easily. Then the predalien has predator mandibles and dreadlocks as well as a more predator shaped head. Generally those are much larger as well, though not as large as a praetorian.

    • "How can you put together two iconic sci-fi creatures and make such a ho-hum movie"? By aiming for a PG-13 rating. It was inevitable that the crossover of two R-rated creature-features would be compromised weaksauce as soon as it was saddled with that PG-13 rating. And the "unrated" cut doesn't fix much, either, because the whole film was shot with that PG-13 rating in mind so there was virtually no "harder" material to actually put back in.
