    • Oh interesting! I think thats the difference to us europeans. We have more place for bikes to drive & walk ways & a lot of parks to walk on. I always go by feet or bike when I need to do something that’s not so far away!

      @ZeBiii@ZeBiiiАй бұрын
    • @@ZeBiii A small window into my life - I live an hour+ away from my job. I drive 11.5 hrs a week for work commute. Even in my smaller hometown, the only place with sidewalks is IN the downtown area. I must drive even to my parents house (12 minute drive) or I'd be smooshed flat from big trucks and semis. The capital city of my state (where I work) has 690,000 ppl living in it and only has bus routes. They've been trying for YEARS to get some sort of expanded bus route or train/trolley set up, but there isn't the infrastructure or space the way the city has been built. YET my capital city is one of the fastest growing in the country of people moving here from other states (gentrification is happening rampantly). I had a coworker who tried to bike to work (he lived in the city). After one week of cycling, twice did someone inentionally try to run him off the road, and ppl around here will steal a bike right out from underneath you. (My capital city's violence is also increasing as well as homelessness). There are many areas that simply aren't safe to walk to and from :(

      @mmwoodcockart@mmwoodcockartАй бұрын
    • @@ZeBiiiyup. European communities were built in an age where everyone walked. So things were walking distance. American communities were much more spread out, so we’re far more reliant on cars here. There’s a reason why some of the lowest obesity rates in America are also found in major northern cities; having to walk more means more calories burned, meaning less weight. Rural life in America is completely car dependent.

      @hornetguy9063@hornetguy9063Ай бұрын
    • Exactly, and apparently from the research I've done - America's car companies years ago lobbied the government to make the economy and architecture revolve around cars. So these places are just baron fast food chain wastelands with nowhere to walk, only drive. It's terrible, not necessarily the sole reason for such a low quality of life and drug addiction, but a major contributing factor. If you don't have practical access to healthy infrastructures (activites, healthy food) you're just stuck, screwed and one of the unlucky ones unless you're the 1 out of 10 million who hits jackpot on the lotto scratcher.

  • Interesting. In Germany healthy or at least "normal" food is cheaper than fast food. Mostly because the manpower costs per product in a super market are way lower than in a restaurant. For a 500 gram pan-ready meal from the super market with spinach noodles, wild salmon fillet, carrots, onions, parsley, dill and chives, I pay about 3 euros, or about $3.20. A small meal at McDonalds on the other hand costs about 10 Euros.

  • Just like the ghettos in the cities, which are talked about a bit more, there are so many areas in rural America that are suffering unimaginably. Not everyone in these places is without blame, but just like in the cities, the circumstances can make it hard to break out and do well. Throw in crap influences, drugs everywhere, etc., and it just becomes a nightmare. It is a real bummer.

    • @@taylemgames2652 And rural America receives 100X the sympathy that "ghettos" do. The crack epidemic in the inner cities have always been responded to with criminalization - arresting and jailing users and dealers. Every light that has shined on the rural drug epidemic has always been focused on the root of the problem, which is something that has never been afforded to urban drug issues. So those funds that you mention are going towards a bigger, more aggressive police force in urban areas who only want to jail all involved, while rural residents are offered better and more effective alternatives like rehabilitation.

      @AnneTamarask@AnneTamaraskАй бұрын
    • @@taylemgames2652rural areas are ghetto. No the ghettos don't recieve more and if they do its becuase they live in the city and the city collects more tax dollars than people that live in small towns or rural areas. As a matter of fact rural areas take more tax dollars than they put in. Up keeping the roads that head into rural areas isn't cheap.

Back in my hometown of Gilbert, WV there’s coal miners that work 50-60 hours a week but still go to the gym and compete in powerlifting. I think the biggest is we’re fighting so many battles such as addiction, work and how depressing this state is as a whole. Everybody here knows someone fighting addiction, it’s in my family and countless other. I’m 21 and my generation is for sure changing the stereotype, everybody I know is pushing for more people to get in the gym and we are really showing how fun and beneficial the gym can be to everyone no matter what age. Thank you for coming to our area and showing people that there’s reasoning to the claim we’re the unhealthiest state!

    • Had lower back issues for years. The hardest part is going to be not pushing it. I stopped traditional deadlifts and heavily modified my squats to still stimulate growth with lighter loads (slow eccentric and pause at the bottom). You can still workout safely, but the hardest part is just being willing to adjust your exercises and the numbers you want to hit.

  • Great video, thank you for sharing these real life stories. I hope it inspires people to stay strong, never give up and be there for each other, support one another. And also appreciate what you have more if you don’t have to struggle like that. It kinda breaks my heart to see that gov. policies in W.V. (in my opinion) have opened these doors to poverty, boredom, unhealthy habits, addiction, chemical supps… Live is apparently so expensive and/or jobs being so underpaid you have to work crazy hours…(like the guy in the coal mines). I hope the community can build on something together to enable more activity and support. The guys who overcame their addictions would be a great example for others, like youth… It makes you wanna do something, help them out to build on something for the future… ❤ from the Netherlands.

That’s half of the time he’s awake when not working.
