Drag races in GTA Online are as bad as I imagined they would be...

In this video I take a short break to take a look at the drag racing in its final form in Grand theft auto Online and reaffirm my suspicions that this would be as bad as I anticipated it would when I saw it a few weeks ago.

  • Drag Racing should have been a Free Roam thing where you can challenge anyone using either 1: anything other than maybe a few locked cars. 2: select cars as long as you're in it. Once activated with challengers chosen or accepted invites, it will redirect you and the challengers to a set location on the map to use (hopefully you're smart enough to be close to one already), like the airport lanes or similar long distance flat roads. Once there, the game will put you and the challengers in set locations and perform normally like how it is already. Only difference is there's no loading and it's still on the free roam map. To do this, it can make you all a ghost to any outside forces and vice versa for others in the lobby watching. (including vehicles, NPCs, Players, destroyed vehicles or debris, ect.) You win, get the money, and still be in ghost for 30 or so more seconds so no griefer can post race kill you because they're mad. This may take a few more steps in coding and game making to make it work, but it would have been SO MUCH better than just making a loading screen nightmare of a gamemode for only 30 seconds of racing.

    • I mean most of the R* staff is working on GTA VI, only around 5 to 10 people are actually working on GTA Online, so it's reasonable.

  • You know there is a mod on GTA5mods called Drag Meets (which was made in 2017) where not only did they beat Rockstar to drag racing in GTA, but did it way better. One reason was because the script automatically disables traffic in the area so you won't have any distractions and fair races, and did a much better burnout system with manual shifting and just short drag straights. It's still insane to me people that know a few lines of code on a zero budget can do better than a billion dollar studio.

    • I've been enjoying the drag races lately with upgrading some of my vehicles left in my garages and testing them out to see which one can perform the best, wish there was a way to switch ur manual shift to L1/LB to have it feel and control similar to NFS Heat & The Crew 2

  • I found them really easy to get into and they are really fun. That being said the money is crazy low. Double money and winning is 3k. That’s bad but the race I found pretty fun

    • What they should've done was have a buy in for 10K - 30K per racer plus bets, and whoever wins walks with the entire pot. High Risk High Reward. That's how real life street races go. That'll give more incentive to do these. But Rockstar insists you buy shark cards instead.

  • Yes, i was disappointed, too. I played them all alone, to have them marked, but i never will play them again. The only good thing is, that it shows your speed. So now we have an ingame tool for that. IF we can create our own ones, that would be a nice way to compare cars.

  • I'm surprised that you criticized the races for being too long... R* potentially making them too short was what worried me about it in the first place, since that would de-incentivize ppl more from even joining them.

  • I actually enjoy this race mode, but they probably should rename it and make it implemented in free roam. I missing some adjustments, on all cars the ratio are way to close and I don't like when you hit the nozzle your camera zoom out. I would enjoy a real 402m race on the airport or on a straight.

  • They could keep it how it is but introduce pinkslips. That would be quite cool. But you there would have to be certain classes of vehicles so you couldn’t use it to give a level 1 a krieger or something

  • Is the funniest part about these races so you have to look at your speedometer to get perfect timing like gear changes but the thing is you're racing on a road with cars so you have to look at the road and look at that while trying not to crash because if you crash then you lose but if you don't change your Gears at the right time and you also lose

  • Honestly, after 2 races. i got bored 😴 they should add a ludendorff DLC where players can either fly to or use fast travel via LSIA and do robberys, cruise around or at least something a big snowy map to travel do for something different

  • It’s good to know R* doesn’t know the meaning of drag racing 🙄 Even the F&F scene, for how long it was, was in a STRAIGHT LINE. It feels like this was meant for the Tuners update but was finished in time, so they threw it in this update.

  • The inability of game companies to make legitimate drag racing must be a job requirement at this point. "Come join our racing game development team, the main requirement is you cannot know how drag racing works (or any racing in fact)"

  • They tried to imitate the old NFS games's drag races. Long distrance (for a drag race atleast) and scripted traffic and overpowered nitrous.

  • Sadly, drag races are just a glorified mini-game. Once you've mastered the burn-out and gear-shifting, you're just queuing for 3 minutes to drive in a straight line for 30 seconds. Also, why is the selection of cars so severely limited? I have dozens of muscle cars in my garage, but Rockstar will only let me use a few of them in drag races.

  • Wel...a Drag race is normaly a way to show how much power and how fast your build is. So we have a problem with this: You dont really have a real build in this game. All cars have his straight and weaks...and thats it. You cant tune the performance it individualy. You cant even create a custom design...but thats different to the performance. DO you have the Fastest car for this mode, you win, if you dont mess up the shifting. Its mosly an EZ win without a crash. Thats not race, if the car makes you win. It should be your skill.

    • @@commanderblack5045 still the payout is extremely low. If you do them for an hour you will make less than 50,000 maybe rockstar should have gone and figured out how much money per hour you can make for it and then done it that way.

  • Because in real life you have a point to point in a drag race here is our start point so tell me Geniuses where the endpoint to a drag race how far are we going look I already won and you're still stuck at the start line some people say they want jobs that have no notion of them it makes you wonder do you even want to do the job never mind you're still trying to do the job why try and still fail why not do and get it completed

  • A drag race...with checkpoints and other cars on the street...so basically, a street race with shotty manual transmission features and a nitrous boost. I don't think Rockstar understands the concept of a drag race. In fact, I'm 100% sure they don't understand the concept of a drag race. Unbelievably stupid!!!

  • Ok, the drag racing itself is lame. got it. Buuut....what's this? A speedometer AND manual shifting??!!! 😁😁😁😁😁 Can this PLEASE be a thing in the game in general?! (11 years late, at that) Both of those things would add a ton of life/realism to gtav. Pop it in story mode as well, along with a bunch of OL cars, as long as their at it..ok..now I'm just being crazy :p The FiveM purchase is paying off.

  • The best part is that in an advertisement for the Drag Races, someone is using the Gauntlet Classic Custom, a car that you can't even use in the races.

  • this one i agree with you they kinda suck, the only cool thing is the speedometer, the camera in this mode is wonky as fuck it suck, the shifting of the gears feels weird, 9 shifts for a car with 130mph top speed is stupid.
