  • Ya'll, please don't do this. A heavy barnacle load is a sign that the turtle is sick, and removing the barnacles by force can really damage the carapace and plastron of the turtle (which are softer and more fragile than you think). You're basically just taking a sick animal and giving it a potentially infectious wound. Bring it to a rehabilitation center where it can get the care it needs. If there's no chance of you getting it to a rehabilitation center, then place the turtle in fresh water. The turtle can survive in fresh water for several hours. The barnacles cannot. Release the turtle after a few hours in the fresh water bath, and they'll fall off on their own. The turtle will still likely be sick, but at least won't be wounded from the barnacles being pried off. Source: Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Project

    • You seem to be correct my man, thanks. "Removing the barnacles by force hurts the turtles," said Ms Jabado. The best way to help is to ensure any sick turtles quickly reach the rehabilitation centre, where they can receive specialised care. The centre places the turtles in fresh water, which they can withstand for a few days."

  • If you are going to take the barnacles off of the Turtles, please make sure they dive when you release them. If they don’t dive, they are sick and need rehabilitation. That would explain the amount of barnacles on them. Scoop them back up if they just swim on the top of the water. They most likely have a respiratory illness or bacterial infection in their gut.

The active full grown sea turtles almost never have barnacles. This is nature weeding out the sedentary turtles and contributing to the food chain.

    • Miyuki Cailtix this actually hurts the turtles according to experts. "To avoid potential harm to these turtles, please refrain from cleaning or attempting to remove any barnacles." "Removing the barnacles by force hurts the turtles.” The best way to help is to ensure any sick turtles quickly reach a rehabilitation centre, where they can receive specialised care. An Marine Life specialist places the turtles in fresh water, which they can withstand for a few days. The procedure ensures that, within two to three days, any growth of barnacles and algae falls off or becomes much easier to remove.

  • My college biology teacher went on a tangent on how a sea turtle would be one of the worst animals you could be .Before hatching people and predators eat the eggs. At birth they have to dig up and to find water while getting picked off by predators. Then reach the ocean where they're helpless to more predators. As they grow, barnacles attach to them which they are helpless against. Lastly they try to eat or get impaled by the plastic that people throw in the ocean. A sea turtle have on of the hardest lives for just being born.

    • @@user-li2yq3sq8c Yes. It's a public study. We are putting notches in the upper and lower sides of their shell, so it doesn't hurt them. They do have nerves on the middle sides, but we don't touch them. The most harm they get is just being scared. While filing into their shell, they are shaken a bit so that's a bit scary. Then the most scary part is when they are spun in a circle so they can get a clean picture taken of them.
