I find the thing you do with the clutch and gas pedal incredibly hard, but no one has ever told me to watch the RPMs. This sonds like a good advice to beginners who are still trying to find their way around the car. For the first time I actually cannot wait to try this and see if I could start moving without shutting the car off a couple of times in a row.

Well motorcross bikes have nothing in the way of gauges so you’re already used to listening to the engine. Gauges can fail but engine sound’s won’t. I was really little when I started driving so I didn’t even know there was an RPM gauge till my mother told me

    • Another piece of advice I figured out on my own - When you are first learning to drive a manual, wear sandals. Doesn't matter if it's cold, wear socks with your sandals if you have to. It's much easier to find the bite point if your footwear has thin soles. In the first few days of learning to drive a manual, I was wearing regular shoes, and I kept stalling and bucking non-stop. I couldn't feel the bite point. Then on a whim, I decided to wear sandals. Like magic, the bite point became very obvious, and I instantly stopped stalling and bucking. So, wear sandals, it'll make your life easier.

Not sure if it's the same where you're from but in my case, for the written exam, review traffic rules and regulations, your licensing office might have an online reviewer for the exam. This is important because they won't even let you do a test drive if you fail. For the driving test, it's all about how much you practice, so it's better if you have a car and someone to teach you since you will spend less in driving school. I'm a car guy, so I love cars but my first lesson was digitally (in our country it's called a Trenažer - basically drive in a mock of a vehicle and you see using the tv screen infront of you). I stalled almost everytime I tried to set off, I shifted badly twice and so on. Thankfully, my current instructor is chill about it and said that it's a lot different in real life than digitally and that I'll get the hang of it eventually.

Absolutely something in here for every single beginner. Class video mate!

    • I am currently doing lessons (only had 2), but I can't believe my instructor hasn't said anything like that either. When I asked why the car moved like that the instructor (and everyone I would ask when asking doing little trials before my official lessons) would always just say the same thing - you're coming off the clutch too quickly. I don't know what version of English these people are speaking compared to me but 'quickly' doesn't mean or imply 'without pausing'. If anything saying you come off it too quickly makes you think slow but continous is what you should be doing - which is still not correct 🙄

  • Thank you man, you taught me how to drive in an Automatic when I first got my Ls, and to always give way to the right or anyone on the roundabout! Now you're teaching me how to drive in manual! You're saving lives here man, truly.

  • This explanation addressed my problem in my practical driving course that was really hard for my driving instructor to give a thought and address it in 8hrs, making it very hard for me to keep my timing on the clutch to start the car to accelerate smoothly. Now I could only wish to have watch this much earlier.

  • My dad always said that the increase and decrease with gas and clutch was gradual. The way described here was much more in line with what I imagined the gears doing.
