This case is based on publication in literature by Harrison R, Warburton V, Lux A, Atan D. Ann Intern Med. 2019 Sep 3. Link below. Non-clinical elements (e.g. initials, story details, etc) are adapted. Peer Review: Dr. Nikhil Parelkar.
I originally had another case for video of a vitamin b12 deficiency I saw as a student about a girl on an overly strict diet. I didn't release it because the details were more difficult than I would like for a video. The clinical principles and science of that case and this one are the same.

  • Letting your kid eat only french fries and chips is some 5 star parenting.

  • The worst part of the story is that the boy faced the malnutrition being so young and growing. If he was an adult then he would have more chances to recover. But facing a coenzyme deficiency at so young age when one is supposed to grow will have deteriorating and persistent effects on health.

  • 10 years of this?! His parents should have been arrested. Potatoes are not a complete protein alone. Should have added beans and corn!

  • man - ARFID needs to be diagnosed and treated properly. I have it, and due to incredible care from my fiance we've managed to graduate me to eating varied spring vegetable salads with spinach and chard and stuff. I could barely eat romaine lettuce a few years ago. I can eat candied pecans and sunflower seeds too, if we mix them with other things. ARFID isn't a laughing matter - it's not just picky eating - but it's also not untreatable. You

  • I also presented to the emergency room with optic neuritis, but I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. He's correct that doctors need to run different tests to find the right cause and not just assume it's nutrition.

  • Admittedly, this is scary. For four years or so, my diet was limited and fish and chips was what I mostly ate as a kid. I was a picky eater (although it was labeled as “picky eating” instead of ARFID). I grew out of this at 13 and now I do eat a much more varied diet but the fact this could have been me is frightening.
