I have a funny story for today's video! I was sitting at Denny's about to eat my breakfast, and I had my tablet with me. I was about to throw my headphones in and turn on your video, when an old trucker guy tapped me on the shoulder and asked "Hey! Is that Diesel Creek?" I told him yeah it was, and he asked "You mind if I watch it with you?" I scootched over so he could move his breakfast over to my table, and propped up my tablet to watch. After the video was done, we polished off our coffee and chatted a bit, then he got up and paid for my breakfast without me knowing lol. So, the moral of this story: Thanks Matt! For the video and the free breakfast! 🥞🥞🥞
It also teaches people to be polite and friendly to everyone! 😂

Thanks for showing us and I love to watch. I am 84 years old and when I was 15 and 16 I worked with Allis Chambers at the Fair in Knoxville, TN for 3 weeks using and learning about their large EQUIP and showing others all about it. All that was fun and a great experience for me getting my life started off in the right direction, and learning how to work hard. Before I had always worked all the time with my Dad, and knew how to assist on the job. today in 1.11.24. All be safe.

Turbo bolts would've been a good rest for kroil. I bought some, boy that stuff is EXPENSIVE!!!

Sometimes, like now, I rewatch these vids just to hear the theme music by the SSV's again. It just cheers me up, gives me hope and says everything is going to be fine. I ABSOLUTELY love it.
Matt, You took me back to when I was a kid in high school in the mid 70’s watching you drive your D8. I was a laborer working for a small construction company out of Wamego KS during my summers operating a (-] backhoe meaning a shovel 😉😉😉 doing my part putting in the drainage pipe for a large number of farm ponds. The company I worked for had a D8 that I’d get a chance to see operating every now and then while I working and I always envied the driver with all that power in his hands in that giant machine and the sound of that diesel and turbo were awe inspiring... Thanks for your efforts of bring old machines back to life and taking old guys like me back to our younger days. I’m now a retired pharmacist but I remember those days working in the dirt with fond memories...

I admit your recommendations are effective, because Shell Rotella with zinc will be the first oil I will look at for my meager vintage autos when i retire and have enough time to resurrect them.😂

I watched the restoration too, that was so fascinating. "these parts are unobtanium" and they just had the old hardware sat in their inventory. it was so cool!
I watched part of the turbo rebuild last night.
Watched it yesterday. It was very interesting. I was surprised with the final repair price given what they had to do to get it back in working order.

Our baby daughter was born last saturday. I am so happy to tell you she can sleep fine on my lap while the newly rebuilt turbo whistles through my speakers :) Great job Matt!
Matt I was lucky to see the turbo rebuild by Area Diesel first before watching your video, it just all flowed together. Great work mate.
Crescent wrenches, a good set of pliers, a good set of vise grips, a hammer, and profanity are my favorite tools. Sometimes just cussing at the thing puts the fear of God in it and it gives up and comes loose... Yeah that never happens but it's better than me throwing the wrench! Keep up the great work man.
I would say that Wright makes some really great tools.
My grandfather said a crescent. pliers . hammer. and bailing wire he could fix any tractor

Dear Diesel Creek. I was 7 years old in 1964. So, I was then playing with sandbox toys when that sturdy D8 was built. You sir have a big kids' dream machine. So glad to see it running. I imagine the fuel pickup got another slug of yuck. Recommend siphon off anything at the bottom of the fuel tank. Mud or water perhaps moved around when on the hillside. Enjoy that big boy's toy. Wish I could see it sometime. Thanks for sharing. David.
I have a lot of fond memories about the D8. My dad was a service manager for a CAT dealer and got to run this when I was 14. In the mid 60's I was able to help with cleaning land for new lake with instruction not to worry about small to mid size trees.
My Grandfather had one he used to knock down trees to enlarge his fields. It sat more than it was used, so us grandkids played on it a lot. But what was left of the paint on it was red, for some reason.
Keep an eye on your new turbo bolts. Cat uses special (and expensive) high temp bolts for that application because regular bolts expand and contract too much and can either become loose or snap.
All we ever used at the shop was CAT grade 8 bolts and nuts ! But yes if you Ofer special they are a little lighter in color from the regular bolts & nuts !

The world might have not been the best back in the old times but they made their machines pretty and good
they were too busy building the world and machines to worry about peoples opinons or who sleeps with who.
World has fallen apart and now most of the machines suck.😢

Sure, your political beliefs may be a bit more popular, and some stuff may be a bit cheaper (keep in mind you'd be earning 10 times less as well, and probably even less than that), but you'd also lose ALL creature comforts. I find it impossible to believe that anyone would ACTUALLY like to go back in time 50 years. For a few days to experience it, sure, but to live in permanently? Absolutely not.

Good morning from Vancouver BC, Matt. I watched the first half of Area Diesel's video. Thanks to Curtis for posting this thorough video and the problems encountered rebuilding a old D8 turbo. It was lucky they had another core or it would have been very disappointing results. Especially, the housing on yours was corroded thin around the head entrance meaning the scrap bin. I think you are the first guy to undertake such a project on KZhead. That Machine appears to be in pretty good shape, which in itself is rare.
Matt have you ever thought of a hot diesel fuel flush of the oils system? This is what the local Alice Chalmers dealership would do on the old tractors that has set in barns for years in a non running condition. They would drain the oil, and install a fitting on the oil plug and a hose with a shut off valve, and had a tank of about 25 gallons of Diesel fuel with with a oil flush additive, and they would heat the diesel fuel to 200 degrees and fill the engine with the diesel fuel and circulate the cleaner for 1 hour, and then they would shut off the fill valve drain all the diesel back into the bulk storage tank for the engine flusher. This was a shop built engine flusher which used 2 electric circulation pumps salvaged out of an old boiler system, and the heater was a steam heater that heated the diesel fuel. When they disassemble an old engine to be rebuild the inside the engine was sludge free . Mat you might want to build . Also the bulk tank has 2 or 3 sediment tanks that, so it was clean engine flush, for the most part.

@@DieselCreek You also can run the engine without the turbo to warm the oil before draining. All you have to do is cap the oil supply line to the turbo and fire it up.

A general rule for acceptable oil pressure is 10psi for every 1000 rpm.

Matt, they came up with an idea for finding the center of a hole you need to drill. You take a rubber stopper like you would use to temporarly plug a hose, cut an x or + on it and then use a stamp pad to ink it. When you put it in the hole and press it to the surface, it leaves a mark for the center of the hole!
Bringing these relics back to life is awesome to watch, keep 'em coming. Your commentary is great too!
ADS is really great people ..and they quickly get your gear back to you..the id tag is just the small details but they always try to make it a personal job ..one of the many reasons i like ADS..not to mention they never fail to fix the broken bits.

Really would have liked to see you vacuum out the intake manifold after seeing the gasket debris & rust drop in as you removed it Matt.
Stuff a rag in the intake manifold before scraping and please wear rubber gloves when dealing with old oil - that stuff is toxic
It was the Exhaust manifold gasket.
@@hiscifi2986 The exhaust is what spins up the turbo. It still passes through even though it doesn't enter the engine.
So happy these historic machines get a new lease of life for the younger generations to see. Great content as always ❤
I know 'Starvaggi Industries' - they were based out of Weirton, WV when I was young in the 1960's. I think Mr. Starvaggi came over from Italy decades before, and opened a coal and ice business, along with other businesses. I cannot remember the name of the business, but I remember the many green large dump trucks around (I think the business name was 'Starvaggi Coal and Ice' or something like this at the time). But they ran the buses in the City, and were an important part of the history of Weirton. There is a Starvaggi public pool in Weirton that opened around 1970 and is still there today. Mr. Starvaggi was a hard worker and an entrepreneur, and was well known in Weirton back in those days. His first name may have been Mike if I remember correctly. My guess is this bulldozer may have worked with coal in its early days, and at the city dump towards the end of its life just due to its location - just a guess.
That dozer needs to be in a movie.! It is awesome.!
It's far easier to wear shades while using a torch than carrying a white cane later on in life, I've known a few who were brave and regretted it
You could always make your own extension to remove the drain plugs by using an old no.8 bolt with the same size head as the socket and then weld another nut on the other end of the threaded section. That way you don't have to worry about losing that nice old wrench or cramming it up into the belly pan and the handle getting in the way.

I think the angriest we've seen Matt get was the brush mower videos. All the loose hardware and no oil in the gearbox got him a little heated.

Those old CATERPILLARS are absolutely unstoppable beasts I gotta find me a massive old D9 for my construction business it reminds me of the killdozer movie 1974 I think came out, I remember seeing it on here. It plows into some type of radioactive rock or it kills the operator then it gets a complete mind of its own destroying the crews things and basically the whole crew on the island.

I just watched the turbo rebuild on area diesel's channel! Expensive process, but seem like honest people and they do good work. Actually refreshing to see a company put prices out there like that, very helpful for the rest of us. Can't wait to see how the doser turns out!

We had that very same d8 cat in Vietnam 4 of them that were abused in the rock quarries. Seabees. We drained the oil on the ground. Made for nice blacktop after done a few times My knees are now gone from jumping off heavy equipment. Both d8 and ts24 Euclid Glad to see ur doing that restoration as it would never get done at my age of 77 also all our filters of the day were sock filters

To pick up a 45 gallon drum with forks, set your forks just wide enough to go outside the drum raise up to the rim. The rim holds the drum.

I would love to see an actual scientific test done to determine the "hot vs cold" oil back and forth. I have heard it argued both ways by two engine rebuilders hanging out in one of their shops after hours, both made excellent arguing points. The major take away, hot or cold depends on how long the engine has been sitting without running. An engine that has been sitting along ass time, just drain the oil cold because that is when the most amount of oil and sediment is at the bottom. It is always a factor of time and what you intend to do with the engine. A real old engine with an unknown change interval, change the oil and filter cold, run the new oil until it gets nice and hot then change the oil and filter a second time.
Greetings from Central NH Lakes Region - I watched the Area Diesel Services rebuild of the turbo - that was awesome. Those guys are incredible. I would highly recommend spending the time to watch that ADS video if you are all interested in seeing how true professionals rehab a piece of obsolete machinery and bring it back to life.

That was one fantastic video Curtis made on rebuilding the turbo. A phenomenal amount of work went into it. Hope your fuel problem isn't anything major or too time consuming.
Is that a different Curtis to Kurtis of CEE Australia who rebuilt a D8 blade?, if so, you need to check out his video, I was knackered just watching the non-stop cutting, grinding and the welding...., and then more welding.... C&C, CEE, Dirt Perfect and Diesel Creek are the best channels on You Tube for getting it done! Thanks, Matt, for this one, an old school D8 hard at work is one of the best sounds in the world.

I love that ADS recorded the repair and that you included the link. I feel more attached to the entire process now. I wish I had gotten into machines instead of computers and carpentry. I feel it's a bit late to start over, again, now in my late 40's. Now I can't remember what I did 5 minutes ago a lot of the time, so learning is a buttload more difficult. 🤣 I'm sure you've inspired a few folks into pursuing getting into machines and repair. Keep on using those crescent wrenches, your use is pretty exactly what they were made for as you explained. Let the complainers complain. Thank you for breathing a bit of life back into old forgotten machines others gave up on. I find that really satisfying to do and watch. Cheers.
