  • You’re absolutely right about fly fishing becoming about catching so many fish in a day and how big they are, using methods that are no different from spinning lures. It’s taking a lot of the pleasure out of it. I go to a fishery in Scotland which is very good, with a friendly crowd and a lovely setting, but the owner posts on FB every day saying X landed 27 and Y landed 31. That’s not what it’s about.

    • I am so annoyed with my self for missing your comment. Sorry. Its a shame that it is this way. So many channels promote bigger numbers, and the key word is loads. I can be guilty of a bit of this at times myself. To find ways of connecting with these people on KZhead. The numbers game is making it difficult for fishery managers, as they have to keep pushing stock levels up all the time. But there is a down side in doing this. Every water has its level of how many fish. As you push these levels natural food becomes short, water becomes poor and fish will suffer. So much to loose and so little to gain. Great to hear from you. But remember the fishery manager is in a difficult spot. Fish have to come out to go in. The longer they are in the more difficult they are to catch. Then people will not turn up. Grin and bare my friend. Shaun.

Its the price of everything means I have to do a bit more, when I should be taking it easy. Get this batch of work out of the way. Then its back to a bit of fishing. Have been fishing, will never stop, can't. But just do a little more. Great to hear from you mate. Take care. Shaun.

  • Second time around commenting here Shaun but I’m needing to share some thoughts based upon my angling experiences in the last 48 hours. Two days ago, I was fortunate enough to bump into Charles Jardine at my local water. It was a most delightful experience! “You don’t need expensive tackle to fish, the fish don’t care. And, it’s not about how many fish you catch, it’s about the overall experience” were just amongst a few of the snippets he made in passing. I watched him from an opposite bank on the lake, he didn’t rush to tackle up, just sitting to observe the surroundings, he cast (beautifully) whilst sitting on the bank. He spent more time sitting and being with nature than actually fishing! I don’t believe he caught a single fish in those few hours? I didn’t but wasn’t bothered that day. I will never forget it! I was so made up! 😊Then today at my local (the same) water I observed two anglers’ behaviour which have had the completely opposite effect upon me and completely wound me up! Really winding me up! The venue has an 8 fish catch n release rule, with up to 2 to be killed. I watched the two anglers in a boat today catch and release at least 20-30 fish each!!! Then later discovered one had already taken 6 fish from the bank!!! Under normal circumstances I would have had a moan to myself and moved on. But when you know the two anglers are very senior employees of a very well known angling manufacturer based in the U.K. - we both use some of their tackle, then I’m completely flabbergasted and enraged at their behaviour, given they get to travel the world and fish some of the best places most of us can only dream of! In my mind they should be ambassadors of the sport and set an example to others?! Not blatantly ignore and break a venue’s rules! So yeah, an interesting few days in my angling world. Anyway apologies for a moan, but thought I would share Charles’ comments with you as their aligned to yours in this video. Oh, I believe the welsh Stillwater team fished said venue yesterday, including a well known welsh KZheadr (his dad was/is in welsh team 😉) like yourself. All the best Shaun! J

    • OMG You are so lucky. Charles Jardine. I was only talking of him the other day. Yes he knows his stuff. I bet he cringes to see what is happening to our sport / pass time. May be this is where I get my ways. I have so much time for him and people like him. Just like me, I am always first to arrive at the water and last to put a line in. In my early days it was all about Charles Jardine. Watching him on the chalk streams. Amazing. Its a bit like then and now. The sad thing is there is so much of the now. I think the competitive edge is taken over. 5 today 6 tomorrow. I have done the competitive side of fishing long ago. The fish were stocked for us and it was full on. I did well. But I did not enjoy it at all. There was nothing about this as to why I fish. I have recently realised what I have been saying in my videos. To help you catch more fish. Its that word more. So now its, to help you catch a fish. Another thing about a video and some people seem to forget, is that we can make things look so simple and easy. We edit to what we want you to see and believe. And at times it appears as thou we are hooking fish after fish. Sometimes we may if they are stock fish. But for all that start out today will be driven by numbers. I have only this evening subscribed to a channel purely on the back of him saying that its not about numbers. I have pointed out to this channel that this is why I have subscribed. The thing is when a creator finds a way or a word that can gain views or subscribers. They will use it for that reason, whether they believe it or not. And the two you have mentioned would be kick off our water and told never return. Regardless of who they are. Oh I don't mind you mentioning Rhys. I was talking with him very recently at our water Garnffrwd. Funny thing he was trying to convince me the only way is bung and egg. I think Charles would think the same as me. Great to hear of this and a massive thank you. Take care mate. Shaun.

  • Without doubt the best video you’ve done to date Shaun! 💯 The intro needs to be on loop! Well I keep listening to it anyway. Since returning to the sport 30 years on I’ve been overwhelmed with everything tbh. Up at my local water I hear of boys taking their bag limit in just a few hours…mind you that’s usually on the bung, which…I’m trying to avoid as I’m not into coarse/float fishing!!! I blanked on 5 consecutive visits and was about to quit, knocking my confidence, then I reminded myself why I’ve taken up the sport again? Fresh air, escape from day to day life, be with nature and have a casual chat from time to time. As long as I get some knocks I’m happy, with the occasional fish to net. This video inspired me to dig out one of the many fly fishing books I inherited off my grandfather - Modern Techniques of Still Water Fly Fishing by Geoffrey Bucknall, 1st published in 1966. It’s like medicine to read 😂. If I’m too get after the wild browns in remote locations in the future I’m gonna need this video and that book to reinforce why I’m doing it! The real reasons! Not how big, how far, how quick etc etc. Can I make one request please mate? Make sure you always have the machine’s laugh in the soundtrack!!! Cracks me up every-time I hear his laugh and makes up for how many more fish he catches than me! All the best Shaun! I fancy getting over to Hays castle later this year, it’s only 1.5 hrs away. Cheers! Jonathan

    • You have just described fishing at its best, and what its all about. Honestly you would fit in with us boys a treat. You have the wright attitude and there is nothing wrong with your approach. A little tweaking with time will fix many things. The bung is no big deal. I may cover this in a video one day. How to present a fly like the bung on the straight line. win win. The bung just presents the fly, sorry egg or blob, at a certain depth and maintains that depth. Waiting for the fish to swim along. This can be done on the straight line. Problem people have is there lack of confidence in fishing a short tippet. Floating line straight onto 3' tippet. Bingo. I have done one foot and proved it works. there are two videos on here. Second one being the best. To be honest most people would blank it. I have studied fish for years. Fish are comfortable in there own environment and whats around them. They do not like sudden movement on the bank or a sudden surprise on the surface. You present a floating fly line on the surface, leave it settle a moment. The fish will be fine. The best part of the fishing for me is the hit. Bung fishing eliminates this. Fly tying is a massive part of it all. Flies that actually work for the fish and not the fisherman. And I am talking real fish not stock. It will be great to meet you at Hayscastle. You will love it. And will never want to leave. This water is geared up for the fisherman, and the fish are top draw. Not easy mind. Love your comment. Take care mate. Shaun.

  • Hi shaun. Ive been fishing for 55 years. More than half of those years I fish 100 days a year. You briefly mentioned fish what give you confidence. I think that might have been your greatest tip. You and I both know you could tie a cigarete butt to a fly and catch a marlin out of the toilet. But as a beginner you wont understand this because you dont have any confidence. But as you go farther down the road you newbees will get some. Hang on to it, and trust it. Think like a fish. And impart life to your flies, and fish them like they would a t if alive. Damsels swim very slowly. So fish them slowly. You can take a wollybugger and fish it like a baby fish. You can change how you play it and make it look like a crawdad. Or the same thing to look like a Dragonfly nymph. Or a wounded or dying fish. All this with the same bug and your control of hiw you make it act accordingly.. Bake to you Shaun. Tha ks for all your hard work. Look me up if you ever come to Denver

    • 55 years fishing and it shows when I read your comment. You like me did not have all this tec stuff back in our day, we had to read the water. And by trial and error. We have a connection with the water from doing this. And this was obvious from reading your comment. Watching so many today that stand on the banks edge, cast out and drag in, they may speed up a bit just to make a change. They may never have that connection with the fly as we do. Easy said, harder done. Oh I would love a trip out your way. But in my world its a dream. Thank you so much for the comment. Take care mate. Shaun.

  • I feel for someone new to fly fishing a basic understanding of entomology is a good idea, an understanding of how aquatic insects naturally move in the water being able to observe adult insects (if the buzzers flying around you are about a size 14 it's a good place to start) having said that fishing a damsel in the winter when there are no adult damsels may seem to counter this for a person new to fly fishing, so understanding of the changing seasons and the life cycle of the entomology.

    @johnbelcher7955@johnbelcher7955 Жыл бұрын
    • Unreal. I was picked up about the damsel recently. And what was said is so true. Why do we call it a damsel, when it looks nothing like a damsel. So there may well be your answer. I have presented patterns that look as good as the real thing. Especially buzzers as this is my go to in fishing. The fish are very slow with them. Did read an article long time ago. They believed it better to give it a tweak, to make it stand out from the crowd. mm makes you think. Mind I do think some tweaks are a bit extreme today. Great comment John. Take care mate. Shaun.

Justin is 7lb all the way. Justin and myself will fish any unweighted pattern and up to a three fly cast. Steve still puts a weighted fly on the point. I will often fish a 20+ tippet on the method I demonstrated in this video. During the video I used about 10' as most people will use 10'. But the advantage for longer tippet is massive. Ye I am doing well mate. Mind trying really hard to find a better balance in my life. Got so many hobbies. Dropping a few. But really enjoy my motor Bikes. Steve and myself just had 7 days at Garnffrwd. In all that time I think it was 4 may be 5 used for the whole time there. A lot of this is down to not the pattern, but presentation. • Hi Des so sorry I thought I had answered all comments and I even remember reading yours. That tippet did not work out so well. It failed on knot strength. But we have found that the middle market stuff is as good as the top end. And if somebody purchases the more expensive tippet based on 00.4, then I think that's crazy. Fish can still see it. A well presented tippet is one with a load of muck on it. Reduce the glare. Sorry again Des. Take care. Shaun.

    • Sorry it been so long to reply, I did miss it. Yes myself and a few of the boys have converted. And will never go back to a 7#. Mind I do have a 7# I use all the time when on the intermediate. Its my Loomis IMX. Its lighter than a lot of 6# rods. Basically its more down to the tecno built into the rods today. We have been in the worst of storms with the 6# rods and never a problem. Given the chance of getting onto a casting pond, whether you bye or not. Its worth having a go. The last time I held a mid range 7# rod in my hand was last week. It felt like a heavy stick. I have had mid range all my life. {Oh I do mean mid range as per price not action}. But now I have a bit more money and thought why not. I don't catch any more fish. But they are a treat to use.

    • During this video I was on my Loomis Asquith 6#. I have spent all my life on 7# rods. Not a problem. Then I started on the more modern 6#. I will never go back. I still use a 7#, which is again a Loomis. The IMX, which again is amazing. It is far lighter than any 7# I have ever picked up. And that's a lot of rods. But this rod is specifically for the intermediate lines. Now if you are looking for a new rod I would strongly advise you try before you bye. We are lucky, as we have a lot of rods between us, so we can use a rod before committing. Sometimes I will travel hrs from my home to a shop with casting pool. There are plenty out there will recommend a rod due to them being sponsored. But not all rods suites every body. Example. Dia on our water purchased a sage, not sure of which one, but it was not cheap. He hates it. It does not suite his casting style. A bit like you have had that car for years, and you drive it so smoothly. But then one day you need to hire a car. For some people they can drive that car for most of the day, and they still have what they call kangaroo petrol. They can not get used to the difference in brake or clutch. For a few can get to the entrance of the hire company and have it sorted. Bit long winded. but I hope you get my point. Its important not to throw your money away. Get to know all those on the water with nice rods. Then you can have a go. But the more you can try the better. Justin has just picked up a really nice 6# Sage LL. Could be my next one. All I will say is. Look more towards mid to mid fast tip. This is the direction we are going. Fast tip is fine if your reactions are faster, and you consider your self a more than good caster. And they are good in windy conditions. But there are greater downs than ups when it comes to actually fishing. If it a casting rod you want fine. A fishing rod go down. Hope this helps. But I think the action is probably most important, before brand. Good luck with it. Shaun.
