    • I watche the first episode... afterwards Because it had been somewhat a while: I rewatched the first 3 Eps of ATLA og. The comparison was JARRING. Aang and Katara were also Child Voice Actors. Yet their performances let alone Zuko, Iroh, Sokka, And Zhao in first 3 eps. were so well done. And it is the same time. Probably less. ITs og Intro is so condensed and efficient in setting up world and stakes. The way it starts not Grand but in the middle of nowhere in the southpole with 2 peasent kids who had to grow up too fast because of the war. By chance or say Destiny stumble on the missing avatar.

Comparison to the original however (since that's what they're adapting from) seems fair to me. Think of it liking comparing two paintings of a mountain. You wouldn't judge them based on how their interpretation differs, but on the quality of the piece overall. That's at least my thoughts on it (sorry for length lmao)

It's like saying women can essentially only be pure sweethearts or cruel dictators. Basically, either be incorruptible or you're evil. Even the nicest characters in the original had moments of embarrassment or regret.

It also messes his timeline in a way that will make it harder to explain how and why he learned from other cultures and joined the white lotus (if the white lotus will even be in this show...) It also changes a lot of the dynamic of the relationship between zuko and iroh. In the original their relationship is more tense in the first book. You can tell zuko respects his uncle as a bender, yet he also calls him lazy and has the failure of the siege of ba sing se in mind... I get that Iroh had to escape from capture. But to be so cruel in his language when escaping is crazy. So unlike Iroh at all. While its important they acknowledge his history with violence, he was no longer that man by the time we meet him in the show. Also the number of ppl coming out the woodworks talking about “that’s a good change to his character & shows that Ozai is an abusive manipulative genius to both his kids & give him more depth” No Ozai was not a “manipulative genius” he didn’t try to play Azula & Zuko against each other, he hated Zuko b/c Zuko was too “weak” to him compared to his sister. Also the fact that they had Zuko fight Ozai during their Agni Kai had me PISSED the whole point of that was Zuko choosing to not fight his father AT ALL & Ozai still burning his face then banishing him for being “a coward”. Having Zuko fight Ozai & win then having Ozai burn him for “showing compassion/not being ruthless enough” takes away from the brutality of the situation and makes it seem more like Ozai lost his temper/got his pride hurt and lashed out instead of just him harming his son for no reason even after he surrendered

    • Seriously. Ozai was clearly a great strategist and he was focused on the WAR he was waging and on his legacy. He was a conqueror, not a sneaky emotional manipulator. At the risk of sounding a bit sexist, this is what women specialize in (think Regina George in Mean Girls - this is toxic femininity). Not saying that a man can't do it, of course some can. But Ozai was clearly an ultra masculine type of a ruler, focused on conquest, not little games within his family. And yes, that fight was stupid as hell. When I saw the scene in the cartoon I was blown away. It was one of the best scenes i've seen in animation (even though I already knew about Zuko's past from YT videos). I hated in the live action but I was curious how my sister would feel about it (she hadn't seen the cartoon and didn't know anything about it). She said it was meh. She was disappointed because she expected the mystery of Zuko's past to be something... stronger? More emotional, maybe (not sure how to translate it from my native language)? She even said it was a wet fart after all that mystery build up.

He hated him because Ursa said she wished Zuko was not his son, to which he promised Ursa he would treat Zuko as she wanted: As not his son. That's where it started. Part of Zuko's stunted growth was the fact that Ozai began mistreating him, so him being ''too weak'' was ironically a result of Ozai's own actions.

  • Most people have talked to death about the characters (and how poorly they were written) so I just wanna get into some of the lore re-writes that I thought were pretty stupid: That Sokka and Katara can go into the spirit world with Aang defeats the purpose of The Avatar being the bridge between the human world and the spirit world. In ATLA Iroh was considered a legend for having ever been approached by a spirit as a mere mortal. And even in Legend of Korra, the only way it was possible for non-spiritual beings to enter the spirit world was through spirit portals. So this is such an unnecessary retcon that takes away from the mystique of the spirit world, and also kind of nerfs Aang as the Avatar as well. Similarly, the shrines being the only way he can communicate with past Avatars also undermines a huge part of his arc. As someone who is very young and reluctant to take upon such a huge responsibility, being able to communicate with his past lives for guidance was an important part of his journey. While they had him communicate a lot with past lives in this show it didn't make sense how they did it. Most of the time it was to get yelled at. And they featured Kyoshi way too much. I always thought, in the original, his main guide was Roku because he was literally the most recent Avatar before Aang. When he spoke to others like Kyoshi, Kuruk, and Yangchen, they felt a bit distant-emotionally- and it makes sense because they are also distant in terms of their place in the cycle. On top of that, there was something powerful about Roku feeling responsibility for not stopping the war, the same way Aang does. Learning how to accept responsibility, and overcome his guilt so that he can grow into the Avatar he needs to be, is another core aspect of his journey. No other Avatar could relate to that as well as Roku, because no other Avatar was alive during the 100 Year War. And finally; I saw no need in incorporating Book 2 episodes into the first season. While you might argue they're on a time crunch, the overall run time of Season 1 live action, is the same, if a bit longer, than Book 1 of the original animated series. They have less episodes, sure, but they have more time per episode. They could still have cut out episodes like The Great Divide or the Storm and still have made out with enough time to tell the original story. Some people defend these decisions as if the directors/writers were held at gunpoint to make them this way, and if that's the case, then we still don't need to defend those decisions. We need to criticize whatever producer/studio/investor thought it would be a good idea to adapt such a beloved IP, knowing full well they were going to change core aspects of it, only to deliver a poorer, unsatisfying rendition.

Roku being Aang's main Avatar guide does soften the image of the Fire Nation, even just a little bit, simply because he's Fire Nation but he's also a good person. So even if it feels like nitpicking. I feel little changes like this definitely affected the live action in a bad way. I love Kyoshi. But honestly they could have made the whole live action about the Kyoshi novels ans I feel it would've done a lot better. Or something along those lines to Aang in Book 3, when Aang is distressed over having damn near died, which would've lost them the war. Them featuring Kyoshi way more and making her the literal meme overly violent angry Kyoshi was not even funny. Pure cringe fanservice. ATLA was Roku's story as much as it was Aang's. All of Aang's biggest enemies bear Sozin's blood. His greatest ally in the end is a descendent of both Sozin and Roku. Them removing Roku almost entirely is garbage. Anything for the girlbossing I guess. Also, LOL at Kyoshi taking over Aang's body and transporting him elsewhere physically, and doing it without his consent after loudly berating and insulting him no less. • I cannot get behind the story change of making Zuko fight back against his father in the Agni Kai. Not fighting was the reason he got banished. It showed his care for his father, how he wanted to please him and ultimately just gain back his favor. Later on he AGAIN chooses not to fight Ozai during the eclipse saying that the Avatar’s job. These were very important parts to his character’s story line. His struggle with good and bad. Also having Zuko been invited to the war meeting instead of Iroh letting him tag along removes depth and responsibility Iroh felt for Zuko getting injured in the first place. Another change I really hate is how Kiyoshi is getting after Aang for “abandoning the world”. They know what goes on when Aang is in the Avatar state. It’s also not a powerful weapon! In Ba Sing Se, when the general or whoever told Aang that he only needed to go into the Avatar state and use it as a weapon, Aang shut that down. It wasn’t the goal Team Avatar had. • Really good point. My father loves excellent storytelling such as what ATLA offers and would undoubtedly love the original, especially the character of Iroh, but he's 61 and isn't interested because of the medium, that being animation. I still hope to convince him one day. Maybe we'll watch it together. I've already warned him away from the live action. It just shows that getting someone to watch it because it's a different style doesn't dictate quality, at all. And that's coming from someone who generally doesn't like animated series either. I'm just open to watching them.

  • What’s scary is that the writers need to learn their mistakes and fix them NOW. Since they’re filming and writing seasons 2&3 at the same time, they don’t have any extra time after the release of season 2 take in audience feedback and improve for the next. Everything will be set in stone already so they can’t change something if the audience isn’t happy with the direction of season 2. The show runners sounded so confident that they truly did a job to satisfy fans. And it’s obvious that it didn’t happen with a lot of us.

Not every villain has to be totally sympathetic. Ozai was fine being a heartless monster. Ozai being a monster made Zuko, Azula, and even Aang more interesting characters. Zuko literally tells Aang to kill Ozai in Book 3, even attacking him to drive in the message. How is Zuko going to do that in LA?

    • @@justinstewart9145 "My own mother, thought I was a monster. She was right of course, but it still hurt." No, Azula was just fucking bad. Ever since she was a child she's been sadistic and brilliant. That's literally the definition of being an evil genius. She didn't break down because she was a poor wittle baby with an abusive father, she broke because her control began slipping away more and more, starting with Mai and Ty Lee betraying her, then she kept failing to defeat Zuko and capture Aang, and her paranoia began to take root and fester as she was finally given true power. Azula was ALWAYS just as evil as Ozai, and she was NOT "abused". She and Ozai are just straight up fucking evil. Azula was probably the only one Ozai actually loved, because she's basically just like him. So as a result she was constantly praised, she was given the most important tasks, he gave her the fire nation to rule despite how young she is. Ozai was SO confident in Azula's absolute skill he allowed her to sit in his decoy throne room as insurance because he knew even if she couldn't bend a single ember, she was still far too smart and martially skilled to lose to even the fucking avatar. She had the Dai Li, but it's not like they're a magical win button plus an ultimate shield. We saw how that whole scene played out, even powerless Azula was in complete control of everything. We feel bad for Azula when she breaks fully because we're humans with empathy and we watched this like 13ish year old girl who always wins take critical losses for the first time in her life that chips away at her perfection until the final blow shatters her completely. That's how GOOD Avatar is as a show, we don't feel bad for Azula because she could've been good, she's evil to her fucking core, we feel bad because of how brilliantly they portrayed her downfall. Azula's life was fucking perfect, there was never a singular HINT that Azula was under constant pressure to be perfect and if she stepped a single foot out of line Ozai would set her feet on fire to get her back in line. That was ZUKO! Azula just WAS perfect, she was the ideal child and Ozai made it pretty fucking clear how much he liked Azula over Zuko. ZUKO is the one who was abused and beaten down, literally getting burned because he spoke out of turn. Azula, btw, was full of GLEE watching half of Zuko's face being burnt off. Can't fucking teach that shit. When you live your whole life in such perfect control of everyone and everything around you, seeing your control slipping time after time will start to chip away at you until you feel like you can't control ANYTHING anymore. Mai and Ty Lee betraying Azula was the biggest hit to that sense of control, and losing to Katara was the final nail in the coffin.

  • In regards to the child actors, and the acting in general, if all the acting is lackluster, it's usually a directing problem more than an acting problem. (and in this show, it's probably also a script problem.) The young actors have less experience in overcoming bad directing and bad scripting, where an older actor might be able to manage it. But even that's not always the case. So with the sum total of the wonkiness in the acting, I think it's more of a directing problem (coupled with that awful script).

Night movie: EXPOSITION DUMB!!!! WHY? SHOW, DON'T FREAKING TELL, IDIOTS!!! Also, I got some beef with Iroh character as well. Iroh is practically humorless. You removed one of his complexities that being baddass under the farce of self-defecating humor. It hit WAY harder when the show got to his baddass moment. They TOTALLY butchered the Iroh capture sequence. The goal of this supposed abduction was for Iroh to stray Zuko away from pursuing Aang. That's why he let himself to be captured and the show was smart to slowly show how he managed to leave trace for Zuko to find him. Also, when Zuko rescued Iroh, Iroh was about to be executed, the dialogue just gave me the true bond between those 2: "Excellent form, Prince Zuko!!" "You taught me well, uncle." That's all I need to know. No need for the long ass flashback to know how close those 2 are. Just 2 lines and I already knew. Also, when Iroh was rescued, he never firebended once. He just use bruteforce or redirection to KO his opponents. It showed how he never overly relied on his bending all the time.

To add, why did they make him an idiot, instead of an innocent boy who just wants to live a normal childhood? No Netflix, Aang leaving the temple in the OG show was to show that he didn't want to accept his duty as the Avatar, hence why he ran away. I don't know why the writers thought taking away defining traits of the main characters was a good idea. Yes, Sokka was sexist but the point of him being sexist was that he was able to learn and grow with a new worldview. He was the man of the Southern Water tribe, it was his job to protect the people there. Of course he was going to think men were better than women! Why did they make Katara not motherly? She was a very strong person and her motherly-ness contributed to it. Why are the characters lambasting a literal 12 year old for basically not stopping a WAR? He's freaking 12! I haven't watched the live action but from these clips you've shown, I doubt this actress can pull Azula off. She doesn't... reflect? Azula's "ruthless perfection". I personally think we need to step back from volumes and calibrate them to only be used for reflections. Basically the backgrounds look flat and you can tell, but you can't quite tell why you can tell. There's a mismatch between how the light behaves for the actors and the way the light behaves within the virtual space. We're loosing so much when dealing with the restrictions virtual volumes create. I don't think those will be solved so easily because rendering a virtual volume is expensive and it doesn't fully accomplish what it says it accomplishes, which is tying the actor into the scene.

We see it change color briefly but she didn’t just straight up shoot blue flames. I’m kinda disappointed we got to see her using lightning bending before seeing her Blue firebending skills in action.

  • The show didn't actually have any greenscreen, at any point. They had one of the CGI stages that first came up in the mandalorian, which costs upwards of $100 million. Meaning the shows budget was actually 1/3rd of what was advertised and explains why the environment backgrounds look whack

I know people are very strong with the fact that aang isn’t *really* flying…but he kind of is. In the show he had to be on top of a mini tornado that was connected to the ground, or on top of an air scooter that is still making contact with the ground, or the avatar state. He can jump really high, but that’s not flying, that’s just being light. Imo he’s flying. How do you think he got to the top of that air temple without the glider anyway? I can only let this slide because it happens in the first episode.

We know as a child she had regular fire, she was just really good at it. In the show, they don’t tell us when she got the blue flames, just that they had them. With no mention of Sozin’s Comet and there for sure being a time skip, she could show up with her signature blue flames at the beginning of book 2, just like she did in the show. ……… I’m trying to have hope for the show here😅

Also, Zuko not fighting back in the cartoon shows the mercilessness of Ozai and how that contrasts with Zuko. In the live action, a younger and much less experienced Zuko almost beats the final boss of the whole world and series.

  • The blurry background is because of the cgi. A lot of the shooting was done in those new cgi ready studios. You can tell by the lighting (super white and coming from everywhere) and all the walking-while-talking scenes. It s also super costly (explains the high budget of 150millions for book1) yet makes all environnements just worse than outdoor shootings. It boils down both to the inexperience of the directors and the limitations of working with kids (easier to shoot in studio than outdoor when tou have limits on working hours and don t want to deal with weather...)

I’m sorry but I’m not excusing these “child actors”. They did not GIVE. Child prodigies exist. There’s no excuse. I see child prodigy dancers all the time eating up dance choreography. It’s the artist job to turn “shit” into magic. They should’ve use a couple of their MILLIONS 💰 to actually hire TALENTED KIDS, instead of hiring kids who simply “look the part”. That’s all this live-action does, “look like Avatar “, but that’s literally it. All of the money went into the CGI and the talent suffered and it’s awfully OBVIOUS………

Aang breaks the rule of "show dont tell" in every scene, Katara is not even the same person but whatever you go "master" girl, Hakoda doesnt deserve this, no water bending in the water book, Zuko has no redemption arc because he is already the character you cheer for the most because he is not really a villain at this point, team avatar and zuko pretty much dont meet at all, Sokka and Zuki just have... moments? that make me feel like Im watching a teen movie instead of two warriors and their becoming, they remove the speech from katara in the intro but gran gran says it anyways... I just feel like they dont understand the show or like many other adaptations, they didnt watch it and they just see some scenes like a checklist of things fans like and HAVE to keep and the other scenes they can remove and get creative with

Its blurred because when shot incorrectly and in close-ups or medium shots it CAN look really really bad if cinematographers dont know how to properly shoot on it. • The worst offence in all of this is they break the most important writing rule, every, single, scene. “SHOW DONT TELL”, it’s hammered into every single writing advice thingy-ma-ging ever!!! Also zuko’s scar, is offensively bad. I have a burn scar and his live action scar is so bad that it pisses me off every time I see it, it doesn’t even look like a burn scar. Not only did they nerf it by half the size, but it’s the least-scarred looking scar I’ve ever seen in my life, how can they put so much care and effects into the beautiful backgrounds yet so little into his scar? He was burnt by the most powerful fire bender! The burn would’ve torn away flesh, stiffen skin to-almost rock, and leave a heavy texture, yet it does none of that! (Although the texture is there, it’s extremely miniscule and doesn’t show up half the time! Burn scars are finally shown on someone who’s not just a 1dimensional villain, zuko, a character who admittedly starts as a villain but then gets the greatest development arc ever, earning a title of a hero. And then they get the scar offensively wrong. Honestly, it wouldn’t suprise me if they removed toph’s blindness at this point, considering how little they care about the disabled. And even if they don’t remove it, they’ll find some way to screw it up and be ableist with her character, I bet it.
