When Life Falls Apart, Does it Actually Fall Into Place? | A Buddhist Story

When we’re hanging onto a root that’s chewed away by mice with a hungry snake below and an even hungrier tiger above us, what can we possibly do to get out of this situation? What is the best course of action when there seems to be no way out? When life falls apart, we might want to remember that everything changes all the time. Like night turns into day, bad fortune turns into good fortune, and a curse turns into a blessing. So, could it be that, eventually, life doesn’t fall apart but... into place?
This video is based on a Buddhist story, that I originally heard from a Buddhist monk named Ajahn Brahm. You can find the original dhamma talk here: • What to do when everyt...

  • I'm 35 and I'm starting my life over again this year. Lost my job, lost my spouse... it's been very hard for me, I am alone and it seems like I have no way out of my present circumstances. I know I'm not the only person struggling in the world. I try to be grateful every day, for the simple things. I have thought to myself at times, "my life is falling apart"... but maybe it's actually coming together. The future can surprise us. Thanks for the vid, it was helpful. :) October 4th, 2022 edit: Thank you everyone for your responses, your kind words and supportive comments. I am truly touched, and grateful.

    • @@VV-cj5wc Hey, thanks for reaching out. To answer the question, I'm surviving. I still experience difficulty, there are good days and there are bad days. It sounds like maybe you are looking for some feedback about your life situation. Obviously I don't know your circumstances, so I can't really give any specific advice. (Also, broadly speaking, I’m not sure that I’m qualified to be giving anyone advice about anything, so take what I have to say with a grain of salt.) I do think that there are some general “best practices” that can (probably) help anyone. 1.) I think you have to try your best to be grateful for the good things. I’m not saying that you have to fake being happy about the bad things in life. “Oh, I’m so happy that I’m going broke, and my spouse is kicking me out of the house!” (etc, etc.) Obviously that would be insane. I just mean, did you eat today? That’s a good thing. Do you have shelter from the elements? That’s a good thing. Do you have a pet that keeps you company? That’s a good thing. Just try to be grateful for that. I know it can be really hard when you’re depressed or anxious, to see the good things. I think it’s important to try and acknowledge the good things, even if they’re small/minor. I think genuine gratitude can go a long way to protecting your mind from the chronic effects of depression, anxiety, etc. 2.) Be kind, patient, gentle with yourself, especially when it comes to making change. It’s been my experience that change can take a long time. It’s hard to change. It’s a marathon, not a sprint; beating yourself up along the way isn’t going to help. Honour your own journey, honour the fact that you’ve come this far, in spite of all the difficulties. 3.) This kind of ties into #2, but: do your best to stop comparing yourself to other people. It’s a trap, one that can be very hard to get out of… but in the long run, you’ll be so much better off when you stop setting unrealistic/unfair expectations for yourself, based on what other people have/are/do/etc. Their journey is their journey, not yours, and vice-versa. All of this is not like a light switch; I think it takes daily work, re-investment, to really add up to something. I’m not perfect. I struggle with these things daily; I am trying to change. I really hope this all helps, somehow.

    • That is true, but it the nature of man to go beyond what is expected and what he deserves. Man pushes himself past his limit to ensure a better future for himself and his loved ones. Animals in nature don't plan more than a winter in advance, but we humans do. I can't blame people for doing that. It's the reason why humans are the most powerful animals on the planet. But for those not enamoured by power and pride, like me, it seems pretty pointless.

  • I’ve listened to this several times. My tendency is to completely fold when I’ve been used, abused, and thrown away because of childhood trauma. This made me remember the time my ex decided not to send my children back to me for my week of Christmas. We had kept things open because of his constantly changing work schedule. But with narcissists that was the wrong thing to do. I was in a deep depression because I had taken off the week and had plans but as usual he killed then. My husband kept trying to cheer me up. Instead I was in a ball on the bed crying. He finally gently but firmly said that I could continue crying over a situation that wouldn’t change or I could get up and get ready and he’d take me to a movie. It hit me that the time would pass either way. The first scenario I’d be exhausted and sad going back to work after the week. The second I could try to make the best of it. Going through a heartbreak with my adult daughter now because she chooses to be the same way as her dad. I want to roll into a ball, but I know that I’ll be ok if I just keep moving forward and concentrating on what is going right in my life. I’m pretty easy to please. Trying to please someone who is bottomless is so draining and what I have had to remind myself is completely pointless.

I almost died in a horrible car accident. My recovery was and is long, I lost my job, car, income, house, etc... I lost many people who I thought were friends. There was a point I even felt I would lose my sanity over it all. But during the hardest time of recovery, I realized so much about myself. I forgave myself and others for pains I dragged with me every day. I just had to breath and ask myself, what is the universe trying to show me and day by day I went with that feeling. Life is all about perspective.

In hindsight, I remember the direct relevance of the story to what was happening in my life then - the 'unexpected' short stay at the monastery ended up being the sweet honey that I chose to take amidst the craziness of highly uncontrollable circumstances around that time in my life. I have since been able to share this story in this wonderful video format that you have created and made available at the click of a finger. I, myself, just come back to this from time to time as a gentle reminder that life is ever-changing - and ACTUALLY, ALWAYS falls into place:). Lol, until it falls back out. BUT then the cycle continues:)...characterising the exhilarating ride that is life. Thank you so much for posting and creating such beauty 🙏💖

Had I had lots of friends and not been abused by my family I would stay here forever and never move anywhere or even considering leaving. • I always go back to an interview with reggae artist Bob Marley from time where he explained that when he was piss poor, he never saw it as being poor. He even goes as far to say that he never once felt like he suffered and it was all state of mind. This is coming from a mind who grew up in one of the poorest areas in Jamaica. He had no family, no support, nothing. Can only imagine the level of consciouness you have to be at, to come to a conclusion like that at a young age.

  • Life at time changes, ebbs and flows, but no matter how desperate the situation, as long you draw breath, you can still live and still fight. I love that you mentioned Albert Camus, I adore him as a philosopher.
