In This video I feature FOUR shop upgrades. Learn how to build drawers and do a few DIY projects. the best of which, in my opinion, is making drawers with no metal hardware. The others range from: a craft paper tower, a few vertical partitions, and some overhead storage featuring my shop made French cleat Brackets. Which can be found at

  • I first saw a similar drawer slide elsewhere. It is a bit simpler without the side channel just a slat the drawer slides on, that was during the covid. Now I want to add them with multiple drawers under the rolling table saw cart I made back then. Your solution is perfect to keep the drawers from hanging down along with the “nylon webbing” to hold them in. However, I am planning to use melamine strips so the slides go easier. I really like the creative curves on your shelf supports which has given me some ideas for winter projects. Thx.

  • Great design. I really like your shelving. On one occasion when I moved house I made a stack of 24 boxes for packing hand tools and workshop stuff. I made the boxes with a French cleat on the back, so that they could easily be made into cupboards for the workshop. It worked well, but then I got seriously ill and unable to work full time. I moved to Turkey and hope to set up another home workshop this year.

  • I need to do a bunch of upgrades to my little shop. Because it's so small (9x13 feet), every inch of space counts, I need to think about how to organize everything really carefully. I've had some ideas on how to improve it, but I've neglected getting them done. I think once the holiday season is over, I will spend more time and effort on building some stands for tools, parts storage, and so on. This video has gotten me thinking about some things. Thanks, Chris. 👍

I will be add a LOT of drawers to my shop and don’t want to buy that many quality slides so going to either do what you did or I might just use UHMW either tape or 1/8” or 3/16”. • Interesting upgrades. On the subject of children, you get unlimited joy from your children. I hope your father is still with you and if he is then sit down with him and ask him to explain the joy of having grandchildren. You are older and have more time to appreciate them. You also have learnt how valuable they are, whether they be your grand children or any one else's. To explain a bit, I have the honour of putting on the red suit in December for our local Special Education Unit and have done so for over 20 years. I think that I receive more joy from doing this than the kids do. If we don't protect all children then we have no future. Thanks. Terry from Australia.

  • These are great cheap drawer slides and I like your drawer stop ideas. One improvement to the stops would be to attach the strap to the bottom of the back of your counter supports rather than the face. This would allow the staples to point upwards which would be perpendicular to the force you’re applying to them when you tug on the drawers. They should stay in longer that way. Again I love the idea and I have plenty of extra straps to do this with!

    @allensteindavid@allensteindavid2 жыл бұрын
  • To help you with the drawer hardware cut your strips that go on the drawer (obviously if you have the room in the back) 2 or 3 inches longer than the drawer, and let it hang out the back. This will help with pulling them out to far and gives extra support to the drawer when it has weight in them.

  • Hey bro, on your drawer glides, very cool design and solves a problem for my next set of drawers! Thanks, and well done! A tip I've used a lot for the gliding surface of other drawer glides I've designed is to make it harder and slicker with melamine. Rip a 3/4" strip of melamine from the sheet, the length of your drawer bracket pieces. Now rotate that over on its cut side, and bring the rip fence toward the blade, so you can shave off that layer of melamine plus 1/16" of the MDF with it. Now glue/clamp that to your first strip with which you made the drawer bracket, then attach the first strip and assemble the rest as you did. What you're left with is a drawer bracket with a very tough, slick, durable surface for the cleat part on the drawer to ride on. No wax needed, and feels as slick as a store-bought one. Of course, they make an iron-on melamine edge tape, or even iron-on oak edging would be pretty slick and tough, compared with the plywood strips rubbing each other. But this is a very cheap alternative affordable for most people, and doesn't take that long to make, especially if you batch them out. You could also just glue and brad nail the entire melamine strip to the assembly (without shaving off the plastic layer), but I'm kinda leery of how strong a 3/4" strip of that MDF would be with the drawer's weight resting on it. Plus shaving them off and gluing them to plywood, you can shave off both surfaces and get 2 strips of plastic for every strip of melamine ripped from the sheet (I know, that's just too cheap! ) :)

  • 👍👍 Use the drawer slides as sides for your drawers as they are about to same height as a drawer saving yourself some material and saving a step in fabrication

  • Another excellent episode! The drawer segment was especially useful. I did something similar for my router table using hardwood and it works as well as Knape and Vogt slides for small drawers. Another option for shop furniture finishes: I sand and finish with WBPU, Oil based PU or brush-on lacquer and the pieces look nice but I wouldn't call them fine furniture finishes. After trying WBPU, it's my least favorite of the 3 mentioned. Oil based PU and lacquer are both much harder. Bench tools tend to stick to the WBPU finished bench top.
