I'm literally 16. I do not own a house, and my family is not even considering a loft conversion. I have a GCSE tomorrow. I'm lost in the never ending tunnel of useless KZhead. Please help me.

in older houses with windows by existing staircase, the loft stairs may often cut across the existing staircase/landing window leaving a triangle effect above the stair stringer, it can also be blocked leaving a thin gap between stair stringer and wall.

How do you tell if the floor joists are suitable for a loft conversion, or need replacing?
There are some basic visual checks if you can get to them - checking for woodworm / infestation / damp or rot is the first thing to look for. Once you've established the joists are in good condition, you'd need to speak to a structural engineer or loft conversion company about how suitable they would be for your plans.

On average in the uk the value added is about 25 k on value of your house esp if huge double bedroom with en suite is the conversion
Thanks for watching James. The value added varies by area, so we always advise to convert for your needs rather than any potential profit. That way nobody is disappointed!
How are house attics structured that are built in 2008?
Each house type and location is different so you'll need to speak to a builder and check you have sufficient head height for conversion.

I have a budget of £10k for a 1bed loft conversion.. stairscase and 1 sky light....question is it possible?
With insulation, flooring, building regulations sign off and electrics this is a bit tight. You should be able to do a very basic conversion for £15k. Thanks for watching.

In older 1930's houses quite often the loft staircase over the existing staircase cut across existing staircase/landing windows.
There are all sorts of staircase straight, half, quarter, winding, spiral.
What’s the difference between a loft and an attic because that space looks like an attic not a loft?
They're the same thing in our books!
Adding those steel beems @ 2:08 is like $40k lol. Seriously, depending on the size and amount. Rental of cranes alone is going to cost half of that amount.

hang on, if you're adding a bathroom surely that needs planning permission as you are affecting the waste of a building...plus "average" loft conversions start at around 30 grand!
Thanks very much for watching. You don't need planning permission to add a bathroom to a loft. The planning rules only apply if you're significantly altering the shape of the roof, otherwise it's counted as permitted development. Costs vary across the UK so all prices given are approximate.
issue we have is our house is a Stewat Milne Timber Frame house. What can i do with this?
You should still be able to convert the loft. We'd recommend you contact Stewart Milne direct as they may have advice on conversions and how to deal with the timber trusses.

You guys have got to be kidding. When was this video made? Average increase is maximum 15% on a 1 bed conversion ... no way 20% is the lowest average in the country. Most people are lucky to get around 9%.
