A special combat vehicle with an appearance similar to the BTR-87 armored personnel carrier was seen on one of Russia's highways and attracted great attention from the media. The BTR-87 armored personnel carrier is one of Russia's most regretful weapons projects. Developed as a private project, it is an improved version of the BTR-82A with some modifications. The BTR-87 is not approved by the Russian Army because it currently operates the BTR-82A APCs, and it is believed to be mainly for export.
The BTR-87 was first introduced at the Army 2018 international military-technical forum. Developed based on the proven BTR-80 and BTR-82A armored personnel carriers, with its troop compartment relocated to the rear, while the frontally mounted engine provides additional ballistic protection.

  • BTR 82a still lacks a rear hatch. The BTR 82au has a rear hatch and the BTR 87 incorporates the latest developments with a rear hatch. Squad safe dismounting and entry has been an ongoing issue for the BTR 82 series for a long time until the BTR 82au and the BTR 87 which are still new. They will not replace their predecessors for some time to come as the numbers of 82 and 82a currently in service are considerable and the vehicle conversion may not be worth the price as new concepts are being introduced.

  • BTR-80/82A maybe very cramped but has good stability, Indonesia tested BTR-4 from Ukraine with the same configuration as BTR-87, its performed very poor at amphibious test, that's why Indonesia marine corps only bought limeted number of BTR-4. Maybe Russia should let go the amphibious feature and focus on protection and fire power.

  • BTR-87 must be protected from a minimum of 12.7mm cal. from all sides!!! And that means it should be level 4 armor according to Stanag. I don't know exactly which armor it is according to the Soviet measurement unit!!! They need to thicken the protection a bit!!!

    • That's my own thinking, too! But . . . in the right terrain and situation, you might not have to worry about a 12.7 opening up on you from short range, as from 50 meters off a jungle path. From far enough away, thinner armor will be adequate. Sensors matter a lot! Magnetic Resonance Scan Imaging, Land Sonar Wave, Millimeter-Wave Radar, Low Infrared Image Concentration, Forward-Looking High Infrared, even Magnetic or Gravitic Interferometer! Anything to warn you, and then countermeasures: spall lining, slat armor, spaced armor, ablative armor, reactive armor (NOT good for vehicles working around friendly infantry!), Soft Kill jamming, Hard Kill Active Protection Systems. But yes, if you ask yourself, "What if I built a carbine cross between a Bren gun and an Owen submachine gun, chambered for .500 S&W Magnum modified to throw 12.7mm machine gun armor-piercing bullets . . . what would that do? Would it work?"
