Is the Nissan Qashqai still the British mummy's car of choice; New Nissan Qashqai Review & Road Test

Back in 2007, the Nissan Qashqai was a ground breaking SUV project for Nissan. By version two they had sold more than five million Qashqai's. Now there’s a new model out, version four, with a couple of important updates, but will the British Mummys car of choice live up to its reputation?
The 2022 Qashqai gets a redesigned front-end with a larger, and more prominent V-shaped grille, some sexy 20-inch alloys on range-topping models, while creased bodywork and sharp new LED headlights for all trims have also been added to the mix.
Inside, the cabin, which used to be a rather dull, has been revamped too. There’s an impressive modern infotainment set-up with two screens, one 12-inch driver’s cluster and one 9-inch touchscreen in the middle. Most importantly, there’s plenty of space up front and lots of room in the back for the passengers. The doors open nice and wide as well, 85 degrees to be exact, so getting in and out is really easy and loading a child seat is simplicity itself. The boot is fairly large at 504L, thats about seven carry on suitcases in old money, not bad for a practical, well-rounded family car. You can choose from two four cylinder 1.3-litre petrol engines with either 140hp or 156hp, both of which have mild-hybrid assistance. If you go for the latter, you have the option of an automatic CVT gearbox and optional four-wheel drive, but the default is a six-speed manual gearbox. In the future there will be a 187hp electric hybrid model that uses the engine to power a generator that produces the propulsion.
Safety has always been a big deal for Nissan, and the new Qashqai continues that trend. The hi-tech ProPilot safety tech is available here and one key feature is Navi-link, which is an advanced type of autonomous cruise control that can slow the car to a stop and move away again in busy motorway traffic. That said, it’s worth highlighting that Navi-link is only available on CVT-equipped models. Autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and blind spot assist are included as standard across the range, while manual cars get a basic adaptive cruise control set up right out of the box.
The new Qashqai is comfortable over bumps with nice light steering and good visibility, which makes it really easy to drive round town and to park. All in all, the new Qashqai is a big improvement over the previous model, however, its not dramatically different, but a good deal of small changes combine to make this an even better car than before. It costs from around £25,000, which is average money when it comes to family SUVs.

  • Hi AJ I just bought a 68 plate Qashqai - 1.3 Accenta Premium 140 hp Metalic Red - what a fabulous car !! Two advantages to the parcel shelf are - it keeps things in the boot well hidden and improves the interior noise levels that bit quieter . Having had a 2004 and a 2008 Ford Focus over the last 17 years which were great cars the Qashqai is just so comfortable and refined with perky responsive engine and good handling and steering ( but obviously not the steering and handling of Focus ) but very easy to live with .

  • The main benefit of having a parcel shelf, is to stop prying eyes looking into your boot space. That is why all hatchbacks and Estates, have them as well. I do prefer the pull-out covers, as they don't get in the way; if you aren't using it. It is nice though that Nissan have made the split level boot space, so that you can at least hide the parcel shelf under the split floor. Really good review. Thank you.

  • I think the main purpose of the parcel self is to hide items in the boot from nasty people.

  • Parcel shelf! I almost guarantee if you have the car long enough, you will brake one of the ruddy strings with the end attachment that fits into a rounded hole which holds the shelf up. Car manual? Forget it, you start reading up on something it then says "also refer to page so and so" which in turn probably tells you to refer to yet another page for me, one of the upmost wind ups! We started off with the entry level model back in October 2014, we got the Tekna in 2017, in 2020 we got the Tekna T158 with the DCT gearbox. This was my wife's very first automatic and she loves it. No, I'm not a rich man, my wife is disabled and we get our car on the Motability scheme. The Qashqai is hugely popular with Motability customers for obvious reasons. First time on your website but I must say, I do like your no nonsense style, it is somewhat refreshing. Stay safe now

  • My wife has a 2016 top of the range, can't remember the name of it but it has the bells etc. Automatic dip headlights, heated seats, all view camera with self parking. For driving its the balls. Would love if land rover offered even just half the equipment. on the evoque, we could downgrade

  • I hate having to go on-line for information - especially when trying to decide which vehicle to buy - much better to have printed manuals and brochures. When trying to sort out the computer systems in a car it is much easier if you can sit in the car with the instructions in your hand.

  • So my opinion rear seats dont fold flat. All the suspension arms front back wishbones rot out sfter 10 years. Clutches poor and earth issues. They are good cars but not great for the money. I just spent 1500 on mine as it was cheaper to repaire than change out.

  • Ford just unveiled Explorer SUV EV! Any knobs? Not to operate the car! Seems they only employ them to design them! Ford used to own LandRover and it seems they didn't learn anything! Time NCAP removed points for not being able to operate the vehicle while wearing gloves! Can you tell I really prefer knobs and buttons?
