Chess Board With Drawers - DIY WoodWorking .

I made a custom chess board using pine bearers - offcuts etc .
All the cuts / mitres had to be clean & accurate , to allow for a clean finish.
I used a quality spray gloss varnish to complete the project which complimented the cedar stain & pine finish.

  • This is a beautifully designed and crafted piece. I just watched a similar project from a regular far eastern woodworking site poster, and though their ideas and designs are excellent, there is no comparison in the finished project.They don't finish any of their projects, and all the joints and nail holes are clearly visible, whereas yours are not, producing a far more asthetically pleasing and professional result. The contrasting splines and corner drawer supports are a wonderful extra touch, as are the way you've matched the grains on the squares. You also use far better quality wood, and I'd rather pay that bit extra than look at one of their projects and be continually disappointed with the 2nd rate finish. EXCELLENT!

    • Cheers ! Ray , thanks for the in depth analogy, you certainly do have a great eye for detail ( grains on the squares)..... would you believe most of the wood (pine) was waste offcuts , to be thrown in the wood bin !!

  • The thing that got me into woodworking was my desire to build a chess board, and I started off with the same exact tools. So many content creators act like (or outright say) you can't possibly make anything decent without the best tools/materials. You had a goal, set out to do it and worked with what you had and you made a piece that easily rivals others made with far more expensive tools/materials. I respect the fact that you didn't let your tools or available materials limit your imagination. A true craftsman. Seriously, great job, it's a piece that will surely be appreciated for generations :)

  • I’ve watched many chess board builds over the years and only now came across yours. Easily the best. And the main reason, aside from your craftsmanship? The quality of the product from construction pine! Just about every woodworking magazine, youtube video, tv show, etc. pushes the narrative that we must use expensive or exotic hardwoods. Nonsense! You could teach them all a valuable lesson. Beautiful work. Thanks for sharing with us.

A big hug from Brazil.

  • I have a question about the finish - a layer of varnish makes the wood shiny, but also plasticy. It's exactly what I don't like. I like the feel and smell of the smooth, dusty wood after a sanding. If you leave it that way indoors for many years, does the environment do a number on it or will it stay nice and wood coloured?

    @mbpm6135@mbpm613510 ай бұрын
    • Thanks. ...the only materials I had at the time were pine offcuts a aerosol can of varnish & a small tin of cedar stain . The chess board is always indoors at room temperature & not quite 2 years old . The varnish has given the board a slight tinge of yellow ''that's expected with pine '' . I didn't have the luxury of using a material such as Oak, Maple or a Walnut , if so then yes , I would have invested in a quality low sheen oil with rag . In regards to the shiny/plasticy feel , that's a matter of personal preference I guess. In finishing can I say...I always use a 100% natural food safe oil, where food storage items are involved as in my last 2 projects. I value your opinion & question(s) that is why I've tried to give you an honest in depth answer...cheers my friend .

  • Hi Wally, I'm using this video as a guide for my year 12 woodworking project. Is there any chance you know how much wood you need to make this board, or do you have any dimensions for the pieces you cut for the board?

    @Bonerstone@Bonerstone2 ай бұрын
    • Hi , I apologise for my late reply 🙏 .... ok firstly after cutting 64 small squares @ 56mm X 56mm I sat (glued) them on a base ''plyboard'' ...I then added a 1inch frame on the outside ply/small squares ..... the basic dimensions are the the start 0:05 .....I don't have specific plans/dimensions , again I wing/improvise as I go along with most of my projects ,,,, again sorry for my late reply my friend 🙏
