Is Batman Arkham City Still That Good?

The legacy left behind by Batman Arkham City, first released in October of 2011 is one of a true lightning-in-a-bottle sequel. One that takes a foundation people liked and produced a sequel so good that it makes the original look like a prototype. A game that received near-perfect scores across the board, sold millions of copies, and netted dozens of awards for the best game of the year. So the main question with this video I want to explore is this: Is Arkham City still that good? Is the game still the near-perfect score masterpiece it was back in 2011, now that the superhero action genre has taken so much inspiration from this game? Well…let’s find out!

  • Mr Freeze fight also has the most drastic changes according to the difficulty. If you play on easy or normal, Oracle will send you data that shows different types of takedowns to defeat Freeze. On Hard, that isn't available and Freeze gets more health. And on Hard+, Freeze gets even more health and he will shut down your detective mode if you use it for more than 8 seconds

When I got the game on Xbox-one a few years later, I played on hard mode for the first time & was confused as to why the list didn't show up. • I love that Arkham City's world is very small and compact, but very (content) dense, that to me is the best open world/level design. I hate vast, almost empty, no-level design open worlds that take forever to traverse and quests/missions/the story makes you go from one side of the giant map to the other.

  • As someone who bought this game way back then when it was fresh & new, I have to say: it was an absolute delight! Batman Arkham City had it all. The gameplay, story, acting, replay value, & optional content. Not only did it cement itself as the best superhero game of all time for me and a lot of people, but it cemented itself as one of the best games of that generation period! And that says a lot when going up against games like Skyrim, Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto 4, Bioshock, and many others! There's just something about this and Asylum that's truly magical.

  • One thing that always fascinated me about this game was you can see a plot line be actively abandoned: In the base game you can hear some of Joker’s goons talk about a “new addition to the family coming” and examining Jokers base will find a positive pregnancy test clearly indicating Harley is pregnant with Joker’s child. This implication is furthered if you beat the game on New Game+. As during the credits you’ll hear Harley sing “hush little baby don’t say a word, mama is going to murder for you the whole damn world”. However, in the DLC “Harley Quinn’s Revenge” examining that room again shows multiple negative pregnancy tests indicating Harley either had a miscarriage or a false positive. What’s espically interesting is Paul Dini wrote the base game but he didn’t write the DLC or any subsequent Arkham games. It makes me wonder, did the devs abandon the Harley pregnancy plotline because they knew Dini wouldn’t be back for the third game? Or did Dini refuse to return because the DLC threw away the plot thread he established?

    • @@TheShankPimpnot only they flopped the threads, the story itself was also miles worse than City and Asylum. More recently however people have gone back to this game and have praised it for its great story and amazing performances and it has in my opinion the second best story in the series with the first being Arkham City. • I'm glad you acknowledged the remasters being arguably inferior to the originals. Most people and video essayists seem to take them for granted as a modern, convenient way to access the games. Then they'll go on to critique whether or not the graphics still hold up, saying things like "Batman's face looks derpy in Asylum" even though it's purely the remaster being botched. The remasters paint the games in a more negative light than they deserve, when in reality they hold up incredibly well as they are. It saddens me that most people getting introduced to the series now are going to experience the "remastered" edition. As a side note, I think the fact that Return to Arkham never came out on PC speaks to the developer/publisher actually being aware that the remaster doesn't compare to the original, maxed out, PC versions.

Huge variety and innovation, great production value but short time between announcements and release dates, and only a couple of years between one release and the next in the series. There was also less trouble with studio greed, such as the micro-transactions and milking of titles for years with online play that plague the market today.

  • Just recently replayed this game when the $4 sale for the Return to Arkham bundle was put on the PS marketplace, and I even decided to go for 100%. A lot of positive things to say about it: The combat still holds up and is very simple with enough different enemy types to keep me engaged, the Riddler trophies were not nearly as bad to get as I once thought, and the map is very easy to navigate. On this go-around, I managed to find a good majority of the Riddler trophies without having to look up a guide. The ONLY negative thing I can really say about this game is that the traversal feels significantly slower than Arkham Knight's, which I'd say isn't even a fair critique because it's an older game on older hardware, the map is much smaller, and the traversal did not feel slow to me when it originally came out. Arkham City gets a 10/10 from me, and that's not an easy score to get.

  • I still like Asylum more. It's far more atmospheric and has a comic book feel that Arkham City has much less of ir doesn't have at all. Also Batman got noticeably weaker in City, which I didn't like, despite the people he was beating up in City also looking weaker than before. It took longer to take down normal goons than in Asylum for whatever reason. Luckily they made him stronger again in Knight. It's still a great game but IMO - Asylum was better. To be clear - I didn't play any of Arkham games as a kid and discovered the trilogy just a year ago and played one after another, so nostalgia doesn't cloud my judgement about this, Asylum just seems like a better game. P.S. about the explosive gel mechanic you praise in this video - I was actually really annoyed how they removed the automatic explosion upon detection of enemies, as I used that all the time in the first game. Story-wise, it makes no sense for Batman to get rid of this incredibly useful technology.

  • Small correction, quickfire gadgets were in Asylum, but because of the limited gadget pool and quickfire gadgets not really being used in gameplay that much in Asylum, people don't even bother to use them. I'm pretty the tutorial pop-up for the quickfire batclaw doesn't even appear in the maingame and only appears when you start a combat challenge.

  • I still stand by my theory that the Arkham games mirror the Dark Knight Trilogy Asylum/BB - Perfect introduction to a series, introduces the feel, environment and darkness of the world and sets things up perfectly for the future City/TDK - Blockbuster entry, best of the series by a country mile, elevates everything from the 1st entry to an entirely new level Knight/Rises - Slightly disappointing ending, villain in a mask who knows who Batman is, ends with the “death” of the Batman

  • Good video, I'm still playing through the game. One thing I will say though is I don't think we see eye-to-eye when it comes to remasters. Sure, there are some that aren't as good as they could've been, some that are meh and some that are just bad. But then there are others that keep up what made the original releases great and ones that actually improve the games. Like yeah, there are some that are unnecessary, especially if it's on a system where the older versions of the games were backward compatible anyway. But I just feel like these games on PS4 and Xbox One were fine remasters. A better example of remasters done right is Portal The Companion Collection on Switch. I didn't think they'd actually give the games 60fps on Switch, but they did. They aren't games that are extremely demanding or anything, but I've seen games that could easily have worked with improvements on Switch, but just didn't. Anyway, I think remasters are fine, as long as they're done right and I feel like a lot of hard-core fans of certain games make mountains out of molehills when it comes to most problems with remasters.

I never played them or seen someone play them but I still had the feeling that Arkham City was way bigger.

  • I LOVED the design of this game. I mean that, its not the ultra photo realism you see in mordern games but that biting edge of the comics. Look how stupidly large Bane is, or the goofy perportions of Joker, or the fact they even have clayface, don't even get me started on how the world looks. its got such comic accuracy its just stunningly gorgeous. Not to mention they made a great redesign of Robin, I like the addition of giving Tim a hood, the armored Tee, boots and gauntlets while making his bo staff turn into a baton or shield? genius. While i loved some aspects of the batmobile in knight and had some fun playing it up until the cloud burst boss (never again), city still is the best of the trilogy.

  • City is hands down the best Arkham game of the series, the best Batman game overall and one of the greatest games ever made. It does everything so perfectly on how an Batman game would be and it does it so well. Even if the likes Origins or Knight does do some improvements from City's gameplay mechanics, it also sacrifices other things that City did it so well. Whether if the games were twice as big and nothing going on that felt like an waste of time, having unnecessary gimmick that felt exhausted or not cooperate the right amount of flow in many design choices. City just does all of them perfectly and it's the one game I never get sicked and tired of playing over & over again because it's that fun.

  • 23:00 Another disturbing thing about Strange. He got the Mad Hatter to essentially make up his mind control drugs he uses in the TIGER guards, who are actually just abandoned Arkham Asylum patients, and Quincy Sharp. He even had a hypnotic suggestion put into Sharp that when he was going to be questioned about Stranges involvement he had a vision if Strange telling him to kill himself. Sharp even saw him as his master and gladly gave up his free will for what he believed as influence that was worth it.

  • Playing through it again right now. With this playthrough I've noticed a few annoying intracities... holding the run button vs hitting the grapel button aren't very smooth. Enemies in large groups attack at various speeds and if there's a few with guns it can be annoying, if you take them out first they pick the weapon back up with frustrating speed. It's still a great game. Top 5 easy.

  • I'm in the middle of a new playthrough of Arkham Asylum and: - You can use the Batclaw to make knife guys fall over and knock them out that way. - It's not the most satisfying, but you can try to run away and put an explosive gel on the ground to stun enemies. - It was by accident, but I managed to use the smoke bomb so it's in the first game.

  • Having just replayed all the Arkham games, I feel that City is good, and definitely a good sequel, but Arkham Knight is better. The gliding is better and faster, the combat and predator maps are more fluid, the graphics are phenomenal, even for todays standards. The only negative is the bat tank, but you can also roam the world in the other batmobiles, like 89, Nolan's, OG Arkham batmobile, the 60s batmobile, and even the BvS batmobile. You can also play as more characters than ever: Batman, Nightwing, Robin, Batgirl, Azrael, Catwoman, Red Hood/Arkham Knight, even Harley Quinn! Absolutely incredible.

  • Arkham City was the first game in the series that I played and it was one of those games from my youth that I played the ever living hell out of. No joke, this was my favorite game of all time until God of War (2018) came along, I loved it that much. I love just how versatile Batman is and just how useful his techniques and gadgets are this go around. Yeah the Riddler stuff was WAY too bloated and Hugo Strange doesn't get too much time to shine in the campaign, but everything else about the game from the combat, stealth, traversal, and world exploration is so good that I can excuse any problems I may have with it. All these years later and I still have so much fun and never get sick of playing with it. 18:56 Oh if you think the Batman Beyond suit looks cursed in 3D in this game just wait until Knight comes along.

  • I wish I played these games in order, I started with knight so when I went back to asylum it felt so simple and lacking. For example when you couldn’t counter during a ground takedown. And then the way you had to unlock a lot of core mechanics of Arkham knight in asylum through the Wayne tech. This also applies to city. So if anyone is reading this and wants to play the games. PLAY ASYLUM FIRST!!!
