Is Russia on the verge of economic collapse? | Jeff Sonnenfeld

2022 ж. 31 Шіл.

"The myth of Putin as the world's energies tsar is running out of gas."
Putin can't pivot east to sell oil and gas and is eating into his reserves to finance the war, which will create "a very tough time in Russia" in the coming months, says Jeff Sonnenfeld.

  • Another point, that Peter Zeihan makes and few seem to realize, is that Russia's oil fields are in far-away, isolated and challenging places. It takes sophisticated engineering to keep them going. You can't temporarily suspend the oil flow from these wells. Once they are shut down, they are destroyed. Last time this happened, it took thirty years to restart. Oh, and by the way, the only firms with this kind of expertise are Schlumberger, Halliburton, etc. vg. Western companies. Putin is playing a game of chicken.

  • Purely anecdotal, but I do contract work for a small US tech company that also contracts 6 software engineers from Belarus. At this point, due to the war, 5 of them have left to other countries (mostly Western Europe) and don’t plan on returning. Certainly a loss for Belarus. They’re all really smart, fairly young, and capable people. If it’s that bad for Belarus I can’t even imagine what the “brain drain” on Russia is like right now.

  • Considering they had $620 billion in reserves before the war, $320 of which is frozen due to sanctions, they are left with $300 billion. Some estimates say they have a budget deficit of $10-20 billion per month. Averaging on $15 billion, it would mean they have 20 months of war. So starting from 2024, they will be forced either to end the war, or start even more drastic measures to gain more money (high taxes, stealing property and business, forced labor, or no payment for the army). But even without money, they could mobilize and throw infantry with AK-47, but with this tactic they will run out of people before conquering all of Ukraine.

  • Very good analysis - Europe can switch to LNG and redistribute it across the EU. The LNG ships are western and even Russia needed to book them if they wanted to export elsewhere. The other thing is, that many houses in Europe can be still heated by several means. My neighbours are piling up wood and some of them are switching to Airpumps. The other ongoing discussion is to cap energy pricing in Europe to keep energy affordable, but still encourage people to change their energy consumption - in fact this speeds up the EU's plans for gas and oil independence. Yeah, it might appear to be a controversial discussion, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
