India's Honour Killings: When Love Becomes a Crime | Witness | Marriage Murder Violence Documentary

Every year in India, at least a thousand young people are murdered by their own families for falling in love with the wrong person. For these lovers, who shun arranged marriages for love matches, there is only one resource to which they can turn: the love commandos.
This volunteer organisation is run out of a small room in a congested inner-city Delhi neighbourhood. They have no budget or formal structure - just a stong desire to modernise their country and end the honour killings.
Sapna is 23 and in love with Mazhar, a Muslim student. When her father, a rich Hindu, found out, decided she needed to be punished. She has been beaten, kidnapped, forcibly married and set on fire. Dozens of times, she’s nearly died. She’s lived in the Love Commandos refuge in Delhi for the past four months. It’s too risky for her to leave the shelter but she says she feels happy for the first time and is waiting for her marriage to be dissolve so that she can marry Mazhar.
Bhaskar and Pooja and Kartik and Ashia are also on the run from their families. We follow these three couples over several months and tell their stories. A surprising look at modern India.

    • Not true. We do not believe interracial marriage is sinful. It have different reasons. But killing Person is great sin for us too. Marrying in a different race or religion is not always easy to adjust and sometimes even risky. Many families scared. Marrying someone from another race does not always make the marriage happy and successful.

Love is a construction, a process, it can happen between any 2 people, the idea that is necessary a deep passion or love at first sight to have a love relationship is an idealistic romantic western notion, but it doesn't work for many people as well. The notion that you need to in love to the person that you're marrying is a recent cultural phenomenon, most marriages in history were not basely solely on love, including in ancient Greece and Rome.

For me, tjey never loved their kids in the first place and see them as a way to get money and nothing else. Can these young people, flee the country and look for asylum in another country? This documentary was obviously made a long time ago but things haven't changed enough for there to be any hope for the youth in India on the future.

  • It’s a stupid system that denies humanity. Why worry about what or who someone is. Regardless people that love each other will always find a way to be together unless they are dead. Secondly killing or taking a life that God himself has disapproved is wrong . We need to cherish our differences as it’s what makes our humanity complete.

People hurt others everyday in the US and get off like it's nothing, and it's vile to people living in other countries. I know some Americans like to deny that fact, but it doesn't make any less true. ALL countries in this world has its social problems. And no, there is no misinterpretation or misunderstanding going on over here, so don't waste your time with capital letters and exclamation marks.

    • IF you are really a Christian you'd respect God's Word ''Do not be unevenly yoked'' you cannot marry a non believer. Ask him to talk to a good pastor, a solid Christian, many muslims are turning to The Lord Jesus. God said ''the two become one'' you cannot be one with a man who is not saved. Jesus told Nicodemus ''You must be born again to enter heaven''. Jesus doesn't lie, you're marrying someone that you know is going to hell. If you doubt Jesus then you are not a Christian.

  • This is so absurd! Every society has issues. You are exaggerating the situation. In some cases these conditions are seen true, but these are very few cases. I wonder why you did not mention or shown inter caste or inter religion couple even living in live-ins. I had a friend happily married against her parent's wishes into inter faith marriage.she is a muslim and guy was a sikh. The Sikh family accepted the girl with open arms. Even the girl's family accepted them later on and i am talking about a tier 2 city. I am lawyer and we see ample of couple like this given police protection even honourable high court judges sorting these things out for couples. Just for showing a poor picture of India and getting some name for yourself showing India in negative light. How cheap initiative you guys!!

  • Killing is disgusting yet why are you encouraging this decadent, stone-age and pseudo-westernized culture into India, We need to improve things but surely need only follow the good of the west and not the primitive dating, free-sex, gay culture, etc. into our sacred motherland. We need to follow our experienced parents and solid-traditions and not get greedy and go overboard and destroy our society. Nevertheless, the Indian culture in it pious and rich-form is bound to survive and not get adulterated.

    • @vivekkumar1067 •You actually sound like the problem not the solution?So men are absolutely fine free the man in this film was not …If someone threatens to kill you or you fear them much ?Big Big problem Religion is supposed to not devise us in such ways it’s supposed to unite and make us care about each other to not accept means the past generation passing on there unhappiness and there personal cultural divides and hate that has no place in love of any sort ..All it make me have is a clearer picture of what my sons Father went through as a Buddhist the more I learn the more I am greatful to him ..The more understand I have and compassion but I would have done anything for him I would have taken a Granada Jumped in front of a train..Anything now I am doing that for my son …Alone .I don’t care our boy is a blessing he was planned long as he is happy ,his Father is happy I hope he is finally divorced not me he had an affair deeply unhappy in an arranged marriage..

  • You were talking of honour killing and abuse of lovers....now what I noticed in this video is abuse of an animal...a horse...tied to a short rope and it cannot relax or sit. It has to stand and remain in that position all day long and maybe for days. Isn't that animal abuse and cruelty? We just focus on cruelty to humans by humans but we should also see to it that cruelty and abuse is not shown on animals that help us like the horse tied to a short rope and suffering

    @shobhan1951@shobhan19513 ай бұрын
    • Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi always tie their animal with a short rope. I have seen goats, cows, donkeys and horses tied with 15" - 18" long ropes. Cruelty is in their DNA.
