3 in a Van - Winter Vanlife Scotland (it's too much)
Our last Vanlife trip without a baby! This travel video we head to Scotland to try vanlife in the winter in the highlands. We are joined by our friend Nick from Indigo Traveller for his first taste of vanlife. Unfortunately it didn't go to plan as behind the scenes Alex suffered with burnout and it got too much to continue.

⭐ About Travel Beans:
Hello and welcome to our channel! We are Alex & Emma, a British couple who have been exploring the world together for over 10 years - from backpacking to vanlife:
2012/13: We both embarked on our own solo backpacking trips through Southeast Asia, where we would eventually meet at a hostel in the mountains of Thailand and begin traveling together. After a year and a half of backpacking around Southeast Asia & Australia, we returned home and to the corporate world!
2015: Travel Beans was born and we filmed our first videos on a road trip around Europe with friends! This was our biggest trip yet.. and you can go back and watch the entire adventure because we filmed ALL of it! This trip took us through Russia, Mongolia & China, on the longest railway journey in the world. Followed by highlights such as staying on a local island in the Maldives for a month, going on safari in Sri Lanka, couchsurfing & hitchhiking in Korea, seeing the snow monkeys in Japan, island hopping in the Philippines, trekking 60km through the centre of Myanmar, exploring the Indian Himalayas, and checking out some of the incredible US National Parks.
2016: Despite an unbelievably memorable year and a half of travels, which we were incredibly grateful to have had the privilege to experience.. we found ourselves in New York City, battling depression. At this point, we decided to go home and confront this problem head-on.
2017: After 6 tough months at home we decided to go away again, but this time with a goal in mind.. to turn travel into a lifestyle. We left the UK with just £500 in our bank account and a dream to make a continuous travel lifestyle happen! We both got online English teaching jobs to be able to fund our travels and to keep creating videos. We can't quite believe that our younger selves decided to take this plunge but we are so grateful they did as we are still on this journey today!
What now?
Over the years, we've discovered that we LOVE road trips and even decided to renovate our very own little VWT4 van into a campervan to be able to enjoy vanlife and spend more time on the road. We are now the proud owners of 2 awesome little campers - one based in the UK and one that we keep in the USA. You'll often find us using one of these vans to explore Europe and North America. If you enjoy this kind of content we'd recommend checking out our Italy Road Trip series, USA vanlife series and our Japan in a Tiny Van series as well as our UK vanlife content.
Our time spent overcoming depression has influenced our outlook on life dramatically! We are now traveling the world in search of what makes us happy. We love sharing the highs and lows of our trips through our videos and hope to spread a little positivity and light to all of the beautiful people who take the time to tune in and watch each week!

  • Just a quick comment. Thanks for your courage in sharing your battles with depression. I am so pleased that you have found the counseling you need. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give yourself a break in posting videos if this allows you to rejuvenate mentally and physically.....I pray for both of you as the excitement of the new arrival nears. Know that both of you are a real inspiration as you remain so positive about life. Keep up the bad jokes--you are hilarious and a joy!

  • My biggest advice I can give you. That someone gave me when I was pregnant. My daughter is currently 6 months old. The advice was to not stop your life for her. Whatever you are going to do include them and it has been the best thing ever. She is great when we go out into public.

  • On burnout and depression. I myself fully understand. When my three boys were little, I was living like a single Mum, doing everything, though I was married. The human body can only take that for so long. I had a nervous breakdown. Through the stress of everything that was happening, on a daily basis, for so many years, I have been left with episodes of depression and anxiety. My three boys, now adults, have suffered similarly. My middle son passed away 18 mnths ago, having suffered depression for many years and ongoing chronic pain due to a spinal defect from birth, exacerbated by stomach cancer, loss of his marriage, business loss due to Covid, accidents, medical collapse, surgeries, learning to walk again x 2, cheating partner, then when it appeared that he could at last see the light at the end of a very long tunnel, we lost him tragically in an accident. To say we are broken, is an understatement. Wishing you both so much joy and healing, with the arrival of little Noah 💗💗💗🙋🏼‍♀️🚐🌏

  • Hope all is well with you guys. Do take the time to sort out your life changes. Harriet and I are behind you 100 percent . The van looks great. Looking forward to seeing the next video. We hope one day when you decide to revisit van life in the U.S. You could pay us a visit to Virginia and come stay and tour with us. And Alex, we all go through periods of depression in our life. To address the burnout that you are experiencing in life is the first step to recovery . Having your soul mate Emma and a good friend around helps to weather those moments. Sending you much Love and Affection🙏❤🙏 Love Beans . Harriet, Jim and Yuki Richmond, Va.

  • My babies helped me to slow down. They forced me to sit down whenever they were hungry (which was often, since I never fed them on the clock) and to just be more relaxed because everything moves a bit slower with a little one. I hope you'll be able to ignore all the "well meaning and friendly" baby advice that you'll probably be getting online and that you'll be able to enjoy this precious time on your own pace and your own time. I will continue to watch your videos no matter how much spaced out their releasetime is.

  • Emma, that end of pregnancy insomnia is horrific! It’s a cruel trick of nature that when you need it the most you don’t get it. Alex, I’m so glad you are so aware of the signs, take care of both your postnatal mental health (I’m a mama and a nurse, so i fuss over everyone!) The arrival is such a buzz, and that postnatal bubble is glorious, but sometimes our hormones affect us. My husband struggled months after because he struggled to come to terms that he almost lost me and our son in birth. Look after yourselves, we are all still here for when you’re ready! Congratulations, well done mama, and welcome little Noah. ❤

  • Travelling with little ones can be enjoyable as long as you and your children are flexible. I spent 3 days and nights travelling from Ottawa to Edmonton with a 26 month old and a 6 month old. I had to travel by myself as my hubby was driving back with a truck full of goodies. It was cheaper and easier to travels that way then spend 6 hours flying. We had a roomette with bunk beds and a bathroom. As my youngest was starting to crawl and was very active, the space in the cabin allowed him some space to move around . We also traveled by train from Whitehorse to Skagway, ferry to Sitka and down the Alaska coast to Prince Rupert and train to Edmonton the next year. The toddlers were able to walk on the trains and the ferry when the seas were a bit rough. For both of these trips I made sure to have lots of snacks, toys and books. We continued to travel with them as they grew up and we moved to different parts of Canada. Flexibility and take naps when they do.

Until then take all of the time that you need to take care of yourselves & to adjust to the new dynamics of your family of three. Remember mum, ACCEPT help whenever it is offered & even when it's not ASK! I had identical twin girls my first pregnancy & I wanted everyone to leave me alone & let me just be the mum that I wanted to be but then again I NEEDED the help. After a few breakdowns we all figured it out. Be easy on yourselves & one another. Sending love, hugs & bunches of baby kisses! What a blessing to have TWO AMAZING people create another AMAZING person...the world needs more Beans! 🙏🏻 👶 🎉💙 🍼 🧁

I have two grown children, and I remember how much our lives changed when we had them. Enjoy your last few days before the baby comes. Cherish your time with the baby when he comes. They grow up so fast.

  • I deal with anxiety and depression , also have panic attacks. I’m glad your getting the help you need. I’m to the point I don’t like to go out much. Just work and home . Shopping sends me into an attack so I order on line and go get it latter. It helps a bit. Have missed you both so much. Prayers for you both-soon to be three. Me

  • I missed you all. Congratulations on 3 travel beans!!! Burnout is real! Last year, I was working so much I requested off but it was denied 😔 😪. But since passing 1 year probation, I am now working hard to work less and within my time frame of 8 to 5 instead of 8 am to 12 am every day. My little one is suffering academically and socio-emotional and I need to be more present by slowing things down. So yes boundaries for sure on ourselves and the job. Family is most important 💜💜💜 along with forgiveness and self care and self love

  • Take care of yourselves and honestly don't pressurise yourselves into making a video each week build them up to release when you are ready in your own time . The only pressure you feel will be self inflicted. Realising problems are not the end of the world releases so much of that pressure. Looking forward to the 3 beans.

  • Thanks for sharing. Too many are afraid to admit they are struggling one way or another. We all need to take a rest from whatever it is we are doing and take care of ourselves. Hope you both will take that time to refresh your own selves and your well-being. But I am glad to hear in time we all will still hear from you guys. Stay safe and take care

  • You've done the right thing, when I had problems I first left work and went home. I then told my boss I wouldn't be in for a few days. I got some help and then renegotiated with work how I was going to come back (I was trying to do the job of three people due to delays in resources arriving) In the end I moved to Spain and changed my work life after a second break down but finally managed to get the perfect balance, I was lucky in Spain to have a great boss and really supportive colleagues. Good luck, slow down and above all else enjoy friends and family❤

  • 😂😂😂 the train going to sleep overnight no. I didn't on Amtrak it was outrageously expensive and I never slept all that rocking back. Been there done that never again and it was 30 hours from Washington DC to Chicago!! I went to visit a friend there. And as I was getting off of the train I was booking a flight back and cancelling the train back. 2 1/2 hour flight back and like $600 cheaper... I know that this channel will be pausing for a while but I wish you guys the best of luck and I hope the algorithm does come back for you at some point ... ❤.

  • Life happens.... We had so many great plans for the last two years and things happened, (like the unexpected early birth of a grandchild) that derailed them. We're in no way as big as your channel but we lost subscribers because we had to take long breaks, so we get what y'all are experiencing. I'm a bit of a control freak, admittedly, and it gutted me when I couldn't produce a video weekly, but eventually, I had to understand that the viewers that were loyal would hang out and understand, and they were the ones who mattered. We can't WAIT to see what's next for y'all and to celebrate the new life you're bringing into the world.
