Rick Wakeman Plays Trilogy -- Tribute to Keith Emerson

Rick Wakeman was one of several performers paying Tribute to the Life of Keith Emerson. This was a one time performance at Symphony Hall In Birmingham, England, July 28, 2017. I apologize for the periodic shakiness of the video, I have an 18-300mm zoom lens that was nearly at maximum zoom where even slight moves appear as big ones with no tripod. I also had to keep the camera low as the people behind me kept reminding me what a PITA I was being!

  • Sadly, the legends of rock ,we grew up listening to, are now at an age where we are losing too many of them. And, the new crop cannot compare.🙏🏻

    • The new crop, especially rap musicians, can't light a candle to the musical talent the people like Wakeman and Emerson have/had. I've introduced my son to these classics, ELP, Yes, Genesis, Tull..... and he wishes this was the music that was being composed and played today.

    • Sadly true, but access to music is so much easier than it used to be. So, even though I have about a thousand albums from back in the da, there are thousands more that I wanted and even more that I was unaware of. Now with streaming services and easy downloads, I can listen to entire discographies of bands or musicians I am aware of or easily find similar music by different musicians, I carry around 70gig of purchased music on my phone and have even more cataloged in my streaming services. As for live shows, they are much harder to find but they are out there!

    • @@leonardoD81 There's plenty of incredible music being made today, including rap and all that good stuff. Death Grips is one of the freshest groups I have ever heard. Also, MF DOOM was incredible. I could go on, but I got school, so take away this one lesson: Every generation and genre has incredible music, and every generation also has peepee poopoo music. The 70s had a shitload of garbage and disposable music made during the decade, but we all remember the incredible music that stood the test of time. You should go outside of your comfort zone and listen to modern music. You do not have to like it, but please don't say that an entire genre doesn't have talent because that's silly.

My first concert was at 8, which was the Beatles. I saw Yes 4 or 5 times, and ELP 3 times, so to be able to sit and watch these musical giants perform their masterpieces was an honour that my poor kids never got to experience. I can't express enough what a great vehicle KZhead is for sharing these musical moments with the current and future generations. We were just young college students then and although we already knew about their incredible music we didn’t seem to quite know what to expect. It was surreal. The first half blew us away. We were shell shocked. During the intermission the announcer told us the 2nd half would be even better and astonishingly, he was right. Keith was bending notes into oblivion on the moog, Carl was buzz-sawing his synthesized percussion and Greg’s voice just cut right through you. You never forget something like that. Emerson, Wakeman, and Paul Banks will always be the three main characters that gave us Prog Rock! Even Jon Lord was incredible and will be missed. It’s really only Wakeman and Banks that are left. The beautiful music will always live on. Wakeman is a treasure playing for another treasure. ELP, Yes, and Genesis were in many households and still is.Deep Purple? That’s in my house too. What the men gave us in music will never happen again. Some of today’s music is good but nowhere near what these men did.

  • Fantastic tribute for one of my favourite keyboard players by another. When I was 17, in about 1971 or 2 I was on holiday in the NE of England and practicing Aram Khachaturian's "Toccata" on the hotel piano in advance of a concert. Finishing there was clapping from the back of the hall, from a young man with long hair. He came to the piano and asked me to show him some of the fast bits again. Then he had a go and sight read the damned thing. For an hour, I showed him what I had learned about it. Then he played me a Toccata which he had written. I asked where I could buy the music. Not Published, but you can listen to it here and he wrote ELP on a card. When I got back to school I told my friends who said, "You idiot, Alker - you have just given a rock legend a piano lesson! That was Keith Emerson" A friend produced the cover of Trilogy and sure enough-there was my friend from the hotel. What a player.

    • Wow, this is a fantastic story. It would be just like Keith not to call attention to himself at your chance meeting in 1971. He wanted to learn from you, and then after a full hour of tutelage found the nerve to play his piece for you. This speaks volumes of the man, and your own gracious nature. Thank you, sir.

Very reserved whereas Greg was so very personable and we became friends for a brief time. As much as their passing means the end of an era, I miss the individuals more. Didn't feel good this morning and ended up watching several ELP videos. It breaks my heart.

Emerson and Wakeman (and the whole rest of progressive rock) succeeded in spite of the record companies, and not because of them. Now that the Internet is chipping away at the record companies' control, we can get the music we want instead of the music that the record companies tell us we're supposed to want.

The same cannot be said of Rick Wakeman. He was going to be a star regardless of what time or era it was. He’s that fucking good. I can’t think of another piano player in pop, rock, program or whatever you want to call it that is anywhere near him in talent.

  • With tears in my eyes, I too am overjoyed that you caught this on camera. What an amazing moment. I studied piano and then pipe organ through the 1960s. I discovered The Nice, then Yes, and ELP. All through the 1970s, I and my musician friends were obsessed with ELP. And I mean OBSESSED. We played everything. We deciphered ELP tunes note by note. I grew up in West Los Angeles and never missed an ELP, Yes, or Jethro Tull concert, nor did my circle of friends. My best friend, also a pianist, and I used our connections and money to get front row seats. No cost or effort was too much to make this happen, if we could possibly do it. So yeah, I was a fan, to say the least, and still am. Wakeman and Emerson were good friends, so I'm not surprised that Wakeman would do this. Trilogy is a particularly gorgeous piece of music created by Emerson, and Wakeman has the skill to work with it. Listening to this, I am instantly transported to the moment I first heard it, after buying the album on the day it appeared at Tower Records in Hollywood. I was was one of those waiting in line for it. Take A Pebble is another that I used to play endlessly on the piano. I probably drove my neighbors crazy, and I don't care. But I suspect they actually loved it. I never got a single complaint, ever, in all the years of banging on the piano. Tarkus was, of course, another. My neighbors learned to appreciate 5/4 or 10/8 time signatures. Haha. As is always the case with music, it will probably be a hundred years before these geniuses are fully recognized. But they will be. You can depend on it.

  • So I'm like 4yrs late to the tribute, Keith Emerson was is and will be my fav keyboardist but, at an extremely close and I mean super close second is Rick Wakeman. Way back in 1970 a man with a hook for a hand turned me on to ELP, I was 14yrs old. I had all their albums besides getting besides a few Nice albums because of Keith Emerson. Then in 1976 while stationed at Kadena AFB( I'm a Phantom Phixer) I went to the same record store I always went to then on one pay day(the USAF paid me on the 15th and the 30th) they show me this album by Mr. Wakeman titled, the Six Wives of Henry the VIII. Dude I was blown away it was like Switched on Bach but better, way better. I don't have the album I bought in Japan but, I do have the CD and a copy from Apple Music. I went to see Journey to the center of the earth in 1975 in Philly, mostly because Gentle Giant who were the warm up band before RW. I still listen to both band because 70's Prog-rock is da bestest.

Greg Lake had a most beautiful voice and was an outstanding singer, George Martyn the drunkard, such a gifted composer, singer and guitarerro, Mr. McCartney and John Entwistle such fierce beasts on the bass, John Bonham one of the most powerful drummers ever, 10cc a witty pop group with clever, world class compositions, XTC who could have seamlessly continued where the Beatles left off . . . my god I can't stop. One day Andy Partridge will be honoured as one of the most creative composers and Pete Townshend, too, I am very sure. Outstanding people.
