  • Humanity as a whole need to come to the realization that being wrong is not weakness, like in how failing isn't weakness, but a learning process in succeeding. I believe the most major hindrance to this is the ego. It stands like a bodyguard of sorts, limiting us from much greater potential than people realize. It isn't worth defending a facade of who you think, or who you want to be, if it limits so much potential in reasoning.

    • I have talked to a lot of people who act like they are completely fine with believing inaccurate things. I see 2 main reasons. 1 is that they will do anything to avoid the cognitive dissonance and the other is that their perception is on such shaky footing that they really know what it would take to destroy their metaphorical Jenga tower of belief systems and they definitely can't handle a complete collapse of their identity as it relates to what we call reality. It's a hard balance to find though because I find myself on the other side of the spectrum and I find it difficult to accept what I thought I knew it's been a solid decade of unraveling all of my presuppositions of the world and I have just recently started trying to build it back up but it's sort of a journey to be taken on your own. The only problem is that you have no real way to evaluate any outside influences that may impact your conclusions in such a way that you can get lost in just the process of evaluation. I know I have and I know that what has become a normal thought pattern for me is very uncomfortable for other people. But how can I tell when I confront someone about something they believe that I went to far when my mind is overflowing with competing ideas about things that were fundamental and foundational to so many other beliefs. It's a tough one

  • The mistake so many of us also make is when someone points out a fault in our logic or tries to explain why we're wrong ( even if done so in a civilized and non-condescending manner ) we often get mad because we don't want to be wrong and we double down on our wrong opinion and look for others to agree with us as confirmation that we are right. It's not easy but if I'm wrong and someone can be civilized about why I am wrong about whatever, I do my best to try and see things from their point of view because all I know is there is a LOT I don't know and a LOT None of us know or can know.

    • @@vwr32jeep Well, on the internet if you type something that is wrong on a public forum, you are going to get critiqued whether you asked for it or not. You can't post a public comment and than get angry that anyone responded to your comment that either disagrees or points out the flaws in your comment. There have been times when I've had to swallow my pride and humble my ego. When someone else makes a good valid point about the flaws in my comment. I accept it. Maybe I am wrong about why people get mad. I can accept that, but again on a public comment section. People should expect that not everyone is going to agree with them and some will call them out when they are wrong. That's their right to do so. It's all on how you handle it afterwards, IMO. Again maybe my comment is completely wrong in every way. An if so, I accept it and I'm moving on.

  • The interesting thing about truth is that you are more likely to be right by admitting you are more likely wrong than by declaring that you are more likely right. The psychological trick, then, is to understand that you are a fallible creature with a fallible brain perceiving an infinite reality using finite faculties. By practicing detachment from being either right or wrong, you will sharpen your curiosity. When you let curiosity flow despite what you think you know, you allow truth to emerge despite cultural conditioning. When it comes down to it, nobody is off the hook for being wrong. The best you can do is get better at recognizing the hook for what it is so that you are less likely to get dragged away by it. You do this by developing and practicing disciplined strategies for cutting the line and negotiating the hook before the Fisherman of Closemindedness can reel you into his Boat of Dogmatism.

      @2msvalkyrie529@2msvalkyrie529 Жыл бұрын
    • @@2msvalkyrie529 can you define "critical thinking"? There are several different commonly accepted definitions of which most reference something like "rational, skeptical, and unbiased analysis or evaluation of factual evidence". There are a bunch of issues with this that stem from the incorrect assumption that people are capable of being unbiased and are rational. We can do things in formal settings, like double blind research studies, to limit bias but can never fully remove it. The next issue is that rationality isn't a fundamental property of the universe but rather a property of how we make sense of the world. Animals, for example, are arational meaning they are not irrational or rational and if we say an action carried out by an animal was rational or irrational what we are actually saying is that we can create a plausible story using whatever language explaining why an animal might do that or not. I'd highly recommend reading the research study "Mental models and human reasoning"(Johnson-Laird, 2010)

We think we should have whatever we want, because we think we know what is best for ourselves. I'd bet most don't have clue, we are all very unaware of our behavior. I found out I had cancer years back and I had a realization of all the daily habits and tasks I would do: video games, watching movies or shows on netflix, youtube, social media, etc. almost out of necessity because it's the norm, its convenient and easy. • I have to be transparent - I see these videos now, and immediately think about whats happened the past 2 years. I can tell, I've lost my sense of curiosity, and am looking at philosophy videos to strictly help myself make sense of the past couple years. I hope, with some practice, I can shake this new way of thinking, and go back to being interested for the sake of interest. Maybe if I admit it publicly on these videos, I can become better aware.

  • Thank you for this insightful presentation. Here is an excerpt from Steps to Knowledge by Marshall Vian Summers about beliefs. "I believe what I want to believe. This statement represents the great folly of humanity and humanity's most dangerous form of self-deception. Beliefs are founded upon what is wished for, not on what is actually happening and not on what is genuine. They may in fact represent the greater ideals of humanity...but on a day-to-day basis, and in most practical questions, people base their beliefs on what they hope for, not on things that actually exist. You must have a very sound understanding that the approach to any resolution...must begin with current reality. What you are and what you have today must be your starting point....Examine what you believe and then examine what you want. You will find that even your fearful or negative beliefs are associated with your ambitions." (Steps to Knowledge, MVS)

    • There are two major MISTAKES in this video and I just wonder how these errors came to be in this clip which is supposed to be about reasoning. The MISTAKES start at 2: 44 minute. It WAS NOT Galileo that showed that the Earth revolved around the Sun. It was the Polish astronomer NIKOLAUS COPERNICUS. Copernicus wrote his work called '' On the Revolutions of Heaveny Spheres'' where he proposed the heliocentric system. And Copernicus did not claim that the Sun was the center of the Universe. And yet a few seconds later the narraror says that Galileo published his work stating that the Sun was in the center of the Universe which is preposterous. Our Sun is not in the Center of the Universe. We don't know where the center of the Universe is. These MISTAKES just glare at eyes and should be corrected in this video. So if I, for example , lie to you while pretending I am not though we both know that i am i might upset you which i could use to "prove" or rather manipulate that i am right because you know, "shouting people are always wrong". The difficulty is, if there is a third party watching our argument knowing nothing about our minds and the situation. They will support my opinion, even if I'm wrong. That would make me quite an asshole. But with all that agreement I tried to get I would care or would be quite proud of myself which wouldake me a greater asshole. Question: Would you interpret this as narcistic behaviour? I would.

  • The funny thing is, this is completely relevant to mathematics. I was in an argument with a mathematician that was trying to use set theory to show that "numbers are real." My argument was that both numbers and sets are abstractions, not real things and neither exist in reality and that using numbers to describe sets and sets to describe numbers is not only circularly fallacious, it actually provides absolutely no more information than just using numbers alone because the numbers and the sets are both contrivances/abstractions that are being described with the same exact logic, so what is occurring is they are actually making the same exact statement twice. It would be analogous to writing the very same sentence twice, once with print and once with cursive while claiming the two sentences have different meanings due to their appearance being different. I have yet to receive a response after I made that final point.
