In this episode, I will explain and demonstrate how to get more engagement and focus from your dog. This is also known as marker training or loading the markers. The two markers we will be the continuation marker and the terminal marker.
Continuation Marker: This sound lets your dog know they are correct, and you will be delivering a reward to them.
Terminal Marker: This lets your dog know they are correct, and they may come to you to get the reward. It is a release word that always predicts that a reward is about to be given.

I have a 3year old German Shepherd, I tried trainer who wanted me to be "firm" to the point that I was very uncomfortable essentially bullying my dog to listen. It was not sitting well in my gut. Hi. A question pls. How many things can you train a puppy all at the same time .. (obviously not all at that exact moment) or should you focus on one thing for a month or so until they get that and then move on to the next.?
@@wharnisbet I'm not nate nor ceaser but my 12 week old pup has been knowing the motions for sit,down,spin,stand, and center with verbal commands on the first 3 and a physical cue for speak
@@wharnisbet -- It's okay to work on more than one behavior/trick at a time. I generally work on only one to two new cues but will usually rotate the new stuff with cues he already knows. That's just how I do it. 😉 I train a 3.5 yo Pomeranian. If you're training 2 or 3 things at a time, try to make them substantially different from each other to avoid confusing your pup. Example: down, shake, and sit pretty. Just an example.
You know your dog is getting conditioned to the markers when they come running while you're watching the videos and start responding to Mr. Schoemer's markers! 😆 🤣 All three of mine, including the 7 week old, are sitting at my feet now, waiting for rewards, LOL!
(I'll have to put on headphones in future or have some yummies handy, hahah!)

Thank you for taking the time to make these videos, I find them excellent and I'm enjoying training my 6 month old Sprocker Spaniel with all the info I find here. He has a high prey drive when he sees birds so the engagement exercise will be great to practice with him, I can't wait to start it tomorrow. He does know his marker and looks at me when I say it while we are walking and doing other exercises and he licks his lips in anticipation so I know its reinforced, just need to work on keeping the focus. x
That focus-on-the-face exercise is a great idea. Thank you for the proof of it, too. I’m a newbie foster mom of a Lhasa Apso (13 yrs old), and so excited about training correctly and with dynamism. Not gonna lie, tho ... in public I feel odd using dog-training language and expression - the short, oft-repeated words/sounds, the perky upspeak of praise, and the animated movement to keep interest high, etc. - I actually like it but it’s so unlike anything I’ve done before and it’s in public. There are a zillion dog owners in my neighborhood, but most are silent up owners staring at their phones as their hobbled dogs drags them down the street. Even they (on occasion) look up from their phones and watch my new-to-me old dog. Thanks much for this video - very clear, helpful content. Looking forward to watching your intro training series.

After going through a "professional" group training with my 5 months old akita where manners and socialisation were supposed to be taught, but in reality it was obedience training, I was left frustrated because the dog would not listen at all. I didn't have high expectations for my dog as he is still a puppy, but I was none the wiser after the course. After seeing your video, I finally realised that no one taught us for to motivate and engage the dog. No dog will listen if they are not focused on you. Thanks a lot!!

These videos are great. Something that would really help me with questions I have on previous videos and especially this one would be these exercises but using a clicker. Things I'm unsure about are food handling since one hand is occupied with the clicker. What is the continuation marker versus the terminal marker with the clicker? Thanks for all you do.

Yes, In regard to the science part, keep in mind that when you are training your dog the science is always the same; what varies between each dog are things like motivation, perseverance, intelligence, temperament, disposition, etc. Being able to adjust for each dog’s specific needs is considered the art of dog training. Because of this, not all techniques work on all dogs; and as a result, you have to be able to adjust accordingly. For example; a dog with a very high level of perseverance will continue to work through a difficult task to get a reward-while other dogs may give up early. I hope this is helpful. Also would letting someone else train the dog who may use different markers like a clicker be confusing to the dog and slow down training or can they contextualize based on who is training at the moment?

Nice clear instructions! I added it to my dog training playlist. By the way, Ari is absolutely gorgeous! So is Hero! I love the deep red ones. Looking for a similar-looking Malinois pup. I have a question; my previous dog would often only stay in a down for about 1-3 seconds and then always stand back up with or without a stay command. This was the one command she had trouble with. She seemed too eager for that one part to be over or may have been uncomfortable in that position (I'm not sure which). How do you get them to stay if they do this each time?

This reaaly works! I do every lunch time this focus exercise with his dry food. About 5 minutes or so. He is a puppy of 5 minths. After only 2 days max he was conditioned. He licks his mouth when i say ´yes’ or ´free ´. He knows food comes. His focus is very high on me then. Howerver must be progressed to other places and activities. At this moment, i only do this in house.

I’ve commented on this video already, but I think this is the eighth or ninth video I’ve watched from you. I was so confused and getting a little irritated about the continuation marker and terminal marker because I just didn’t understand it. I finally started to understand it earlier in this video. Then I stopped it to make this comment around the 15 minute mark because you’re talking about the differences again and now it just makes so much more sense. So I guess my point is thank you for explaining it so many times because eventually I got it, lol. 😅

We have just brought a Turkish Kangal into our home and are feeling a bit discouraged because apparently the breed is quite independent. We have great trouble getting his focus on us. He is only 12 weeks, so hopefully this gets better!

Hi Nate! Love your videos. My wife and I recently Got an 8 week old German shepherd and I have been watching so many of your videos. Amazing content, I love your detailed explanations. My puppy doesn't have much focus right probably due to how young he is so I have begun engagement training along with socializeling him as well and building his confidence. A couple questions I have is what is a good age to begin engagement training and approximately how long does it take the average dog to become conditioned to the markers?
Thanks! I'll start as early as 8 weeks of age as long as the pup is comfortable in their new environment. I can get most dogs conditioned to the markers within 1-3 days. For you, it may be different depending on your timing. Since timing is so important, if you're off by a second, it can make the training take longer. In addition, the dog's intelligence, perseverance, and motivation will play a large role as well. I would suggest doing this exercise for three days, twice a day for 5 minutes. After that, spend 30 seconds to a minute of engagement training before each obedience session. This will help the pup become more engaged for each session, which will speed up the training. Lastly, even if he's not fully conditioned to the markers, by using them each day during obedience, he will become conditioned. I hope this helps!
Thanks a lot Nate. I am a newbee in parenting a dog and I have been struggling understanding my puppy's behaviour. Different people told me different ways but thankfully I found your channel and am watching the basic obedience training from the start. Now I am pretty confident that by your help I can train my dog. Just one question: My German Shepherd puppy is 50 days old, is it good to start his training? And is there any specific reward/treat which I can use as he is just 50 days old.
Thanks Mohit! Yes, you can start at 7 weeks of age, but I usually start the training when the puppy is 8 weeks of age. For treats I like to use freeze-dried dog treats or keto dog food from visionary pet. You can also use the puppy's kibble for training. I hope this helps and thanks for supporting the channel. 😁🙏🐶🐕

Hi Nate. Thank you for your amazing work, and for keeping it accessible for everyone! Your videos are incredibly educational. I'm getting my first dog soon and I plan to implement your positive markers technique. However to correct behavioral problems you suggest using a correction such as "No". How do you condition a puppy to understand that the "No" is a correction marker?
Thanks! The sound "no" or something like "phooey" that tells the dog to stop what they are doing or to go back to the previous position. I do this by first teaching them leash pressure, then using the leash pressure to reinforce the stay command, then eventually turning the "no" into a correction. Great question. It can happen to any dog, but some dogs are more prone to getting it, like the great dane. I avoid exercising (running the dog) a dog 30 minutes before or after eating. Training with food shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks, I appreciate that! Correct! If you use a marker sound, you must reward your dog. A marker is a lot like a paycheck, and you never want your paychecks to bounce or they will loose the value. Same goes with the marker. If you want to give your dog feedback without a physical reward, then use verbal praise. That's like a boss saying good job to his/her employees. It doesn't predict a reward, but it still feels nice to know you're doing a good job. :) Thanks for the question!
Brilliant video and well explained! I have your book too and it has some great information. Quick question, when doing boundary training like not letting the dog jump out of the car until you say so, do you use the release marker "Free" even if you will not give them a food reward? Or do you use another word to let them out of the car? Thanks
Thanks! If I use a terminal/release marker then I pay the dog with the primary. When we have a dog in a stay, then we have three ways to release them from the stay. 1) Release word. This is a sound that lets the dog know they are released, but it doesn't guarantee a reward. This is why it's called a release word. As you know, a marker is only a marker if it predicts one of the four quadrants of operant conditioning. That's your positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, and negative punishments. 2) Terminal/release marker 3) New command. I hope this answers your question. Cheers!

These videos are great! Is there a sequence of commands that you recommend for a puppy? In other words, what are the first, second, third, etc. commands? Also, how do you manage your hands near your face if you use a clicker for a continuation marker instead of “yes”? And do you ever offer a verbal command for engagement? I’ve heard some trainers say “look” when they are asking their dog to look at their face, but in this instance, you seem to be relying on the food without a verbal command.

Recently got my Dutch shepherd. She’s 9weeks. Very helpful, your videos! Have had her for a week. When I start working with her she gets so worked up and starts really biting my hands ,arms, legs. Please any tips on working threw this. Have two older GSDs, 9 &7yrs. Has been awhile since have had a pup and the mouthing/biting is off the charts

I can’t use marker words with my pack. “Yes” triggers my male pit. Did between the ears training to attempt to help with his aggression. All it’s done is create fear and obedience only on point when I carry the spray bottle the trainer told us to use.
I trained my dog not in an enclosed area and noticed they focused on me better than my previous dog that I trained inside the fence gate.

Hi Nate Firstly I want to thank you for your amazing videos. I've used your training methods since the day I brought home my German shepherd pup at 8 weeks. She is brilliant with all her commends in the house and garden. But as soon as she is out in the field with me she has no focus on me. Especially when their are other dogs to play with. She's really friendly with other dogs so it's great exercise but how do I get her to focus. She won't even do a simple "come" command whilst out.🤦🏻♀️which isn't what I wanted at all. She just wants to go and say hi to everyone

Nate, loving your videos and how you explain things! We just got an 8 week old Olde English Bulldog pup and really looking forward to training her. I’ve tried this exercise with her a few times already and it’s gone ok so far, but man is it hard keeping her engaged. I have two questions for now. Should we absolutely get this down before we move on to anything further, like luring or leash pressure? Is there a general time frame this takes or does that depend too much on breed, age, frequency, etc?
I will usually do one day of just engagement training. Then the next day I start with luring and leash pressure. However, before every training session, I start with 15-30 seconds of engagement training to get the dog into the mindset to be focused and to learn. The pup will become conditioned to the markers if you continue to use them correctly. Meaning, you say the marker before delivering the reward. :)

Should I only focus on engagement in different environment with different distractions and then start to train commands?

Thank you for the great videos and I have just picked up a copy of your book too. I have been working with my 4 year old rescue dog on your engagement training exercises. He is doing great but he is a very skittish dog (we know he was shot in the past but don't know much else about his previous life). If I make any kind of hand motion or move my hands up to my chin, he runs away from me. Sometimes he will run if I just give him a command. Any suggestions? I really want to build his confidence and he seems to enjoy training very much.

I have a Belgian Malinois puppy, eventually I want to be able to run and have my dog off leash. Is there any tips or tricks you can suggest or maybe make a video about off leash training to get up to that point? Thanks and keep up the great content! Your series have really helped

Thanks! Great question. The marker "free" pinpoints the correct behavior. The reward is being able to jump up to get the treat or the toy. If you don't want your dog to jump up, reward the dog at a lower level to prevent the dog from jumping up. When doing a training session with a dog, I like to incorporate multiple behaviors in one session. Meaning; in one session I’m not just working on one command the entire time, but rather multiple commands. I may start by asking the dog to sit, then a down, then heel, then a down in motion, followed by the center command, etc. This makes the training more fun and engaging for the dog. As a side effect, the dog learns faster. Also, when training I would suggest filming yourself. This will help you identify and fix mistakes that you may be making during training. Thanks, Sergio! As long as the Yip, sounds different than the yip yip, then you should be fine. Meaning; make sure the rise and inflection in your voice is different for each one so it's very distinct to your dog. I'd love to see a video of more focus from a dog in a distracted environment. My puppy is very focused on me inside the house or familiar areas. As soon as he goes to a newer environment, he's way too distracted to focus on me.

Hi Nate. I'm totally obsessed with your videos and so glad I have found your KZhead page! I have a 10 weeks old gsd and we have been practicing your engagement and marker training since the first week. She has been only with us a week and a half and she is pretty much conditioned to the yes marker however she won't stay in sit position after she gets her treat so it is difficult to keep her focused for the terminal marker 'free' she is focused til she gets her treat after 'yes' then she walks away sniffing or doing something else. Is it too early or does she need more time to get used to her environment? I'm really making it fun and sticking the treat in her nose but i can't.make her stay in the position! Any advice? Thank you!

We just had a great time with this in the back yard. I lost him for a few seconds when a squirrel ran overhead, but he actually focused back up faster than usual :D I do have two quick questions that I would really appreciate your time in answering: I've seen your answers to other people saying that you train at mealtime and like to make dogs work for their food. Does that mean you are essentially giving the dogs their whole breakfast/dinner in the form of these rewards? Second, is there a 'too long' to have them make eye contact before rewarding them for it? I know eye contact can be construed as aggressive behavior to them, and River gave me a little bit of growling when I held out too long. (On the other hand, demanding is kind of his default state if I hold out too long on anything at all, which I'm sure will just take training him to wait in gradually larger increments and not reward him until he stops bitching, but it's becoming a looong process with him.) Thank you for being so incredibly generous with your time and knowledge. These videos add up to thousands of dollars worth of private instruction and you have done countless dogs around the world an invaluable service in making them accessible for everyone. I'm absolutely going to be buying your manual shortly!
Thanks for the comment and for supporting the channel. 1) Yes, I like to use the dog's food and I have them work for each meal. However, I only do this until they can do all commands on verbal only. This allows me to start spacing out rewards, so I don't have to give them as many as we do at the beginning of the training. 2) You can increase the duration for the eye contact as the dog becomes better with the exercise. In the beginning, I don't make them wait very long as all. Cheers!

Nate, you mentioned the continuous marker “yes” is an implied stay. However when im fre shaping, should i still use the “yes”? Even if i didnt command my dog to do that specific action? Also, my understanding is to condition to both markers before doing free shaping?
Hi MaxMoto! Just think of what the word predicts. Continuation marker only predicts a reward, while the terminal marker predicts a release and reward. If our dogs are not in a commanded position and we use the continuation marker, it doesn't make it a stay command. It's just telling them they are going to get a treat. For the terminal marker I only move back to encourage the dog to come and get the reward in the beginning when I am conditioning them to the marker. Once they know it is a release and reward, then you no longer have to make them come get the reward, you can hand it directly to them if you like. so if I say down and my dog lays down, I can then say free and hand the food to my dog. At that point my dog knows they can get up from the down position. And yes, you want to have your dog conditioned to your markers before free shaping.
