  • TRLDOC is my vote. Love the red arc brake controller. I put mine on the right side of the steering column. Center console is also an option for the radios if you don’t mind losing that storage space. Heat exchanger for hot water may be helpful.

  • That's a great rig, only to become even better. With the Red Arc Brake Controller, I've found that mounting the control in the middle somewhere has proven to be beneficial for me. The reason is that if I have my hands full and need both hands on the wheel, the co-pilot can make the necessary adjustments. And, if I'm flying solo, I can still reach the controller quite easily and it doesn't get bumped. YMMV.

I love that you are doing the first aid theme, as a former EMT I can truly appreciate the value of what you are doing. I am wondering if you can share with your viewers where they can get some basic first aid training and also if there is training that may be more valuable for those off-roading or out in nature in general. So excited to see the end product!!

  • Addressing your radio predicament… consider relocating the MTX575 GMRS to up under the driver-side (Matt over at Ozark Overland Adventures has a decent install tutorial) which will facilitate your goal of a short antenna lead, then install the HAM radio in the glovebox. For a snorkel option, instead of cutting your hood for an external one, maybe consider that Rough Country has one that runs underneath the hood and replaces the passenger side cowling (Cara over at Ozark Overland Adventures runs one) that gives you options to just run as a cold-air intake or swap to the snorkel when you need it. Hope that helps with some ideas! 👍🏼

    @OverlandAddiction@OverlandAddiction4 ай бұрын
  • For your Snorkel, I would consider the Rugged Ridge snorkel kit because it installs under the hood and comes out the passenger side cowl panel which will allow you to leave your antenna right were it is. I run this snorkel kit and have had no issues.

  • For the Ham head unit, I got a rearview mirror delete from CMM Offroad that replaces it with a RAM mount. It's perfect as the rearview mirror is useless anyways with a canopy/trailer. Also as a former paramedic, I also remember when I realized that I needed to remove all of my IV supplies from my kit, as I'm no longer licensed and nowadays only maintain a Wilderness First Responder certificate.

  • I love watching your videos, I get so many ideas. With regard to radios. I mounted my HAM/GMRS/CB bodies under the driver's seat, the mics are mounted with the faceplates on a Lido Radio seat rail mount. HAM antenna is on a driver side hood mount, GMRS antenna is on the right of my spare tire mount, and the CB antenna is on the left of my spare tire mount. Easy to route wires under my Goose Gear full plate (rear seat delete on 2021 JLUR). Would love to see what you're doing for off grid power on the Gladiator.

  • You can extend the coax cable by using a barrel plug, which is an adapter that has a female connector on both ends. This will allow to attach an extension cable onto the existing cable, and to move the antenna to the other side of the vehicle.

  • A couple of suggestions for where to mount the main ham radio: I think you might consider locating the main transceiver unit itself somewhere in the area where you're going to remove the rear seats. It should be ventilated and possibly a fan added if it's going to be within an enclosure. Also, I think your idea on where to locate the detachable face is a good location.👍 I guess for sure you're going to have a VHF, UHF, (2 m, 70cm ), transceiver so you can access repeater's, but is the ham radio also going to have HF capabilities?... ...And be just one all in one radio... ...70cm, 2m, 160m - 10 m & 6m? If so, it will make a difference on DC current in regards to the wiring; IE: correct wire gauge to power the unit, how to design an enclosure, route coax and also where to install the antennas.

  • Regarding the antenna for your GMRS, my solution was to relocate the XM/Sirius antenna from the B-pillar cross bar to the top of the driver side A-pillar using one of several relocation kits, then mount a low-profile 450-470 MHz Larsen antenna in it's place. Up high for better reception/transmission and fits fine under the hard top. One less thing sticking out to get caught on a branch as well....

I have a JCR Molle Rack with my radio mounted and the microphone and the cord does not hang down at all and it makes it very easy to hear and use while on the road or trail. I also have other things stashed there too, like my sun hat. I also have my antenna mounted on the front edge of my JCR bed rack which may not work for Doc, but as you know, having a good metal ground plane helps with antenna performance. Can't post a photo here in the comments, but if you want to check it out let me know or go to JCR Offroad 😉

Hint, there are ways to use HF/VHF/UHF radios for out of band transmissions and reception. Talk to the folks over at HRO in Kearny Mesa about that. Josh over on Ham Radio Crash Course may also be a big help. He can be found on You Tube as well. We would love to see you and Regina at the next Chili Challenge next year if you can make it. Best 73.
