How to: Oxy Acetylene to Propane Compressed Air Torch

This is a short overview of how I took an oxy/acetylene torch and modified it to work on propane and compressed air. Simple iron pipe parts and some drilling. No machining, turning, welding, etc.
You can't weld and you can't cut - this is for heating up steel (or whatnot). I need it for my metal art projects. The cost of a true oxy/acet is out of my reach and I wanted to see if this would work as a substitute.

  • Thanks for putting a link to my video. Not sure why you drilled holes in the back of your burner as it will work without them. It took me many years to get this burner to work. I saw an ad in a magazine from 60 years ago about this burner but no info on how it worked so I had to start from scratch.

  • If you want to bump the heat up some more you can run the fuel through a bubbler filled with your favorite flammable liquid before sending it to the torch. Isopropyl alcohol, unleaded gasoline, and diesel fuel have all worked well for me. My setup is a little more compact and focused, burning what sounds like a lot less fuel, but still able to braze 1/4 steel, brass, and copper. Get yourself some fire brick to put under your work piece also. You might be surprised by how much heat a steel table will soak up and give nothing back.

  • On your cutting torch, your oxygen knobs work kinda opposite of your assumption. The bottom knob sets full flow volume, the top knob is for setting your pre-heat (idle) flame. In use you open your fuel gas, and light it. Adjust to least smoke flame (fuel knob on the bottom). Then you crack open the oxygen knob, and open it about a quarter turn (top knob still shut), no effect on your flame yet. Now you gently crack the top knob, and adjust your flame to neutral. Use the neutral flame to preheat your cut start point til you just get "sparks jumping" from the edge (just the odd meteor, not a shower), now squeeze the lever, do your cut, and release the lever. The cut mechanism is that excess oxygen is burning the carbon out of the steel. That means the cutting torch ONLY cuts carbon steel. It'll burn up aluminum (because it's a fuel), and do horrible vandalism to stainless, but will NEVER give a clean cut on either. Cast iron and carbon steel, awesome. Anything else, wrong tool. Will it effectively give benefit to your "compressed air/propane torch" rig? I dunno, but I kinda doubt it. The preheat flame is basically just your welding tip flame, so any excess compressed air beyond that won't really do much good unless more fuel is added too. Or so it would seem. Only way to really know is to try
