It's 1559. Francis II, King of France is celebrating the conclusion of the Italian Wars, when he tragically dies in a joust. This unleashes a civil war between Catholics and Huguenots, that will develop into a European war. After the Tumult of Amboise Catherine of Medici and the Politiques propose concessions. But after the Massacre of Vassy compromise seems impossible.
The Prince of Conde and Admiral Coligny rally against the Guise. The Battle of Dreux is won by the Catholics led by Anne de Montmorency. Nevertheless the moderates win and King Charles IX issues the Edict of Amboise.
The War resumes spurred on by the Catholic Conspiracy and the Surprise at Meux, but peace is achieved after the Battle of Saint Denis. The third war kicks off with the Battle of Jarnac and the Battle of Montcontour. With the Dutch Revolt the war widens even more. Sectarianism reaches its peak at the Saint Bartholomew's Day Massacre.
The War of the Three Henrys proves to be the most destructive one. Henry III is ousted from Paris after the Day of the Barricades and the Catholic League becomes supreme.
But Henry of Navarre defeats Mayenne at the Battle of Arques and the Battle of Ivry. After the Siege of Paris and his conversion, Henry IV becomes king. The Edict of Nantes is proclaimed in 1598, ending the French Wars of Religion.

  • My best work to date! New features: a genealogy of the main characters and a timeline of events, improved sound, small mistakes were corrected, and Basel was slightly shifted to the N-E. The next series will be about Early Modern Asia and it will be great!

  • A lot of Hugenotes fled to religious freedom in the Netherlands, which helped in the coming years to spur the Netherlands into a a golden age. I came across a Hugenote church near the Hague that served as a monument. Great to have received this video from the YT algorithm to learn more about those times. Subbed as well!

    • Lots of Huguenots came from the artisan class, and their skills were highly prized in both the Netherlands and in England - this influx of new talent helped to spur proto-industrialization, and arguably laid the groundwork for the industrial revolution (along with many other factors, of course).

  • Very well explained and illustrated. My only complaint would be about treating Navarre as a non-entity, when it was still an independent polity north of the Pyrenees (Bearn, Low Navarre and Soule as vassal), and retained nominal independence through all the reign of Henri of Bourbon (later absorbed into France as a "province" but the schuteon remaining along the French one as memory of that duality.

  • my mother's side were Huguenots who fled France and arrived in South Africa's Cape in 1688. Though they quickly assimilated into Afrikaner culture and language. When I was young and visited my mother's family in the western Cape in the 70's I vividly remember my grandmother leading me to a cemetery showing the ancestors graves. Virtually all the last names on the gravestones were French. She was a Malan, and the names of Afrikaners that were married into the family included Lagrange, Terreblanche, Laroux, Malherbe and Duval. She told me the Afrikaners of Huguenot ancestry, even though they lost their language still retained pride in their Huguenot ancestry and made an effort to marry other Afrikaners of Huguenot background.

  • Both of my parents ancestors were French Huguenots. I know that they were seen as the Protestants and original were I'Eglise Reformee. When my fathers side left France they went to Holland and joined up with The Dutch Reformed church. My Mothers side left France and went to England then to Virginia first landing of Huguenots in 1699-1700. But the English made them walk 25 miles up river to occupy a supposedly a deserted Monacan Indian village? Which I believe they forced the Monacans to leave that area. Because the English had already wanted them out of England and they didn't want them in Williamsburg either because they were mostly trade people and Silversmiths and seamstress and trades people. My Father side went too The New Amsterdam (New York area) in 1670's. I'm so proud of my heritage and I carry the Huguenot emblem on my back window of my SUV and I'm a member of The Manakin Huguenots of Va. But thanks for the History here, Avec amour `a tous Huguenots!

So many Christian churches lived in peace in Transylvania, thanks to the World's first law of the Freedom of Religion from 1568: - Catholics, - Lutherans, - Calvinists, - Unitarians, - Sabbatarians, - Anabaptists (Hutterites), - Orthodoxes.

If all of Hungarian crown land including Transylvania fall to Habsburgs earlier wouldnt that hard to practice such religious tolerance given Habsburgs were staunchly catholic?

My understanding is that it is still a hjottely debated issue. And there are many conflicting analyses of the events. To make a parallel look at the investigation of the events on Jan 6... now we are talking about events that happened 6 centuries ago, with no record and within a day. The King look at Coligny as a father, and Catherine just married her daughter to the head of the Huguenots. The whole thing doesn't make much sense.
