    • Well, the reason why they do so isn't because they're hungry. They do so to avoid food competition with the future generations and an elderly weak komodo may become prey to the young adults if it ever happens that it gets into a fight and is hurt. These animals basically live to compete for food.

  • A Komodo don't have to pin down a prey & kill it on the spot, like the rest of other predators. All they need to do is draw blood from its prey using their teeth. The prey can run away but sooner or later it will drop dead due to the infection caused by bacteria in the Komodo's saliva. The Komodo will then follow its scent & devour the prey where it laid down to die.

  • Its been known for a long time that Komodo dragons are cannibals. It stands to reason they would be, of course. I don't know if the island of Komodo or that part of Flores where they live had any native prey animals before people and their livestock arrived, but I suspect that they were few and far between, if they were there at all. At which point, when eating became the critical necessity, Smaller and slower dragons became top item on the menu!
