As a falcons fan, no matter how it’s spinned, I don’t like the pick. I don’t think fans have any spite or hate towards Penix Jr as well which is what sucks most.

I'm waiting to see how the season plays out before I judge the pick. If the edges the Falcons passed on for Penix crush it and we still can't rush the passer than I won't like the move. If we get into the playoffs and are competitive I won't hate the move.
Yeah Penix is ready to start from day 1. He’s 24, in college for 6 years.

Weird move for sure, but it’s only stupid until it’s not. If Penix ends up being as good as the Falcons think he’s gonna be, we will look back and say that was a genius move.

@@kennybradshaw522none of those veteran guys had received a contract that was one of the highest paid in the league and the guy the Falcons drafted is 24. All of the other guys were young, Penix might not get a chance to play until he’s 26 or 27😂. At that point the benefit of the rookie contract would be essentially over.

Atlanta didn’t want to lose out on all the hype that came along with all these rookie 1st round QB’s ! They are gonna get a lot of primetime TV slots this season I bet ! If Kirk doesn’t work out they will have a good backup ready to takeover ! Wise pick from Atlanta but bad pick for Cousins and Penix because 1 will have to worry about getting replaced and the other might have to sit on the sidelines for 2-4 seasons lol
Seeing Cleveland last year with 3 Qb injuries, I guess this move makes senses especially considering K Cousins age

Another part of the Falcons decision that makes you scratch your head is Penix being a left-handed quarterback so it certainly changes the offense when he comes in for Kirk. Great player but how can you pass up Bowers or Turner?
By that logic the only good fit for Penix would have been Miami lol
They already have Kyle Pitts and plenty of weapons. They didn't need another TE

I think Dan sort of answered why it was a bad move when he said "Kirk hasn't ever played badly" and had he been there a year or two and this was the last year of his contract then cool but he just signed. As good as Penix is he has injury concerns and he's also in terms of a draft pick long in the tooth

Rome Odunze will be a fine WR. Why not trade down from the 9th spot and pick up more draft picks? Then add someone like Byron Murphy II, who can help the Bears get solid pressure to the QB with only 4 defensive linemen and help Montez Sweat. Draft a solid WR in a later round, in this rich 2024 WR class.
Lombo was the first to say he really likes Penix as a player, but you can't have 2 rolexes. This has been going on for 2 years btw, Olovsky says something dumb and Lombo is the only guy who steps up and crushes him.
Always draft your qb if hes there. No exceptions.

My issue is that is an expensive bridge player. And what happens if they make the playoffs with cousins are they just going to get rid of him after that.

I love this move. Its smart, obviously the Falcons are a better with Cousins at QB, but he is coming off a major injury and he is 36 years old, thats why they only guranteed 2 out of the 4 years, but lets just say it works with cousins, they make the playoffs in that weak divison for the next two years, they wont be able to draft a top 10 pick for the next 2-3 years if they make playoffs, playoff teams draft what late teens into the 20's thats why i understand his move and think its smart. Penix sits for 2 years, learns from a pro bowl QB, learns the system and from coaches etc, and takes the reigns from cousins and blossoms into the QB he is projected to be.
If Giants were intelligent, they would take the best possession WR in entire draft to compliment Nabers, KEON COLEMAN. Instant offense.
As a falcons fan I love Penix for us. I just don’t understand if you rated him so highly why pay Kirk that money? That money could’ve went elsewhere. I would’ve been 100% fine with no Kirk and Penix starting week 1.

I will say, if the Falcons are in the playoffs 3/4 next season with Kirko, and they do not resign him after, we will be looking back at this pick in 5 years saying great of an idea it was. On the flip side, if that does NOT happen, this is one o the worst picks in NFL history. But this is what makes the pick fun! I don't know enough about the Falcons to understand their current situation in full, but the rational that Dan explained is 100% there.
