amazing
As a long-time Roland fan and collector, I initially scoffed at the Behringer clones, but at less than the cost of dinner and a movie, how can one go wrong? I grabbed the TB-3 and RD-6, copies of two machines I don't have and cannot afford, and was not disappointed. They really capture the spirit and sound of the original instruments. So much so that I also bought the more pricey VC-340 Vocoder. Haters can hate all they want, but Roland had ample opportunities to re-release their vintage instruments and chose to go another direction. (...expensive, crappy miniature digital copies) Behringer simply identified and filled a niche.
👍👍👍
Yeah. I have a rd8, AND the vc340 (love that thing). Roland their chance. BUT.... I did end up selling my model D and kept my se02. I think Roland got that one right. Or.... Studio Electronics forced Roland to get it right hahahaha.
I have been wondering about getting that VC… would be super useful to have and can’t you use external sources as carriers too?
Totally agree. Although I can understand Roland's position to some extent. They are a hight-tech company that have sunk a lot of resources in to research and development. They must believe that their modern digital technology is far superior to what they turned out four decades ago. It is a bit like asking a car manufacturer to re-release a 1982 model. Yes, there are factories in India and Brazil still turning out cars based on 1970's models for the domestic market, but that is not something WV and Rover wants to associate with. Question is, Could Roland have re-released their classic instruments, fully analog, at a competitive price and meet their own quality standards? And would that even be a smart business strategy for them as a company? I own a few behringers. They are great, being what they are: quite archaic retro-instruments. I also own a tr-8 and a tb-3, both of wich I find really well-made, well thought out products.
@@bsbazzman The VC340 sounds fantastic, and yes, you can use external audio. There are several i/o options. Also, the build quality is pretty nice. It looks, feels, and sounds like a classic synth.
Your strategy of getting double views from each viewer is obviously working, since I keep watching each video twice, once straight through to get the narrative and a second time to pause at the memes and visual jokes. Excellent work as usual.
💯
Thanks!!!
Microfreak !!!!
That is so true... I have to have one hand on the space bar to pause and read the memes... Love this
I made it to 1:33 - did I win?
I'm pretty convinced that if the Boog was made by Moog and had $1000 added to the price people would be all over themselves about how amazing the device is. But because it has Behringer's name on it, "it sounds stiff", or "they didn't quite nail it" when you can't even match two real Model D's to sound like each other due to age, tuning, how long the device has been on etc.The Boog sounds great and is affordable to for pretty much everyone in actual hardware form instead of some VST. Can't everyone just be happy about that?
You definitely have a point here
Moog already has synths that do most of these sounds and lower in price but a cheap 100% clone would destroy their own minimoog market. Anyway most synth buyers prefer cheapness over sound every day. That's why this show is called bad gear. Also the fact 2 old mini's don't sound the same doesn't prove anything. Yes that analog is unstable but that doesn't say anything about comparing boog to a real mini. You really have to listen to a real one to be able to compare them. And the internet is full of dumb synth owners who compare apples with oranges without ever having played the real deal. On osc level comparing the sound maybe samish but that vanishes once you search for their edges. All behringer synths have a behringer sound. Even the boog.
The whingers so much remind me of people in the watch community who own sub $1000 Rolex Submariner 'homages' that are a) legal and b) 90% as good as the watch they're copying.
@@BaddaBigBoom It reminded watch too, BUT watch companies are smart enough to give people what they want: cheaper versions v Rolex vs Tudor, and reissue. (As Fender gives people Squier). Moog sleeps so Behringer does the job
Yep. An original Moog is like a piece of furniture. A boutique made device and "looks the part". People should watch videos about Fender vs Squire and you'll find out that many professional musicians use Squire at times, they have no qualms about using cheaper gear. The realise that what you do with it is more important.
As someone who has never been in love with the Moog sound, getting to experience a bit of the Model D for just a few hundred dollars was good for me.
👍
If you're not in love with the moog sound what are you in love with
@@tadknuf7979 not moog sound.
And then you realize that it isn't a Moog model D ( _which_ Moog, btw ) , but in fact a 'Behringer D". Simulacra and simulation of a genealogy, indeed. Genes are just genes, and then there's everything else that aren't genes.

That's actually a good thing;)
@@AudioPilz A4MK2 when? :)))
Roland SH-32
@@KL-tn1xc do people actually consider the Hydra to be bad? The consensus seems to be that Hydrasynth is one of the best pieces of hardware from the last decade or so
After years of playing with presets on VSTs, the Model-D was one of the first hardware synths I purchased. I didn't keep it forever, but it taught me the actual building blocks of synthesis that no other program or piece of gear could at the time. It was affordable and accessible and I'll always be thankful for that.
Yeah, the structure of the D is super helpful!
I'm using it to teach my wife. You are so right about this. It's super intuitive. Then again, I have a friend who found the 2600 super intuitive and I had to call him a couple of days ago and beg for help understanding the signal flow.
@@davidpetersonharvey But 2600 is super intuitive. It only stops being one after you get to the voltage processor and try to make an HPF sound out of it.
Yeah Moog really knocked it out of the park with that design.
@@Ajoura it is to me now ... mostly. It took a couple of days for me to wrap my head around the signal flow.

I literally cannot fathom how you make these videos, but they are ART for sure. :)
Uli gave us all the D with this synth!
Behave!!!
I love all my «Ulifications», better than this «American niche manufacturer» stuff ;-)
I use a Poly D, which adds a few simple, yet surprisingly effective extensions to the Model D's architecture and it is the one synth that I have almost always plugged in and ready for playing. Also, my few months old toddler absolutely loves it for some reason. If I may offer a few tips. There is a PWM of sorts - the 3rd oscillator offers an inverted sawtooth wave, which is primarily for LFO duties, but if you layer it with a saw in the second oscillator, you get a PWM-like with detune controlling the rate. It's not perfect, because it changes rate with pitch, but it's there. Another, more obvious, so maybe you've used it, trick with the 3rd oscillator is setting it as the modulator and leaving oscillator control on, which gets you FM and AM sounds controllable from your modwheel. BTW. as a slightly educated electronic I'll pedantically add, that the Moog filter implements voltage control using the, normally unwanted, effect of virtual resistance on the emitter electrode of a bipolar transistor. I haven't checked, but I suspect that trick may be used in few other places in this synth. This is very smart, but wrong as far as traditional rules of circuit design go, since that parameter is dependent on transistor's beta. Which despite being the supposedly most important parameter of a transistor, is a wildly unreliable parameter, that can differ by a factor of a 100 between two transistors of the exact same model and changes significantly with the temperature of the transistor. You can partially reign in that instability if you are building the circuit as an IC, but that type of circuit built out of discrete elements will inevitably be unstable to some degree. So when you say it's a bit unstable, like the original - yes, that's the nature of that beast :D
Yeah, I really have to give the Poly D a try!
What a finish to 2022, great video! Thanks for all the laughs and great sounds 🙂!
Thank you!!!
Happy new year man! Thanks for the great year of bad gear vids
HNY! Thanks!!!
Excellent demo (as always)! I sold mine as my SE-02 did the same job and has a sequencer. Agree the Boog offers great value and fatness, although the first batch are supposed to be really hard to keep in tune for more than a few minutes. Happy new year! 😃
Thank you!!! Not only the first batch;)
If the goal is to replicate the Minimoog, then that's a feature. ;)
This was my first hardware synthesizer! I don't have it any more (getting my moog fix from a slim phatty these days) but it still blows me away every time I hear it.

Fantastic video. I've had an Uli-D for ages, so no idea why I chose to watch this, but I'm glad I did!
Thank you!!!
I've played MiniMoogs since I bought my first one in '74. The Behringer Model D is not identical to the original, but it costs $300 for heaven's sake! The cost and rackspace is a fraction of what you'd need to duplicate its functions with other modules. I put two of them in my Eurorack (right below two Behringer 960 Sequential Controllers) and I use the real Mini for solo work.
👍
I think that not even the reissue by Moog is identical.
Starsky Carr would beg to differ... He compared an original Moog to the Behringer... even used an Oscillascope. They're identical. The beautifully branded MOOG logo makes yuh feel nice... placebo is a hell of a drug. (if anything the Behringer is more stable because it's all new components... funny thing is, knowing that, you'll probably still use the MOOG for studio work, just so you can say it's a Minimoog on the record).
Love the use of the 'Moog Dancers' video clip. 🤣
Such a great performance!!! Thanks!!!
It’s always nice to see a piece of my gear featured a bad gear video. ❤

I can never keep up with the tons of jokes and layers of sarcasm you pack in! Just what is needed in gear coverage videos- other KZheadrs should tap into this secret formula! Very mind blowing every episode. I liked when you mentioned the ‘niche American company’ copying this. Ha! Of course your effort replying to comments is also heroic and unheard of among synth reviewers. I wonder how well the Moog Model D (digital) app competes with this (?). I agree the sound cuts through the mix nicely. As does my Moog Sub Phatty. That seems hated enough maybe you could cover it..
Thank you so much!!!
I have gotten to the point where I watch each episode twice. The first time, I just let it run and enjoy it. The second time, I watch with my left thumb on the space bar to pause the video. I can then back up in time to catch the memes and other jokes. Left and right arrow keys move in 5-second increments, while the "," and "." will move you back and forth one frame at a time. Hit the space bar again to resume playback. Hope this helps! No, I'm not obsessive. Why do you ask?

Hey Florian. I love your content. Always watching out for the next episode. I'm viewing them twice at least. Once to hear what you're saying. A second time to pause and read all of the memes. Looking forward to the Polybrute episode one day. Recently I watched a video by a KZheadr who showed some buyer's remorse for getting the Polybrute. He was hoping to sell his old Prophet 6, but concluded the core sound of the P6 was better. I'd say he had unrealistic expectations anyway, because the P6 costs €/$1000 more than the Polybrute with less keys and far less features. Yesterday I bought a Prophet 5 and now I understand what he meant when he says the core sound of the Prophets is better. The Prophet 5 is even more expensive than the 6, has even less features and at its core sounds even better imo. I still prefer the Polybrute though. You get a lot more for your money. I like what complex sounds it can make. Arturia really excels in their software and firmware support and updates. They are really generous with free presets and loyalty discounts on their other products and such. You could also do an episode about the Prophet 600. That one doesn't have a great reputation for a Prophet. Behringer was supposed to make a clone of it (the pro-800), but it got delayed of course. Sorry for the long winded comment. I'm supposed to make music, but with all of my gear expectations are just so high I can't live up to them so I'm procrastinating. See you next year!

Haha! Nice! Love my Model D and, for those that hate on Behringer for copying, I just got a Gray Meanie and learned that the switchable filter is because Arp copied the Moog filter in early designs and Moog forced them to change it. When everyone is guilty of copying, no one is. ;-)
Yeah, the ARP filter lawsuit is legendary;)
Loved the Boog so much I plopped down the cash for a voyager. Man I love that synth. Behringer started my analog obsession with the Deepmind. I’ve largely moved on to classics and Dave Smiths, because there is a difference. But thanks to Uli for getting it started.
Was looking at a Dave Smith as an upgrade for my DM12, instead i got a second for 24 polly, a live 2 and a Digitone. Quality is great, but if that sound is only part in a track is it worth it? Can an audience tell or do you need audiophile headphones?
