  • Soccer AM goes hand in hand with FHM magazine and Maxim. They both appealed to the same demographic. They epitomized the lad culture which emerged from the late 90s and into the noughties. As a 20 something male, living at that golden time in history, i was literally living in heaven. I just didn't realise it at the time.

    • Absolutely right !! ...... I have been saying a lot recently about the world today : basically, the best of everything has already happened and feels like nothing will ever be any better than it already has been. Sounds dramatic I know !! The end of the 90's / early 00's really feel like the peak - music, football, cars, culture AND free opinions ........ WTF has happened to us ??

      @darrenletts195@darrenletts195Ай бұрын

    • Yeah, it was never really for me but it was a bit of fun and was never considered hugely scandalous at the time, especially within the context of 'lad culture' being as ubiquitous as it was. To say it hasn't aged well/wouldn't be on TV nowadays would be accurate, but if anything the show's gradual downfall coincided with it losing its chaotic craziness and becoming a bit more bland and predictable.

They only had shorts aged 7-8, and Fenners’ son had a Barca shirt, so we got everything together, and he managed to fit into them and we filmed the Ronaldinho crossbar trick for 4 hours in the John Arne Riise until Jimmy got tired

  • Mid 2000s, the show had peaked. I just remember knowing pretty much everything that was going on in all 4 divisions of English football and could name at least a player from most teams. Those days are long gone now, as I can barely follow my own team let alone any others. The show did have a 3 hour slot during this time and I always felt it didn't really get going until the guests started arriving but I watched it start to finish as a teenager, I lived for football at the weekend. Would never now get away with some of the stuff they did with the soccerette like Tim pretending to tie his shoelaces in front of her and Rocket hounding her in the background. I did like the main gag, Stan Hibbert,, Barry Proudfoot etc. The OG crew lineup of Fenners, Sheephead, Neil, Tubes, Robbie Knox, Rocket and others all contributed and I love how they involved them. If you followed a professional team, surely enough they would get mentioned time to time and even have fans on the show which certain other broadcasters would never have done. Nothing lasts forever and I didn't mind Max but it was done when Tim Lovejoy left but I'll never forget those mid 2000s days.

    • Why? The term soccer is British in origin and was in very common usage in the UK until the North American Soccer League took off in the mid 70s and soccer, seemingly overnight, erroneously became an Americanism. Saying soccer instead of football now seems to be sacrilege for some. However, Sky Sports' flagship Saturday show is and has always been called Soccer Saturday.

      @Newworldman66@Newworldman66Ай бұрын
    • @Newworldman66 It maybe a term originated in England, but it's never been common in England, or proper Footballing countries ever. Hence why the Governing bodies all have an F whether its FIFA, UEFA, AFCON etc, the FA, and all clubs are FC's. The only country that uses the term soccer is the US.

      @chelseagas2691@chelseagas2691Ай бұрын
    • @@chelseagas2691it was a very common word in Britain throughout most of the 20th century. The fact that a British programme was called Soccer AM and no one batted an eyelid at the time proves that. I can remember so many books being published in Britain in the 60s and 70s especiallywirh soccer in the title, and the word being used on telly, radio, and by footballers. The word fell out of use quickly though by the late 90s.

      @Stoggler@StogglerАй бұрын
    • @stuartjohnson160 It was called Soccer AM for copyright reasons. No proper Football fan has ever called it Soccer. Hence why every team is an FC, that plays in the FOOTBALL league, governed by the FA. Soccer has never been mentioned.

  • Soccer AM was my favourite part of the week in the late 90s/early 00s. The old man would usually cook up a big fry up and soccer am was the perfect build up to the weekend of football. But it was perfect at that time, with social media being what it is now there is just no need for a show like soccer am covering the week

  • It was a great show full of fun and pushing boundaries which is what all shows should do. Unfortunately it died when it was decided by TV executives that anything men like is wrong. Conventional TV is dying because it doesn’t give people what they want anymore, maybe going back to pushing boundaries and being innovative would help. It can’t be a fluk that is exactly what video sites like KZhead do and people watch them and it’s not just about convenience it’s about off beat entertainment.

Bit cringe looking back but the Fulwell End started chanting “Get yer t**s out for the lads”. • Cracking show. Remember watching the Lovejoy days with dad and loved the random bits like sheep-ups, Ally McMoist (its just a wee stain) and soccerettes etc. When lovejoy left it was still ok but lost the soul of the show.. The replacements just didnt quite stack up and didnt have the chemistry with Helen the way Lovejoy did. Some comment said that the wokeness didnt kill this but in reality it was probably one of the last nails in the coffin. The show would have just been another football discussion if not for their edgy skits and everyone involved knew what they were doing and if anything didnt it to try and propel their own “brand” on screen. For me, i stopped watching when i got my own place and refused to pay for sky, which with their costs, was probably another reason it ran out of steam as a show!
