The Life and Death of The Body Shop Founder Anita Roddick

Anita Roddick is really a legend in retailing, from popularising concepts like anti-animal testing which is now commonplace in cosmetics, to cause marketing and even fair trade, she made an enormous impact on the industry before her shockingly untimely death in 2007. She may have made many mistakes along the way, something she happily admits, and may have negatively impacted the lives of some of the people she was trying to help along the way, something actively rejected, but she always had her best intentions at heart and truly wanted to see the world be a better place. For me, my interest in her genius lies in the retailing concepts she championed, bringing self-service shopping to the UK and challenging the logistical norms in the production line in the industry at that time. She was an incredible person, and her memory will not soon be forgotten.

  • You seem to be the only source that cites her cause of death as a brain tumour. Every other reference mentions brain hemorrhage...

    • I just double checked it and youre right. I believe my source was the BBC, but it was immediately after her death, perhaps they had it wrong because it was so soon. Ill pin your comment 🩵

  • Gosh, thank you so much for this video. Regardless of what you think of Anita's ethics, she cared deeply and had good intentions. Inspirational woman. Really appreciate you going into such detail about her life, amazing video.

    • I agree. I feel like the way she gets demonised by some today is a bit like that saying "the road to hell was paved with good intentions". She really tried to better the world, and even though she wasn't perfect, I'd rather see someone try than to give in

  • I've gained newfound respect for Anita. Thank you so much for doing all the research and even reaching out to her family for the utmost truth of her life. I've always loved the body shop and like many others could feel the difference in the change when they were bought out. Could never pinpoint what it was but, something for sure was off. They will always be part of my discovery of skincare that could be effective wnd natural. RIP Anita.

    • Im so glad I got to introduce you to her. She seemed like such a maverick and her family represent that so much today. I literally cant even begin to explain how kind Justine was especially, really a great representation of the original ethos her mum had

  • love the video, thank you! I'm a bit confused tho about the picture in 8:51, since it's a picture from a salt mine in bavaria germany apparently? At least that's what the sign in the back of the photograph says

    • I thought it was really strange as well, but it’s from a Facebook group and in the comments they all talk about it like it’s a school, they talk about the teachers. So I wonder if it’s like connected to the school in someway, really strange.

    • All her kids are alive and well and Justine especially was really helpful in the making of this video, you can rest assured theyre all doing well. Sam had her business and Justine is now very happily civil patnered with kids. Actually Maiya, Anita’s granddaughter, just got married 🥰

    • 🤔 Bit puzzled why the purported alcoholism of any of Anita's progeny would be the principal thing u'd think to share here. ▪︎ Whether true or untrue, do u consider this platform an appropriate place 4 such? ▪︎ Whether true or untrue, wot good is served by ur putting out such a musing? ▪︎ Perhaps u wanna 'name drop'? Fair plays 🤷🏻‍♀️ | Then just go with something like 'My friend was Anita's daughter Cleaner. She enjoyed the job.' ▪︎ And leave it @ that 🙏🏻

  • Interesting video. Ironic that she was strongly against South African apartheid but not Israel. Maybe her views changed over the years.

    @ousouuuu93@ousouuuu9315 күн бұрын
    • They definitely did, she has done on camera interviews about it before her death. I think time really is the thing to notice, like when she went it wasn't that long after WW2 when the jewish people really needed a space because noone would take them following the war, they were actively discriminated against and so having a place was a good thing. Of course, their presence in the area changed over time as they began their own discriminations (i.e. how it started, not how it is now) and as they did that her opinions changed very noticeably
