  • They didn't mention that in Europe you can still get a proper utility-spec G-Wagen with a diesel, rugged interior with plaid cloth seats, smaller-diameter wheels, and all kinds of available options. They don't get imported into the US because Mercedes customers here really only want these cars for cruising.

    @Dr.TJ_Eckleburg@Dr.TJ_Eckleburg5 жыл бұрын
    • You can't get a utility G-Class in Europe or anywhere. These aren't build anymore. I'm from Germany and these rugged G-Class only existed up to the 80s maybe early 90s. They are top of the line luxury everywhere. Although we still have an i6 Diesel engine but even those cost 100.000€. The cheapest G-Class is 95.021,50€ in Germany.

  • Before "they" started importing G Wagons into the United States, the G Wagon was available from Europa G Wagon in Santa Fe, NM. Europa spent the money to have the G Wagon crash certified and was the sole importer and distributor for new G Wagons in the US starting in 1993. Europa also worked on certification of the G500 G Wagon starting in 1997, with certification for sale in the US in 1999. Mercedes purchased the distribution rights for the G Wagon in 2002 from Europa and began distribution of the G Wagon through Mercedes dealers in 2003 and that's how "they" started selling the vehicle in the US in 2003.

  • I think in Germany and other European countries they offered or might still offer a stripped out G Wagon for industry and such. I think if they offered that version here they would be a hit. I mean you have people buying wranglers for $60,000+. So keep the lockers and the general drive components that make this truck really good, ditch the V8 for a good inline 6, no leather maybe MB Tex, no flashy chrome, no power seats, basic stereo etc etc. stripped down for around the $60,000 price range ish I would buy it, look at the Lexus LX $88,000ish but size wise, the GX $65,000ish. Heck a 4 runner top of the line is close to $50,000. I think the could do it, it would cut away from the exclusivity of it, but... I dunno... my line of thinking.

I remember being 15 years old and driving a defender up and down a curb at 25 mph for fun, because you couldn't feel it. I remember driving a Mitsubishi pajero up a cliff in a sand mine... I remember seeing old Lada niva driving sideways with its nose pointed up a hill... We all remember Touareg absolutely destroying the deserts of Africa. My point is - if you have the opportunity, you take it. For example - the segment here 10:16 is meant to be driven at 20-30mph... the car can handle it, and if not - it is your job to find out and tell Mercedes they need to re-work their car! I could probably pass you with my Passat TDI on that track and I'm not even kidding.

    • Andrea, not sure where you are based but down here in Oz the toughest and closest competitor to the G Pro is the Toyota 70 series Landcrusier. When you factor on all of the aftermarket kit that you need for overlanding to bring the Cruiser up to the spec of the G it is a more expensive option: - Rear wheel track correction. - Rear conversion from leaf springs to coils. - GVM upgrade to match the G’s 1,200kg (2,645 pound) load carrying ability. - Bull bar - Winch preparation - Roof rack - Dual cranking batteries - Load-rated tie down points - Under body protection - Tinting for heat - Snorkel All of the above is standard on a G. Many would say the Cruiser is overpriced as well but we are talking about a very low volume, very durable, fit-for-specific-purpose overlanding niche. Anyone who considers purchasing a more conventional and affordable vehicle like a Ford Ranger isn’t going to make the G stack up in their minds on both cost and urban performance (solid front axel limits its road handling). The G is an extreme vehicle for extreme and conditions. Takes a certain set of priorities to value to G but if those parameters are there then it’s an amazing vehicle and one that stacks up beautifully... Can’t tell you how awesome it is for overlanding.

The G550 is a much better all round vehicle that can be driven on long journeys without the driver and passengers losing their hearing. I see the G, Discovery, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport as the last excellent off-roaders that are still nice places to be when you're not off road.

  • In 1990-s you could have new Land Cruiser with 3 way locking diffs and manual gear box. LC was similar with G-Wagon's technology on board back in the days. But they had much more powerful engines. G-Wagons were not the most reliable body on frame SUVs out there, but they had that charisma which gave its owners joy of driving them. If Toyota would update its Land Cruiser with all the modern tech and gave us 3 diff locks, twin turbo V8, body on frame - the G-Wagon would definitely look back for a new competitor.

  • Unfortunately, the price must be paid if one seeks a V-8 power train certified for road and highway use here in America. As compared to Jeep SUV’s, the consumer is seriously looking at big bucks getting that out the door. I really don’t like cylinder deactivation mode, and I sure as hell do not like engine off at a stop light. Jeep Grand Cherokees don’t hold there value as a Mercedes would. There is always the Toyota Land Cruiser, at over $90,000 here in California. But the 550 I would say would be really enjoyable as my only all-around one and only car I’d own.

    • Your 12yo XA30 is girlies car and not an offroader ...... or I'd rather say it's one of the worst ones. It's light but it has low approach angles, low ground clearance, insufficient suspension travel. Traction control is engaged even in locked diff, so the wheels that should pull you out are skidding. Even with TC turned off they skid alot. This wasn't offroad course to break a car, this was a car to hand out to reporters to thrash it little bit but not destroy. But yet, your Rav4 would not make it. At certain points, you will either be stuck, car sitting on floor and 2-3 wheels in air. Or your wheel would just hit the fender and game over for you.

  • IMHO: In accessing the "best off-road SUV", you can't just look at the off-the-showroom-floor performance. You also have to consider the availability of after-market support and accessories. A true off-road SUV should be highly-customizable and able to be personalized to the owner and his/her type of driving. Although I absolutely love my G-Class, there's no way I can pretend I have access to all the options available to Wrangler and Landcruiser owners.

  • This is exactly what the Jeep wagoner should go after. It should just forget about competing with Cadillac or Lincoln and go straight after the g wagon. Put solid axels with arb front and rear lockers with a power wagon suspension. Put the 6.4 liter V8 in it and the grand wagoneer the hell cat v8. Make the interior out of marine grad fabrics and materials that can get wet and easy to clean.
