Is Football Losing Creativity?

Hey everyone, this video was about Football (soccer) and how we are seeing less and less flair players in the game. It was always amazing watching the highlights of these amazing ballers doing outlandish skill moves and making the game so fun to watch. Now we see players maintaining possession no matter what and playing very systemic football. It does generate a lot of goals, defensive shape, and intense running. I just wonder how many ballers get left out due to being a bit unorthodox and not what scouts want to see! What do you think?
Thank you again for watching I appreciate all the love and support! See you all next time for another video.

  • Yea, profesional teams don't want that "show" kind of individual plays, they want efficiency and the most clean and "perfect" play

  • I agree. City are one of the prime examples of this. Every single passes they make are pre calculated. They play like bots. The only player that has a bit of freedom in the city team is kdb.

  • I would argue the game has become more creative than before, although less flashy. The kind of game you described loving to watch was not as tactically advanced as it is today, and so beating teams in my opinion at times took more or less your best players beating defenders one on one to score. Nowadays defenses are set up to where goals like that happen far less often, so players must be creative in their movement and passes to unlock the space to score. Take Phil Foden in recent months as a great example. Man City play against teams almost exclusively playing in a low block, making it hard to pass through and find space to score. Foden may not have the same flashy moves as some but he is excellent with his feet and positioning. He uses those skills to create goal scoring opportunities. Now with the transition towards more of team structure and specifically defending in a low block teams need to have players than can find the spaces to create goals. I argue this may have less of that magic flair that are in all the old highlights, but is more creative because it is less about dribbling past as many defenders are in front of me and more about manipulating the other team’s shape into creating space for a goal. Some people may call it boring to watch and that’s ok, but I disagree and find it far more fascinating to see the complex beauty of both strategy and individual talent being used in the modern game. And you can’t blame managers or organizations for doing this, because it has been proven to be far more effective, and when it comes down to it, their job is to win.

    • I do agree with the Tactical advancement of the game. It has opened up the door for new styles of play. It is also the new era of sports science, analytics, and knowing the highest rate of any chance a team creates. It makes sense to have teams use these different styles. Having a bit of creative flair while still playing the tactical way is possible as well! Just feel like some of those players are being "overcoached" and not all of them fit this "perfect" system. Since the game is changing, fitness and athleticism is needed even more in the modern game because if you can't defend HARD and sprint to every ball its over. Teams like City will break you down fundementally. Managers are in a tricky spot because look at how fast coaches get sacked nowadays!

  • You’re half-right when you say that it’s more about system than back then and you gotta realize that Pep is a special case. Look at Real for example: Ancelotti is pretty much laissez-faire in his coaching style and you’ll sometimes see players like Alaba and Rudiger make forward runs or Valverde trying to score from long range. You also have to consider the fact that not all leagues are on the same level and you’ll sometimes see players do crazy plays in the Brazilian or Dutch league that just don’t work in Serie A or the Prem. A good example is Antony, looked goated at Ajax but his skill moves just don’t work against the comparatively much more disciplined defenders of the Premier League. The game has become more pacy, more controlled and to some degree more “systemic” for sure but there’s still plenty room for creativity and individual plays. Also, putting Muller in the thumbnail, really? Sure, he lacks flair but nonetheless he’s one of the most creative players out there.

    @dietertheanteater@dietertheanteaterАй бұрын
    • Yeah, there is a small selection of players that still play with that swagger and their managers encourage it! That is true with the levels of the leagues.. but even with Ajax and Antony its not like he was doing what Neymar did at Santos or Adel Taarabt did at QPR in the Prem! The game has evolved and its a product of the advancement of the game. I love Muller, he's just known to not be the flashiest or the most "skillful" but one of the smartest players in the modern game and his teammates even talk about this!

  • Because flair is useless. Why have players do 100 stepovers or have them start styling on defenders for minutes when you can just drop your shoulder and go the opposite direction. Same with passing why have players make tough decisions under pressure when you can just automate the decisions for them.

    • @@olykanoli Bro but football back then was way more slower and had way less goals. It was also more stagnant. It was so common back then for it too take nearly 10-20 minutes for a team to get the ball near the opponents net. Will more skills really make up for that? Football nowadays is blowing up in markets that it never has before. Like the US for example
