Chris Weidman And The Agony Of Age: What's Left To Prove?

Chris Weidman acknowledges he’s already defied the odds by returning to the UFC after his leg snapped in half during a fight against Uriah Hall in 2021. But this weekend, Weidman faces Bruno Silva at the upcoming UFC Atlantic City card in New Jersey. Immediately after the fight was announced, he confessed that his body had been through the ringer and there was a chance the Silva matchup “could be my last fight.”

  • "He didn't respect his opponent and paid for it with his consciousness" say what you like about joe Rogans commentary - but behind John aniks famous 'not the cloth from which he is cut' line about leon Edwards this is the best line in mma commentary history.

    @paying-for-free-speech@paying-for-free-speechАй бұрын
    • Rogan's commentary is interesting to think about. He absolutely 1000% is in love with the sport and that is what made some of the moments like the quote you mention here. But, as he has become so busy with his podcast there is definitely a drop in consistency of his commentary. The only reason he is still around is because of how much he loves it but he simply does not have the time to put into the commentary that someone like Jon Anik does and I think it shows. My favorite commentary team is probably Anik, Felder, and maybe someone like Fitzerald or Sanko.

It's not the same as it is today, stuff that worked back then doesn't work any more, and new stuff nobody thought of is very effective today too. It's like Harry Caray in his late years as the Cubs broadcaster, he was a terrible broadcaster, he was still trying to watch 1970s baseball in the 1990s. It wasn't the same, not even close. People still loved him because of nostalgia, and he definitely loved baseball, the Cubs, and the city of Chicago, nobody will ever deny that. But his sport outgrew him.

  • A quote that haunts me like no other is one from Soren Kierkegaard: “Thus when the ambitious man, whose slogan was 'Either Caesar or nothing', does not become Caesar, he is in despair over it. But this signifies something else, namely, that precisely because he did not become Caesar, he cannot bear to be himself." The fighters that reached the pinnacle of the sport - the ones that get to have Dana White strap gold around their waist - are especially concerning when we see them stick around much longer than anyone thinks they should. You could understand people like Diego Sanchez, for example, who continued to chase the dream of one day being a champion. But for someone like Weidman, who did become Caesar, it's much harder to understand the motives. He didn't have a reason to despair. Maybe he's in despair because he's comparing himself to the Caesar he used to be. If that is the case, Dominick Cruz' wisdom should stick in the minds of every aspiring fighter. If you become a champion, you have to understand that - eventually - you won't be, anymore. At that point, you need to hope that you're prepared to be the person without that belt around your waist...

In every other aspect of your life you have to be the least important person, you're a father, husband, son...etc first. In a fight camp you are suddenly the superstar of your own movie your the man. You can suddenly put yourself first (to an extent) for those 8 weeks in camp.. add in suddenly being a centre of attention it's and intoxicating thing.. You feel young again. It's so hard to describe even at my bum ass level how great it feels... When you've been the best on the planet and are getting paid well to this must be magnified by 1000! You can't leave.... you HAVE to be put out.

The flying knee destroyed his ability to withstand the damage he was ince able to. More over his gym has 1 contender that is winning and dangerous to their division. Their first UFC champion was Matt Serra back in 2007, then Chris Weidman in 2013, Aljamain Sterling in 2021 and Merab will be getting his own title shot this year and win or lose, will remain a problem for 135 until he blows a gasket (which will end his prime). If anything, the longevity of the gym has been quite remarkable and compared to AKA and ATT, underappreciated. The fact that they've had Serra, Weidman and Sterling in three eras of the sport (00s, 10s and 20s) shows that your point about them being a 'relic years gone by', is nonsensical. They've still been able to produce fighters who've become champions. Contrast this to actual gyms that are relics like Jackson-Wink MMA, they've lost all relevance at the highest level since 2016 with only Jon Jones carrying their torch until he was kicked out in 2021. Or Team Alpha Male who haven't had a UFC champion since 2017 and all of their current fighters have struggled to break into the elite of their divisions. Do I seriously need to bring up other Relics like the Lion's Den or Brazilian Top Team to enhance my point? Sterling was a reigning, defending UFC champion at the end of the day and he only lost his belt like last year. Serra-Longo Fight Team is still relevant.

  • Is Bruno Silva some insane UFC fighter? He got dominated on the feet by Shara on his debut, bro got dropped by Gerald Meerschaert. Yall saying Chris is being fed to the wolves by having to fight a 1-5 Bruno Silva since 2022 is so disrespectful it's insane. He's definitely getting old but Jesus Christ since when has Bruno Silva been talked about like this. Idk how you go from fighting people on their debuts and losing to being talked about like a boogeyman for fucking Chris Weidman.

Just because you're the target audience doesn't mean you want to see it. It just means they are hoping that you will. The target audience is definitely the people that used to watch Nick Diaz, because like the other guy pointed out there isn't going to be new fans that know who he is and want to see him fight. The target audience is all of the older fans.

  • At 1:57 you mentioned Ric Flair, well he's not 90, (he's 75), and he now resides in Ohio. I know this because He comes to all the Columbus Bluejackets home games. He's not a hockey fan, (at least I don't think he is) he comes to the games looking for a market for his own brand of energy drinks called "WOOOOO Energy". He rides on the back of the Zamboni between periods and throws WOOOOO Energy into the crowd. I'm unsure if he is on dialysis or not but I'm pretty sure he's an alcoholic (I'm an alcoholic and we can usually smell our own). I will definitely ask him about the dialysis though.
