CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The Goa'uld attack as SG-1 is rerouted to Russia.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The Stargate saga continues as an elite military unit races back to Earth following the mysterious disappearance of two key team members, only to find themselves in an alternate reality where the Stargate has never been invented. Somewhere in deep space, the SG-1 team is in serious trouble. Two team members have vanished without a trace, and now the SG-1 unit's only hope for survival is to get back to Earth as quickly as possible. Upon touching down the team is relieved to be home, but deeply disturbed to learn that the reality they just returned to isn't the same one they departed from. In this reality, the Stargate has never been discovered and neither the government nor the military has never even heard of the SG-1 unit. But who altered the Earth's timeline, and why? Upon discovering that a malevolent alien known as Ba'al has been meddling with the planet's timeline in an attempt to conquer Earth, the team must race against time to defeat the most powerful adversary that they have ever faced.

  • One thing I like about this scene (of many) is that it shows the mutual professional respect between Carter and Mitchell. Mitchell is a top notch aviator, and led a fighter wing to save SG1 during the fight over the Antarctic. However, him and Carter worked in tandem here. Carter's prowess as a pilot is shown without taking away from others. When she suggest hitting the deck, Mitchell respects it. Little touches like that help make SG1 such a great series.

So thus it was suicide flight. Unless the brits or Norwegians decided they were ok with refueling russian planes at their air bases. I know the comment of in air refueling is going to come up. • While I agree that it should be one of the Su-27 variant instead of MiG-29, I should point out that currently, Russian start to replace the SU-33 on Kuznetsov with MiG-29K. The original plan was to start replacing them in 2010, but budget reason cause them to be delayed. He never said that the Migs were outclassed by the gliders, in fact you are correct in the statement that the Migs would wreck the gliders However it is true that the mig-29 is a short range aircraft. With a range of only 1,400 km whereas the f15 has a range of 1,900 km both without drop tanks, and the SU-27 has a range of above 3000 km. So yes, the mig-29 is short range, that is also not include the fact that the mig-29 can ONLY have ONE belly drop tank whereas most other aircraft have wing pylons to mount multiple drop tanks.

Remember, most Goa'uld are sadistic and cruel, they would like to draw out on the suffering, increase the amount of time it takes to destroy the earth, just to cause terror and suffering. Ever since the famous P90 demonstration scene where it's canonically confirmed that Gao'uld weapons are designed for terror instead of war I have wanted to see goa'uld facing helicopters, m1 abrams and everything in our arsenal. I addition to that, Earth was always unique in that it had _billions_ of people on it, making it more populous then probably most of the planets in the gate network. The Goa'uld must look upon Earth and see a nearly insurmountable challenge given the number of uprisings they have on primitive worlds. I just love the idea that no matter the odds they face whenever SG1 steps through the gate they have the backing of 7 billion peoples worth of modern military industrial complex.

I always wondered why Stargate Command would be restricted to pulling off missions like raids with small commando teams. There were episodes where the Jaffa wouldn't have stood a chance if we'd just had the wherewithal to ram a battalion or two through the gate and attack the target with more force. Small teams might make more sense from a storytelling perspective, but not from a realism perspective.

Modern fighters can lock onto and fire on enemy targets in the air from further than 50 miles away. Gliders only have staff cannons and no guided air to air munitions of any kind. In atmosphere, their wing design means they cannot fly stable at supersonic speeds, also restricting their turning radius compared to air superiority fighters. (Ever wonder why fighters have a needle on the nose and swept back wings? It's because the needle helps divert airflow around the airframe and the wing design provides for stable flight past Mach 1.)

It is shown that there is overlap. But then you get to some more energy weapons, Asgard Plasma Beams, Ori Beam weapons, Traveler's/Ronan's pistols are all shown to be a significant improvement over their counterparts, both energy and projectile. Guided Missiles are also shown to have a big advantage, both earth design and ancient drones. • It's a pity that there was no last Stargate movie where old enemies like the Goa'uld, the replicators or Ori from a parallel universe travel with a new developed technology into the local Stargate universe and confront the Stargate team with a threat that has never existed before, where also old actors reappear.

  • I can understand the idea of the staff being a "weapon of terror", not a "weapon of war", and the Jaffa being trained more to install fear than to fight effectively -- only that does not seem to apply to larger weapons, starting with the gliders. Surely those were not designed primarily to intimidate illiterate slaves into hauling large stones to build a pyramid, but rather to actually win battles. If so, this should have been at least as lopsided as the air combat between F-14's and Zeroes in THE FINAL COUNTDOWN.

    • i guess the gliders are used to shot a big crowd of jaffas of another goauld. the clashes of the goauld was the only use for gliders. you can see that very good in the series. the gliders cant really aim that good same for the alkesh.

    • I'd imagine the staff cannon would be a bit hard to aim, the energy bolt they fire seem rather slow so it's probably like the WWII era 37mm M4 aircraft cannon that was fitted to the Aircobra and Kingcobra fighters. Famous air force test pilot Chuck Yeager once likened it to throwing a grapefruit. If it hit anything in the air it'd destroy it, but the downside would be a large and slow moving projectile with a low rate of fire. And a staff cannon has a far far lower rate of fire than an autocannon.

  • If I were a Goa'uld I'd have just about every glider decomissioned ASAP (their guns would be either turned into turrets or handheld staff-cannons, like the one Teal'c used to kill Tanith with and the engines would be used for either hover-plattforms or integrated into my version of a Puddlejumper!), those things are trash! ps: Who said there isn't a Russian around when you need one? :D
