日本全国のワルが殴り合う地下格闘技トーナメント『WARU 下剋上』。リングに向けられるのは殴り合うことへの賛美のみ。大阪市西成区の山根道場所属のサップ西成選手と拳月（ケンムーン）選手にフォーカスを当て、拳の暴力に生きる男たちの姿を追った。
Waru (bad boy) is an anything-goes fighting tournament started by movie producer and all round entrepreneur, Yamamoto Yoshihisa. The tournament is now about as rough as it gets when it comes to organized fighting in Japan. There's no K1 or Pride-style sheen to proceedings and no pretty boy posturing or dramatics by the participants either. There are rules but not many of them: no biting, no hits in the dick, and no hits to the face when a player is down. Submissions are forbidden and KOs pay extra dollar, so that's the end goal; though usually "matches end up pretty much just like street fights with someone stepping in to break things up" says Yamamoto. Waru is all-out blood, sweat, and tears, as the red stained rags used to mop the ring after matches will testify to.

  • Thank you so much for this video! I knew PRIDE FC was the biggest MMA in Japan. It's good to see mma still alive in Japan. Plus I didn't really know Osaka is ghetto out there. That's new to me.

  • Watching this i remember "Holyland" manga. I dunno but there is something special about this guys. For a street fighter or in the ring they`re quite approachable and respectful.

  • Great video. I can really relate to these guys especially Ken Moon. Sometimes you feel as your calling is just beating the crap out of other people. Money is just a plus... On a unrelated note, I strangely find myself watching more VICE Japan than the U.S. VICE.

    • 最近は１０年前と比べたら全然大人しいです。以前は昼間車で信号待ちをしていたら、指を一本立てて寄って来る奴がいました。 大掛かりな取り締まりがあってから地下に潜った様に見なくなりました。とは言っても売人らしき怪しい奴をたまに見ますが。

  • I'm a foreigner, I would like to know what are the requirements to join this tournament, are there weight division or a weight limit? Is there an entrance fee? I would appreciate if somebody could answer my question about this tournament.

  • this is the kinda of fight i want to see, and not some UFC hugging-style fights. Ken and Sapp, too much confident and just plain badass. I want to see them fight with Thailand's best fighter too. Yoshihisa Yamamoto is right, evil is necessary...without it, there's no way to distinguish what's good for neither can exist without the other.

  • The thing is thy talk about rules in the ring- but also talk as if it hasn't taken them away from street violence either. I have no problem with controlled violence if events like this can prove to reduce street fighting.

  • PRIDE Fighting was always the best MMA fights in the world. Unfortunately, they got shut down by the Japanese government because they came under control of the Yakuza. Find some old PRIDE fights and compare to UFC. There's no comparison. PRIDE is where Quentin Rampage Jackson got big. My favorite of all time is Kazushi Sakuraba. He was the first to beat a Gracie. He ended up beating four of them IIRC. He was a beast. The first time he beat Royce Gracie the fight lasted ninety fucking minutes.
