A Coughing Horse. Is it Inflammatory Airway Disease?
In the summer of 2019 parts of Australia were suffering from drought and fires. Many horses were coughing and sneezing and struggling to exercise.
Dr Leigh discusses in this short video how we can diagnose why a horse is coughing and provides a quick explanation on treatment for inflammatory airway disease.
Look inside the horses' trachea as a tracheal wash is performed.

    • Yes it's definitely a problem. Make sure you put all your clothes away so that your cat can't access them.

  • Hello. My horse has developed a runny nose and this is now clear fluids. The cough is annoying for her but not constant. I recently moved her to a new boarding facility and she has had it for about five days now. She is eating like crazy and pooping normally. Should I be concerned?

    • Sometimes a viral cough can take a while to clear (just like us). If she's off food or develops a high temp definitely get the vet. Likewise if the cough persists beyond a few weeks. The vet would need to scope and perform either a BAL or tracheal wash.

    • @@YourVetOnline Is there a way of telling that it is indeed viral and not bacterial. She was well and fine until I moved her. Now she is around dust and mud and a prairie when before it was all treed property. I don't want her getting any other horses ill. She is peppy and hungry as ever during this. I looked at the color of the discharge from her one nostril and it has really improved in color, perhaps she is healing already?

    • @@meganpahl3612İf white crystal in fluid, it is viral.if it’s light yellow then bacteria.Always get a culture so you need to use only one kind antibiotic instead of using 5 different kinds. Always use scope so you can see is it by pharyngitis or lung inflammation or Laryngitis. If saliva come from mouth while walking and mouth dry in stall then there is big consideration with Pharyngitis and it can cause non stop secondary complications bacteria and also over use of steroids and antibiotics can down the immunity for forever. Anytime you see little problem at airway get the endoscopy and culture. If you still didn’t find check for urine,if still not get a culture from guttaral pouch. I’m with horses night and day since 20 years. Doctors are can’t meet the communground on airways problems. If you get a 100 vets, you’ll see your horse will be treated by 100 different ways and approach.
