Nadal finally ends Federer's dominance on grass, after two previous defeats (2006+2007). He won both Roland Garros and Wimbledon that year. But Djoko : Nadal 2012, had a hell of a tale. In 2011, Djokovic produced perhaps the greatest single season in history. In 2010, Nadal won three Majors. Djoko won three Majors in 2011, and defeated Nadal in clay courts that season. The showdown in AO 2012 was an epic five sets which cemented Djokovic's place on top of world tennis. I have to say, in terms of quality, the AO 2009 final and semi final (Nadal's match) were also phenomenal.

Per CNN today, but published yesterday said "The moment: The 2008 Wimbledon final between Nadal and Federer is widely considered the greatest tennis match ever played." Title "This world-class athlete talks like Aristotle and acts like Confucius. We can all learn from him" all about Nadal!!! That is why I am here.

That was the best Wimbledon final, maybe even the best tennis match of all times. Both players in their prime, delivering top notch tennis. Brilliance, class and grace personified. Two Champions.
Feds backhand was better in 2017, nadal just hammered it in this match.
I think the 2009 final was better. But we won't be seeing matches like these anymore, with the stupid new tiebreaker rule.

Nadal was ferocious here, he doesn't move like this anymore for obvious reasons!
After this match I bet for sure that Nadal would be greatest tennis player surpassing Federer as he was agressive, quick, energetic, stamina etc but one thing he lacked was mental toughness. I feel 2011 sudden rise of Djokovic is his phoenix rise made him become defensive infront of Djokovic. Never had the same confidence against Djokovic like he did here against Federer.
@@darthkothicame7822 Rafa had to make adjustments to his game when he plays Djokovic!! On the other hand he didn't have to do such a thing against Federe because he knew the latter's tendencies.

This match had a *HEAVYWEIGHT FEEL* to it with the same Ali/Frazier gravitas. I was so blessed to watch this live almost 12yrs ago- it was incredible then and even more breathtaking NOW! Was on such pins and needles for Nadal but glad he pulled thru!
Seems like Nadal has become more defensive over the years. He’s super aggressive here!

Andrew castles commentary....speechless at times. I remember watching this thinking this is two players at their absolute peak who both played to their peak on the day of the final. THE best tennis match that's ever been played. Never been beaten since. Legends.

Federer backhand is better today than it was in 2008 which is incredible to think.
Fed is incredibly stubborn sometimes to his benefit and detriment. He’s gonna regret not switching rackets and strengthening his backhand sooner especially if he gets surpassed in slam count. If he had then maybe he wouldn’t have the drought of 2013-2016. Rafa and Novak were always looking to improve things every time. Even Rafa who uses the same racket since 2005 was always making changes to his frames like adding weight.

@@LeonardoGatti1 in 2012 he won 1 slam after 2010 AO. The decline had already started. Then of course the drought from 2013-2016 . But perhaps if he had switched frames by 2009 or 2010 it would’ve payed off sooner

@@vanshagarwal2362 there was no motivation to change racquets. He won 2 slams and made the final of all the 4 in 2009. Won Australian Open 2010, made semis in 2011, won Wimbledon 2012 and went back to number 1. It's easy to look 10 years later and say he should've done this or that, but at the time there wasn't reason to change, he wouldn't change something that was working.

This was so good, it's one of those big three finals where you say: both played so well, they both deserved to win. Sincerely when its 5 sets for me, it's like penalties on futbol, it can go either way.

The quality of tennis displayed in this match is simply unmatchable, against any other player they would have won 6-1, 6-1, 6-0 !!!! Add to that, all the drama, anticipation since 07 final, legacy at stake, rain delays and suspense, the attitude and fight shown by the players and the fact that players being Rafa and Roger- in their 3rd consecutive Wimbledon final !!!!
They forgot the best point of them all , when federer defended a match point in the tie break with a backhand down the line....... the audience's reaction was louder than football fans when a team scores in a final .

I like how the tennis audience is so silent when the play is going on and then clap/celebrate in unison after a point is won. All sports are uniquely good.
The level of the match is evident from the fact that despite Rafa playing his best tennis ever he still needed 5 super tight sets to get the title and overcome the great Roger Federer! ❤️
