  • ''Budget'' is of course a relative term entirely dependent upon your disposable income. I appreciate that the cost of the kit varies depending where you buy it but it averages out at around £110 to £130 which seem pretty good value considering you have filter, lights, background, everything except the heater. I'd be interested to know what the retail price of those two pieces of wood and the 'only' 10 pots of plants were. I really thought you might give us a breakdown at the end of the video as to what it would cost for us to replicate what you have created.

    • A person chooses to spend whatever amount they "think" they need. I think a lot of this hobby is about looks and gadgetry rather than an interest in plants and fish.

      @heaven7360@heaven7360Ай бұрын
    • Exactly what i was thinking, it looks so easy: We got a starter kit but then we grab some of this and that and before you know you have spent like £ 600. It would be nice to break down the individual prices and give options, like this a £ 10 piece of wood, but this is a £ 25 and it looks alot better...

      @Ray47nl@Ray47nlАй бұрын
    • Here in the US each potted plant runs average $7 to $20 or higher. Then a piece of wood seems to run average $10 to super higher. Then there's the rocks. Don't have to have the usual aquascape rocks but seems like many people like them best. I do the rimmed tank route as in the US you can get a 10 gal for $14 dollars and all other sizes low priced too quite often. Also, do sponge filters. I realize though people can really put off by this direction, but I don't have money to burn. If you have the money what the heck, a person can buy what they're drawn to.

  • It's been years since I've had a tank, but my go to filter was the Aqua Clear. I ran the 70 on my on my 30 gallon long tanks and would run the sponge, some bio media and a polishing pad. They also had 'under gravel filter' setups for additional biological filtration and because I had those set up with one way valves into a T so that I could have normal AC air pumps and DC air pumps that automatically kicked on when the mains power went out and ran off a pair of D cell batteries. I might need to change the batteries, but those tanks were safe for days without power and that did happen because of hurricanes.

  • Beautiful tank, but while it may be 'low tech', it's definitely not entry level budget friendly at all. I get what you're saying with the whole 'spend the money at the start to help avoid issues like ammonia and algae etc', but it's honestly not realistic for a lot of people starting out to spend hundreds on substrate and hardscape and plants. Most people will get 1 piece of wood, maybe 3 rocks, and a couple of bunches of mixed beginner-friendly plants plus something like a java fern. Would love to see you do a true entry-level build where you set a realistic beginner budget and organise the build from that. You could do monthly updates to see how the tank is growing and developing over its first year. That would be super helpful for people to follow along with while doing their first planted tanks, like a mini-series.

    • That’s the beauty of fish keeping/planted aquaria. It’s can be relatively cheap or astronomically expensive. In some of his videos he shows a lot of ways to save money. You can also find hard scape either free or cheaper second hand, along with tanks , lighting etc… but MD has his own thing as everyone knows. Which is plants, plants, and more plants!

But nobody tells you that to achieve that you need to spent £ 2000 first 🤣 It would be nice if any of those youtubers remade one of their own low budget videos from years ago and use the 2024 prices.

Your tutorials and advice have been instrumental in the thriving condition of my setup. I've noticed that you use various types of rocks for your builds. However, most of these rocks can alter water parameters, and I haven't seen you address this issue. Could you please provide some guidance on how to address this concern? I'm particularly interested in using seiryu stones, but I'm worried about their long-term impact on my tank's pH and other parameters. Your input on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  • Definitely a tank I’ve had my eye on but the only thing I don’t like about the Superfish tanks is the fact they don’t have lids. If you’re a beginner in the hobby but you have other pets or kids that could get to the tank it means you have to make your own lid. Obviously making a lid is another expense of either time or money. Seems like the only way to get clear lids is by either being restricted to buying the cube tanks, doing it yourself or having them custom made.

I want to to start and feel I can now but I know I'm creating a monster! I won't stop at one tank. I loved the look at the beginning. It had a real Zen look but love the end product too. Again thanks. One question and sorry if it's a dumb one. Is PH differences because of the rock/soils being different in different areas?

  • @mdfishtanks it is the MD way now. You have replicated other practices… yes… but we all start somewhere and it is your way. (Your comfort zone, Because it works very well). Own it buddy 😁, hoodie brand it 😊. A nice modern adaptation of a Walsted method 😁👌. I have visited the tank recently and it’s still doing well… look forward to and update video

  • It was important to point out that the hardness and pH of the water makes a big difference in what plants you can grow. MD you really do have magic water if it is soft. Plants grow better in soft water. I have very hard water, so no hairgrass or monte carlo for me. But I can grow crypt parva as a lawn.

  • If you wet the background then use something to squeegee it onto the aquarium, there is no need for tape.

  • I'm new to this lifestyle, after getting a used tank less than two years ago. Now I have five tanks, and looking for more😂. On aquarium forums, almost every post has people saying "you must have an airstone or fish will die", or "you must have surface agitation for gas exchange". I notice very few, if any, of your tanks have airstone or much surface agitation. I'm curious as to your opinions on this. Also, I started with internal filters, then one used tank came with a canister filter, which I now use on my original tank (the only one that came with a cabinet). However I have had internal filters fail on me already, and after watching numerous videos and on forums, I decided to try out undergravel filter, with live plants. I've already found my plants do so much better, their roots just explode. What's your opinion on undergravel filters? Would you be interested in doing a tank with ugf, see how it compares to other filters? Ugf are so low cost, low tech, but I think they are effective. A good, low cost, way into this lifestyle?

  • Hey. Could you do a video on how you handle plants please? All the rock wool gives me the heeby jeebies, and all the fun with tweezers / etc. makes me feel like i'm going to be ruining roots. What's the way to do it? thanks!

  • I have watched many of your video's and they are amazing. I am not new in the aquarium hobby, i had freshwater aquaria when i was younger, from zebra and discus till pirahna and about 12 year ago i had a 1000 liter seawater reef aquarium. Now i am thinking to start a aquascape tank and that is something i don't have any experience in. Something i am not sure about is what size aquarium to start with. In seawater it is bigger is easier for starters. If you start you can maintain a 1000 liter tank easier than a 60 liter tank, since the bigger the volume, the easier it is to get it stabelized and keep it that way. Is this the same with aquascape aquaria? What size would you recommend to start with and is there a difference in a shallow aquarium other then the looks?

  • Hey MD! This is probably a easy one.. I saw one of your other videos. You mentioned we need to have a test kit for a plant eco tank. What if I keep changing the water 50% daily for a week, without having to test it? Would that be okay if we dont have a test kit?
