Early 21st century CGI really hasn't aged gracefully. I remember first seing 10.5 on a late late movie about 10 years ago, and it was jaw-dropping now, it just looks bad. A preview of what the Marvel Universe will look like to audiences 20 years from now. And it will not have the charm or creativity of Ray Harryhausen to sustain it beyond its era of production.

Hmmm. good question! The premise of this was that the North American tectonic plate, having gone as far west as it could, had begun moving east, kind of like a ball bouncing off a wall. In such a situation, the Yellowstone hotspot would apparently go into reverse. This may not trigger any kind of an eruption, let alone a super-volcanic one, but would almost certainly kill all the geysers, hot springs and stuff. On top of that, if the rift that split the North American continent is wide enough, Yellowstone might well end up under the newly formed sea... and if that sea is as deep as implied by the rift view scenes, it could produce a super volcanic eruption, and no-one would know it had gone off due to it never breaking the surface of the sea!

Right. That's definitely a bit worse than a Friday night drunken brawl at the Iron Horse Bar & Grill. A good deal more property damage. It's funny how movie tidal waves end up being at least 50 to 100 times bigger than the ones we experience (or have seen video of) in real life. Early 21st century CGI really hasn't aged gracefully. I remember first seing 10.5 on a late late movie about 10 years ago, and it was jaw-dropping now, it just looks bad. A preview of what the Marvel Universe will look like to audiences 20 years from now. And it will not have the charm or creativity of Ray Harryhausen to sustain it beyond its era of production.

Hmmm. good question! The premise of this was that the North American tectonic plate, having gone as far west as it could, had begun moving east, kind of like a ball bouncing off a wall. In such a situation, the Yellowstone hotspot would apparently go into reverse. This may not trigger any kind of an eruption, let alone a super-volcanic one, but would almost certainly kill all the geysers, hot springs and stuff. On top of that, if the rift that split the North American continent is wide enough, Yellowstone might well end up under the newly formed sea... and if that sea is as deep as implied by the rift view scenes, it could produce a super volcanic eruption, and no-one would know it had gone off due to it never breaking the surface of the sea!
