My dad had Wolfenstein 3D and the official hint book that had the maps in them, with commentary from Id Software employees themselves. Tom Hall said that Episode 6 Map 1 was basically designed to stop John Romero from being so good at the game. Supposedly Romero beat the entire first episode in around 5 minutes and at the time was the world record. I think it was beaten, but it's nice to know that whole levels were designed to knock your own co-workers down a peg.
Romero is so good at video games they have to make levels to hinder, *hinder* his progress, he is an unstoppable death match force.
You can clearly tell some ID maps were made out of spite to someone. Nightmare was made because Romaro was annoyed at some Usenet posts calling doom's Ultra violence too easy.
wow you're lucky man, I didn't even understand English back in the days I was playing these maze levels... I even had no idea it has some story behind. So sad my father quited this year and I've found this video only now!

Maybe because it sounds like "blast" and that's an action thing
If you think critically you can probably reason with the fact that we know 1 side of the story. When I played this game as a kid I thought it was so fun to kill all these "bad guys." After reading a couple of notorious books by the other side I really thought about what side's story makes more sense. Let's just say I can't play this series of games anymore. I can't stress enough how much blake stone is overlooked because it came from Wolf3d. But it's anything but a clone. Blake stone, takes every flaw from Wolfenstein and fix most of them. -Crowds of enemies numbing your senses? Don't worry, have a grenade launcher and mow down crowds in exchange of more bullets spent -Confusing maps? Worry not you have a map (and PLanet strike IMPROVES it further) -Pressing Space all over the place to find secrets? Nah, hold space and run around -90% of your enemies are hitscanners? Not anymore, now 50% of your enemies are hitscanners -Not enough bullets? Well , you can go back to a previous level and find any you left. VERY IMPORTANT for EPISODE 1 Secret level wich is a grade A bitch -Still not enough bullets? don't worry, instead of a knife you got a self recharging, albeit slow firing pistol. -textured floor and ceilings - Doors open faster. -You don't need to find all secrets. Only the ones with treasure because the game only asks you to find loot, not secrets. It even adds more things. Teleporters, a currency, vending machines. A mechanic where some of the scientists are friendly and if you don't kill them you can speak to them and they give you coins and ammo. And if you manage to NOT kill any and get ALL treasures AND kill All enemies, you get bonus points. wich are helpful for extra lives. Wich is a limited mechanic... because you can only hold 4. And there is NO extra life power up in BS. Enemies will hach from eggs, from containment boxes and tubes, One particular asshole infinitely spawns from plasma generators , and worse... Their attacks may be the most deadly in the game...And the turrets, they are usually not a problem. Until episode 3 where you have to literally try to dodge their line of sight until you find the machinegun... Turrets are immune to pistols or the grenade launcher. Only machineguns can hurt them Planet strike even introduces enemies with cloaking devices. Making it difficult to see them , specially from a distance. It has some stinkers. the troopers. Are massive dicks that feign death and force you to stare at them until they want to wake up, It's not even hard to know they are still alive, they just fall, bloodless to the ground and scream ADIEU. instead of screaming in pain. This mechanic is given an interesting spin in planet strike , where you are SO OVERWHELMED by enemies you don't have time to keep watch until they wake up. So atleast you do more than staring at them. In general Planet strike is like a Kaizo Aliens of gold. With the cost of only having 20 LEVELS. i mean it has 5 secret levels and the levels are bigger. At the same time they are Punishing as hell and each of them want you dead. Planet also adds invisible walk in triggers, wich do two things. Open-Close doors/columns or alerting enemies. And boy the game will try to murder you everytime you walk in a place and listen to a hundred enemies being instantly alerted. There is WAY more troopers in this game. Wich means 5 times the eniemes that will fake their deaths, but you don't need to throw 3 grenades at them, because you got a plasma gun. wich doesn't spend 4 but 8 bullets and hurt a lot... Even you. it has player damaging splash damage. B ut enough praise for planet strike. Bullets explode in this game. Hit them with anything explosive and they Explode. This is the worst mechanic i ever see. I get it. The game forces you to not abuse the explosives or make the conscious sacrifice of exploding bullets on your enemies or use the chaingun and take them out slowly, you can always make them follow you wich is really hard, because Wolf engine enemies are stupid as bricks and easily get lost. At the same time. while the grenade launcher Doesn't damage you. the bullets the enemies drop do. And that means that every time you kill an enemy with it close range. not only you don't get your bullets back, their drop explodes on you. BS , overall, is smarter at being harder than Wolfenstein when it itself gets hard. Enemies still shoot from behind each other, even visible projectiles. I even love it more than Rise of the Triad. ROTT is in a place where it tried to stay away from the basics of W3d but didn't have the tech to reach max potential and be toe to toe with Doom. But Blake... Its still wolfenstein, It keeps the basics. But improves the fllaws of the original. It even aged far better. Have this as a mini review until Civvie finally makes a video about BS.
Love this game. There's just something about walking through the castle with that ominous music, paranoid that some fuck is going to jumpscare you and blow your head off in a nanosecond. They may have removed all the overt stealth elements., but there's still a strand of that DNA left in there.
I guess id was really going back to it's roots with Doom 3
I played the OG wolfenstein. And man, there is a lot of potential for a 3d rendition. I believe in an alternate universe where Looking glass made a wolfenstein that was an immersive sim where the game is all about escaping the castle, kinda like System shock but in an underground nazi prison stealing supplies and disguising as officers. The closest thing to the OG wolfenstein is Hitman.
1:47 Civvie's continuing deification and edritch'ing of John Carmack never ceases to amuse me.
You gotta please the gods.
One strategy which is really useful is to intentionally alert enemies. Like opening a door and make some noise and immediately retreat and clean them up as they come.
That's worth doing a lot, but sometimes they stay put and wait for you anyway.
The thing about how Wolfenstein is great for portable gaming is so true, I first experienced the game through DOSBox on the tablet I had as a kid. It feels like it was designed almost like an early age iPhone mobile game, back before the market was polluted with ads and scummy pay to win shit. Super simple mechanics and tons of levels to slowly chip away at over years of killing time on the school bus or in waiting rooms. Still love it to this day.
I think my favorite joke about BJ is that he is depicted as the Nazi's perfect man. He's tall, blonde, has blue eyes, and is a really hard to kill soldier. His entire design is a giant fuck you to the Nazis.
Always thought he had ginger hair or black hair tho.
Always wondered where the name came from, though. It’s a Polish name, but there was actually a German major-general with the Prussian equivalent name Blaskowitz. The only Generalloberst not made a field marshal after the fall of Poland and France due to protests he made about the treatment of Poles and Jews in the German occupation zone. An interesting historical footnote in his own right, I’ve always wondered if it was a coincidence that ID chose Blaskiewicz or if it was a reference to Blaskowitz.
Same trick with Captain America.
He's also Jewish on his mother's side, which further pushes that sentiment, and before anyone claims this is something MachineGames came up with, this was confirmed by Tom Hall before the MachineGames developed entries.
@@fuzzydunlop7928 Tom Hall explained on twitter way back in 2014 that he intended B. 8:15 Mad Max made canned dog food look like the most delicious thing on the planet. The way he dug into it was just so enthusiastically. I'm not the only one who thought this, right?
Tbh canned dog food reminds me a lot of dintymore beef stew in a can which is pretty good for canned food. Never tried eating dog food, but it definitely smells better than cat food. Although I did eat a dog biscuit once. It wasn't the worst thing in the world, but it definitely could have used some salt.
I mean, if you think about it, dogfood is basically a delicacy compared to eating corpse maggots.
You know what the song being played is?
I remember watching my dad play this game when I was a kid. Occasionally he'd let me play, making the name of the easiest difficulty setting simply a description.
Pro Super Noah's Ark 3D
5:53 nah, there's no bad dogs, only bad owners
Y'know, playing this game was strange for me as a kid. I was learning German at the time and I got oddly obsessed with it. Wolf3D is the first game that really got me into modding. I made an entire new game for myself about killing monsters as a sorcerer before I found out that Catacombs 3D was a thing that existed.
*"EUGH... MEIN GOTT IN HIMMEL!"* - Dr. Schabbs
*”MUTTI!”*
Fun fact: In the Atari version Dr. Schabbs yells "Scheißekopf !" (Shit head). But I think my favorite voiceline is still *"EINE KLINE AMERIKANER !"* -Otto von Giftmacher.
@@Muster_Muckee_II Scheißekopf is killing me xD this word doesn't even exist in german on top of that it would be gramatically incorrect
Finally, after all these years, someone took this game seriously. Also 24:32 you amateur! Don't you know a knife makes a sound? ;-)
Ive been playing this game for 25-30 years and I never realized that you eat dead bodies if youre below 10 health
I used to use the same guard-luring tactics in a lot of other games when I was younger. Now that I'm older I'm laughing at how they don't just grenade you and being grateful they didn't.
Reuploaded because youtube didn't like hitler's death apparently.
Wait, what? Fr?
@@12q8 It was because there was an audio issue. Not for anything youtube related
Yeah I was joking here

8:27 Maybe it's just cause I'm hungry/curious but...that wet dogfood looks kinda good.
That episode 4 boss level has a secret pushwall next to the guard with his back turned next to the two keys. If you use that secret you get the two keys without ever waking up that entire room full of guards. The only way I know this is because of the guide book my dad ordered back in the day says so. We still have it too! Helped me a ton when I replayed this when it released on the 360 way back.
"You don't get a better game ending than killing Hi-" *advert break* I hope they had to pay extra for that one.
"Aw this poor bastard brought a rocket launcher to a hitscan fight." 😁 dammit Civvie I like you.
man I gotta highlight the work you do in adding the subtitles, it might get unnoticed but it really shows you care for your audience uwu
He's already got a lotta work with the editing so I'm the one making the captions and subtitles. 😊
@@AliaImmortalis big thank you as someone who's native language isn't english 🙌
@@LouisVarola No problem.
It's pretty ironic how the mutants make the "Saturday night fever" style "staying alive" move just before they kill you.
15:12 Blake Stone has 66 levels, actually. In every episode, one secret level requires a secret red key card, and another is accessed via hidden teleporter.

@@ZuluRomeo Ooops! Thanks Zulu! 👍👍👍
Oh man I can't wait for Return to Castle Wolfenstein, that game was my childhood. And yeah the crypt levels traumatized me, but god dam did it not give me a hard on for fg42's and the venom gun.
Great video. It was an awesome surprise to see some Wolfenstein 3D love. Hope to see more Wolf 3D engine games in the future!
Pro Blake Stone when civvie? I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL. I'm the only one...
No, not alone, i've been asking for it for like 3 years. 😔
