The Art of Overachieving: Fearless Freiburg

Freiburg have reached the Europa League knockout rounds, the German Cup final, and even topped the Bundesliga table at times in recent years. Not bad for what many still consider a small club. How have Freiburg, under the guidance of beloved coach Christian Streich, managed to punch above their weight? And can you still call yourself a small club when you’re playing Juventus in European knock out games?

  • I have followed Freiburg for a long time. It's not my first team in Germany, but I always found it very nice. Their old stadium was beautiful because of its atmosphere, and the conifers in the background, I miss it a lot. Kobiashvilli, Tanko, Cissé, Franz, Griffo... their new stadium has the people away from the goal and inside it has only the charm of its people. His fans aren't very friendly on social media, but that doesn't matter to me. Streich has been my favorite German coach for 10 years, I have grown up practicing journalism admiring his passion, his sincerity and courage. My appreciation from El Salvador, Central America. Although he never reads it, I supposed. Thank you DW colleagues.

  • Freiburg will change the game in Germany. With Doan they have a €100million player and with a good number of European tournament runs they’ll have prize money which will strengthen the cycle of challenging for the league. Can see clubs like Freiburg pushing Bayern into a European Super League. Freiburg really are that good.

    • @@dwkickoff oh yes I’m sure. Doan has the ability to change games in an instant which not many players have. His World Cup performances show a player who knows how to make it to the top even from a limited bench role.
